Actual Fix it Felix Machine Headed to Midwest Gaming Classic!

As a video game fanatic, I really loved the movie Wreck-it-Ralph. While there were some actual arcade games in the movie, the machines at the center of the story were all imaginary. Perhaps the most iconic game in the movie is Fix It Felix Jr., and pretty soon you’ll be able to actually play the game.

What you’re looking at here is a Fix it Felix Jr. machine, made by Rick Uhlenhopp at Arcade Skin. It looks like a spot-on recreation of the machine from the movie, and even plays a PC version of the game (not Disney’s Flash version). As you can see from the video below, the machine started off as an original Nintendo cabinet, and much of the magic is done with custom made vinyl skins:

Here it is playing a version of the game written by SJAAK, but there’s another version by Rick’s buddy BadBoyBills which is going to be installed on the machine before it’s complete.

While you won’t be able to find this machine in an arcade, you’ll be able to see it in person at the Midwest Gaming Classic this weekend. The show runs from tomorrow (3/23) through Sunday (3/24) at the Sheraton Milwaukee Brookfield Hotel in Brookfield, WI. I’ll be there, so I can’t wait to check it out up close and personal.

You can check out more details on the build over on the Hyperspin forums.

Now all we need is working versions of Sugar Rush and Hero’s Duty to go alongside it.

Northerly Island Pavilion Expansion OKed: Phish, Jimmy Buffett Booked As Headliners

The Chicago Plan Commission on Thursday OKed a proposal to expand Northerly Island’s Charter One Pavilion, which will play host to major acts Jimmy Buffett and Phish this summer.

The seasonal music venue — on the former site of Meigs Field — was seeking approval to boost its capacity by more than 20,000 people by shifting the pavilion’s stage to include a new lawn seating area in addition to 600 new pavilion seats, all facing a backdrop of the city’s picturesque skyline.

The Ticketmaster/Live Nation-owned venue’s makeover into something resembling a Ravinia in the city will be “self-sufficient,” according to DNAinfo Chicago, and should be completed by June 1, in time for Buffett’s June 29 gig, Phish’s July 19-21 jam. In addition, the Chicago Tribune reports Dispatch will play the venue on June 1, O.A.R. on June 28 and Ben Folds and Barenaked Ladies will share a double bill on July 9.

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski to step down ‘in the coming weeks’ (update: his departing words)

STUB FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski formally announces his departure

Julius Genachowski will be stepping down when he reaches the end of his term as FCC Chairman, according to a brief message on the FCC’s webpage. We’re expecting to hear more in a live announcement at 10am, but this was no big surprise: four-year terms are the norm for a chairman and it was widely expected that he’d be amongst the officials replaced during Obama’s second stint in office. The Wall Street Journal actually broke the news yesterday, and speculation over Mr. Genachowski’s tenure has lingered ever since an awkward exchange where he refused to commit to his future at this year’s CES.

During his time at the Commission, Genachowski worked to speed up the roll-out of broadband to rural communities, voiced concerns about the current phone unlocking policy and pushed to allocate more spectrum to WiFi use. With senior Republican Robert McDowell also departing the commission in the next few weeks, two places on the FCC’s five-person board will need filling — with names like Tom Wheeler, Karen Kornbluh and Catherine Sandoval being bandied about as replacements.

Update: Genachowski just made his formal announcement and used his minutes on the podium to thank the FCC’s staff for helping to “get big things done” and “improve the lives of all Americans.” He says the US has gone from “laggard to leader” in telecoms, with as many 4G subscribers as the rest of the world combined.

Update 2: The White House has now issued a statement on the matter, saying in part: “Over the last four years, Julius has brought to the Federal Communications Commission a clear focus on spurring innovation, helping our businesses compete in a global economy and helping our country attract the industries and jobs of tomorrow. Because of his leadership, we have expanded high-speed internet access, fueled growth in the mobile sector, and continued to protect the open internet as a platform for entrepreneurship and free speech.

Archos GamePad Now Available In U.S. For $179

We heard about Archos’ Android Jelly Bean-powered GamePad coming to the U.S. in February for $169, but as you could probably tell, it didn’t make its official debut last month. We’re not sure what exactly caused its delay to come to the U.S., but the Archos GamePad has just made itself available in the U.S. starting today.

The Archos GamePad will come with Android 4.1, a 7-inch display capable of a 1024 x 600 resolution, a 1.6GHz dual-core processor, a Mali-400 MP GPU, 8GB of internal flash storage, 1GB of RAM and, of course, physical buttons. The button layout on the Archos GamePad reminds us of the the original PSP as its thumbsticks look to be that same quality. (more…)
