Sony Xperia Tablet Z Teardown: Painstakingly Packed Parts

From what we’ve seen of the Xperia Tablet Z, it is a skinny little wonder, if not exactly the best Android tablet out there. Where it is the best though, is size, and its guts are packed nice and tight into that svelte frame. Now, we are getting to see that construction thanks to a teardown by, oddly enough, Sony itself. Sony ruthlessly tears apart an Xperia Tablet Z for your viewing pleasure (video)

It’s not unusual to see products helplessly dismantled by the likes of iFixit and the FCC, but on rare occasions, companies sacrifice their own creations for our twisted enjoyment. This particular teardown is one of those instances, as Sony employed the skills of one “badass engineer” to reduce an Xperia Tablet Z to nothing but parts. There isn’t much to learn from the accompanying gadget snuff movie aside from the cold speed at which said badass accomplishes the task — inside the slate is a bundle of known components held together by a mixture of screws, tape and glue. The clip’s narrator specifies the Tablet Z will be available sometime in May, but check out the video below if you’d like to get thoroughly acquainted beforehand. And don’t worry about the poor unit’s fate. Sony is just as adept at putting things back together.

A Laser Violin Would Have Surely Blown Amadeus’ Mind

Playing a violin requires far more finesse than just dragging a bow across its strings. There are subtle nuances in motion, pressure, and speed required that take years to master. Or, you can wait for Dylan Menzies to perfect his easy-to-play optical O-Bow and just skip all the practice and rehearsals. More »

Archos GamePad now available in the US for $179

The Archos GamePad goes all the way back to early December, when the gaming tablet released in Europe, leaving those in the US still yearning for a gaming-specific tablet with physical tactile buttons. However, after seeing a bit of a delay, the tablet is now finally available in the US for just $179.

Archos showcased their new GamePad gaming tablet at CES last week, and we even got our hands on the new device during the show, but now anyone can get their hands on it. Previously, the company announced that the tablet would be arriving in February at $169, but the tablet was apparently delayed and the price went up $10.

What’s so unique about this piece of machinery is its 14 physical buttons that are split up on the sides, and there’s even dual analog thumbsticks, as well as an exclusive button-mapping tool that allows users to play Android games without relying on on-screen controls. The GamePad comes with a 7-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 1024×600, which isn’t too impressive, but shouldn’t be a big deal if you’re not gung-ho about pixel density.

Under the hood there’s a 1.6GHz dual-core processor accompanied by a quad-core Mali-400 MP4 graphics chip. The tablet also has 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage capacity, but the device comes with a built-in microSD card slot that can be used to add up to 32GB of extra storage space. The tablet is available now on Amazon, but we expect it to hit other online retailers shortly.

HP Envy X2 Review

HP Envy X2 Review

Microsoft created its Windows 8 OS with touchscreen in mind, with a number of traditional PC users most likely groaning at the thought of reaching out to their monitor in order to open up a program. Mobile computers like laptops, ultrabooks and tablets seem to be making the best use of the new OS since their screen is within an easily reachable distance.

HP introduced its Envy X2 last August which is an 11.6” touch-screen slate PC that easily brings the portability of a tablet with the productivity of a light laptop when it’s connected to its keyboard dock. When we originally put our hands all over it, we walked away extremely impressed, but we knew we had to get this thing into our review lab to put it through all of our tests to see just how good it is. HBO CEO is considering offering HBO Go without a cable subscription

HBO Go is a streaming video service from the HBO premium cable network that has been around for a while now. HBO Go allows users who subscribe to HBO via a cable or satellite TV company to stream on-demand programs over the Internet from HBO. The available content includes movies and HBO’s popular original series such as Game of Thrones.

Rumors have swirled for a long time that HBO was considering offering access to its Go service without customers needing a cable subscription. Many fans of HBO have been clamoring for this feature as well. The CEO of HBO, Richard Plepler, recently stated that the premium movie channel was considering teaming with broadband Internet providers to offer HBO Go to customers that don’t have cable TV.

Both standard and premium cable TV networks have considered this over the years, but have been worried about offering their services without a subscription for several reasons. Those reasons include cannibalizing traditional profits from cable TV services by enticing viewers to switch to the Internet. Plepler recently stated that HBO Go could be packaged with a monthly Internet service in partnership with broadband providers to reduce the cost.

Customers would pay $50 a month for broadband Internet and an extra $10 or $15 monthly the package HBO Go with the service. Pepper noted that “we would have to make the math work.” Whether or not HBO Go will be offered as a broadband only service remains to be seen. Increasing pressure from Netflix and other providers of online streaming content will certainly place additional pressure on HBO to make a decision.

Rocker Headphone Splitter

You know how you would love nothing better than to share some good news with your friends, right? Well, obviously watching a movie together works out great, but what happens when it comes to your favorite tune by someone whom you deem to be the best musician alive, ever? Sure, a good speaker would often do that tune justice, but you cannot be carrying a speaker around wherever you go, can you? This is where a good pair of headphones come in handy, but sharing half an earpiece is not the best idea around. I guess the $11.49 Rocker Headphone Splitter would be a whole lot better, as you get to wear your own pair of headphones without losing out on mobility and audio quality.

This is also the ideal audio accessory to use whenever your and your best mate are not rocking out to the latest band, but are playing a game or watching a movie on your tablet or smartphone. Couples would clearly learn to appreciate it, as it works great whenever you want to listen to some shared tunes while you are on a long road trip, on a long haul flight, out camping under the stars, or just cozying up with one another on the couch. Got to love the design, too, and the Rocker Headphone Splitter works with any standard 3.5 audio jack.

Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid test drive (video)

Ford Fusion Energi plug in hybrid test drive video

The Ford Fusion Energi joins the C-MAX Energi and Focus Electric as the company’s third vehicle with a charging connector and access to California’s HOV lanes. While it’s a larger car than the C-MAX Energi, it weighs about the same and features pretty much the same plug-in hybrid powertrain with 195 net horsepower and three EV driving modes. It combines a 2-liter DOHC 16V Duratec (Atkinson cycle) engine and CVT with an AC synchronous motor powered by a 7.6kWh Lithium Ion battery. This pack takes about 2.5 hours to fill up with a 240V charging station and provides a range of 21 miles (100MPGe) at up to 85MPH in all-electric mode. Both autos share the same unfortunate battery protrusion in the trunk area, and while it’s less of an issue in the Fusion sedan than the wagon-like C-MAX, it detracts from the overall package. The Fusion Energi also packs the company’s latest and greatest tech, including MyFord Mobile, SmartGauge with EcoGuide, Eco Cruise and SYNC with MyFord Touch. Sure, that’s pretty exciting, but how does it actually drive? Find out after the break.

Lonely Mountain Cola: If The Hobbits Made Their Own Soda…

If hobbits had their own brand of soda, it would be best to call it Lonely Mountain Cola. For those of you unfamiliar with the story, that’s a reference to the mountain which holds the hobbits’ treasure that was stolen by the greedy and wicken dragon, Smaug.

Lonely Mountain Cola

I don’t know what Hobbit-made soda would taste like, though. All I know is that they’re smaller than your average soda cans and definitely better-looking in more ways than one.

These LOTR concept soda can designs were created by the people behind the Lonely Mountain Cola Co. Facebook page, which was created to “set up as a cross-realm/inter-dimensional/multiverse experience dedicated to supporting the Dwarves of Middle-earth in their quest of getting their home back.”

Track your stolen wheels with BikeSpike

(Credit: Kickstarter)

You’ve got the quality locks, you’ve seen the how-to-lock videos, and you’re very careful about where to leave your bicycle. But is that enough?

Not according to the backers of BikeSpike, a GPS tracking device being promoted on Kickstarter.

If a thief makes off with your ride, the BikeSpike will show its map location on your mobile device or home computer. Police can be given access to the data to help recovery.

BikeSpike has several other functions, too, as seen in the lighthearted promo vid below.

The compact attachment includes an antenna and an accelerometer, so you can use it to track your distance and speed during rides, or have it send automatic alerts if you’re in a crash.
