HBO CEO Teases HBO Go-Only Subscription Service

HBO CEO Teases HBO Go Only Subscription Service

It’s undeniable one of the most popular premium cable channels to offer an online streaming video service is HBO with its HBO Go service. HBO Go allows you to not only watch recently aired shows, sometimes, being able to watch them online minutes after they’ve aired, but also catch up on complete seasons of older shows, movies and specials. Unfortunately, the only way to view HBO Go is if you’re an HBO subscriber, but that may soon change.

According to Reuters, chief executive at HBO Richard Plepler recently made some interesting comments regarding the evolution of the company’s HBO Go service at a recent premier for Game of Thrones’ third season. ”Right now we have the right model,” Plepler told Reuters. “Maybe HBO GO, with our broadband partners, could evolve.” This, of course, means the company has heard our cries for a streaming-only option for HBO Go as paying a full subscription to be able to use the service seems a little redundant. Speedtest.net for iOS updates with all-new design

When it comes to all of the interesting apps that do one thing well, Speedtest.net is one of the best out there, and we sometimes use it to test out new LTE markets for hands-on sessions and reviews. The app gives you both your download and upload speeds either over WiFi or a data connection, and it received a big update today for iOS users. It comes with an all-new design, as well as iPhone 5 support, and a few new features.

speedtest

The redesign features a Tron-esque look to it, and it’s completely different from the web version, which it replicated in the past and didn’t look that great, honestly. The newly-designed app features neon buttons and dials, which give it that futuristic look that it pulls off quite well. Plus, there are some new sorting features that users will love.

Users can now sort results by either type, time, download speed, upload speed, or ping. Tapping on a result will also provide more information about that specific test, including where the test was taken, giving users a comprehensive history of their WiFi or data speed results, making sure they’re getting the speeds they’re paying for.

speedtest-ads

Users can now more easily share results with friends, using email, Facebook, Twitter, or iOS Messages. The app is completely free, but it comes with ads. However, Speedtest.net finally has a paid version that’s ad-free, although it’s in the form of an in-app purchase rather than another paid app. Users can pay a one-time fee of $0.99 to remove all the ads.

Google Rumored To Be Making A Smartwatch, Too

Screen Shot 2013-03-22 at 9.20.39 AM

Amidst Apple iWatch rumors and Google Glass sightings, it would appear that Google is actually working on its own smartwatch to be paired alongside connected Android devices. According to the Financial Times, Google’s Android arm will be the team working on the device, as opposed to the X Lab division, which handled Google Glass development.

The wearable computer market is heating up quite rapidly. Alongside Google’s Glass project, a number of smaller OEMs have launched Bluetooth-connected smart watches to work as a companion to the smartphone.

Fossil has a well-crafted MetaWatch, InPulse has the hot-selling Pebble smartwatch, and there are even a handful of quantified self devices that measure your daily activity. There’s the Nike FuelBand, the Jawbone UP, and the Basis to name a few. Add to that an Apple competitor in the iWatch, and a Samsung smartwatch to boot, and it only makes sense that Google has a watch in the works.

Google Glass takes wearable computing a step beyond the basic wrist watch. However, the rate of adoption will almost certainly be lower than that of a watch or a smartphone since the experience is such a huge change in the way we interact with digital content and our world. A smart watch, on the other hand, would feel a lot more like using a really small smartphone, and that familiarity makes the watch a great bridge between smartphones and computational headsets.

Google didn’t comment on the speculation.

However, there’s a patent owned by Google and filed in 2011 for a “smart watch” with a “flip-up display.” It would appear that the patent also provides for a touchscreen experience.

The question isn’t really if Google will build a smart watch. As small OEMs and big competitors around it flood the market with wearable smartwatches, Google will likely need to join the fight. However, it’s unclear what exactly that will look like? Does a flip-up display look like a flip phone?

From the patent filing, the “flip-up display” seems to work like a digital pocket watch, showing two displays when open and a single display on top when closed.

However, just because Google filed this patent, it doesn’t mean that Google’s Android smartwatch will look anything like it.

On the software side, Google has already proven that it can develop for new forms of computing, such as Google Glass. Even some of its already-released apps like Google Now and Field Trip seem like they would fit in swimmingly with a smart watch. Plus, we can’t forget that the acquisition of Motorola has left Google with a rather sizable hardware team.

Horse Racing Game

Are you a gambling person, or one who likes to take your chances? If you have answered in the affirmative, have you ever made your way to the races before? Surely you would revel in the kind of excitement that a horse race entails, and even more so when you have placed your bets, looking through the binoculars to see your favorite steed ramp it up in the final furlong to finish in pole position. Well, instead of spending your weekend afternoons at the races, you might want to do so at home – while getting your horse racing kicks in. You can do so with the $75 Horse Racing Game, of course, while sharing the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, and spirited moments among friends and family.

The handmade Horse Racing Game has been described as “easy to play but difficult to stop”, and I do not doubt this claim, especially when you consider how the aspiring jockey in you cannot think of anything better other than to throw some money down on whom you think is going to rally past the finish line first throughout the week. This time around, you can more or less say that things are in your own hands, where all you need to do is pick your steed, roll the dice, and ensure that your stallion gets the best results with each dice roll.

SpaceX Dragon to depart ISS next week

Earlier this month, SpaceX launched its Dragon resupply ship to the international space station. Early on, the mission encountered some problems with solar power that threaten to leave the cargo ship stranded. However, those problems were fixed and the resupply ship continued on to the ISS.

Crewmembers aboard the ISS were able to grab hold of the supply ship using the space station’s robotic arm and dock the ship without further incident. The SpaceX Dragon resupply ship was expected to be attached to the space station for approximately a month while cargo was unloaded and other items were placed inside the capsule.

NASA has now announced that the Dragon spacecraft is set to depart the ISS and return to Earth on Monday. The space station is also set to receive three new crewmembers early next week. The Dragon module is currently attached to the international space Station Harmony module, where it has been docked the last three weeks.

The Dragon spacecraft will begin its release from the ISS at 5 AM Eastern on Monday. The Dragon capsule is expected to splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Baja California around 1:20 PM Eastern time. The Dragon capsule carried 1268 pounds of supplies to the crew and will return with about 2668 pounds of cargo. Among the cargo, are the results of experiments that tested how life and microgravity would affect the growth of plant seedlings and changes to the human body.

PopCap Games’ Solitaire Blitz Jumps From Facebook To iOS

PopCap Games Solitaire Blitz Jumps From Facebook To iOS

By now, you should know the name PopCap Games as they’ve released some truly addictive game experiences in recent years, such as Peggle and Plants vs. Zombies. Another one of their addictive titles that has yet to make its way across multiple platforms is its Facebook-only game, Solitaire Blitz. That all changes this week as PopCap is announcing the game is now available on iOS.

Yes – this pretty much is a game of solitaire, but it certainly has a PopCap Games twist to it as you’ll be able to play any number card that will hit into the solitaire pile, regardless of the suit of the card. This helps in making the game fast paced, which is entirely the point as you’ll only have a little over a minute to complete your game. (more…)
