Mantis Ridable Hexapod Robot: Insecticon

Last year we heard about a group of students planning to build a ridable hexapod. Now we get to see what such a robot could look like, albeit from a different inventor. This is the Mantis, an all-terrain hexapod built by Matt Denton of Micromagic Systems. The 2 ton robot is powered by a 2.2L diesel engine and can be operated using its on-board controls or remotely via Wi-Fi.

The unit we see here is actually the second version of the robot; Matt said he’s been working on Mantis since 2009 using private funding. I hope his benefactor is a superhero.

That touchscreen control panel looks sweet. Matt should make Mantis Mk.III a hexapod hexacopter. Check out the Mantis website and Facebook page for more info on the robot.

You’ve just sat down to a nice home-cooked meal with your family when the phone rings. Could be Grandma, you think. She still actually uses the phone for talking. But no, it’s a robocall shilling for some debt relief scam, the fifth in as many days. More »

Star Trek: Into Darkness Will Have a NASA Ad for Real-Life Starfleet

Star Trek is every thing we hope space travel can be someday. Maybe we could do without all the universe-threatening disasters, but we’re all hoping for a warp drive, or a tricorder, or a replicator. Until then, NASA is carrying the fire, and the 30-second NASA trailer that will play before Star Trek: Into Darkness aims to get you stoked about our current day, real-life Starfleet. More »

Plant Doctor: Never Let Your Plants Die Again

There are some people who are just don’t know how to take care of plants. Or it might be that you’ve got some special plants in your house that need special care. It’s for reasons like that some designers decided to come up with this device, which allows you to detect the health of your plants.

An entry in the LiteOn Design Awards, The Plant Doctor was conceived by Fan Xu and Du Xubing. The device uses integrated sensors and a microcontroller to detect soil moisture, nutrition content, etc. All of this data can be charted on a transparent display so that you can monitor the health of your plants. It’s also supposed to power itself from the electrolytes in the soil. The device will analyze the soil content and process this information.

While there are similar devices on the market already, the Plant Doctor is still just a concept; but I can already see it being used all over the place, especially when horticulturists are trying to grow and care for rare plants. For the rest of us, there’s always this.

Ubiquitous Marriage Equality Symbol’s Evolution

Ubiquitous Symbol Of Marriage Equality's EvolutionUnless you’ve been living under a rock, sworn off using social networks
or have been on an extended vacation, you’ve probably been stumbling
over the marriage equality symbol that’s cyberventilating its way across
Facebook and Twitter. The pink equal sign on red background, with all
it’s various permutations is now considered the de facto logo of
supporters of gay marriage. And as such, according to Chris Gayomali at theweek.com, "it ticks all the requisite checkboxes. . . it’s simple, instantly recognizable, and well, everywhere."

Even Grandma Could Tell This Isn’t How Hacking Works

It’s a common little meta-game for those of us who are technically competent: keep your eye out in the movies for the most egregious technical misrepresentation you can find. And while its one thing to just keep tossing of reference after reference to “the mainframe,” this complication of hacktastic scenes put together by the folks at Hack a Day is particularly cringe-worthy. Glow Threads: Interactive, Customizable Blacklight Shirt Is Perfect For Self-Expression

Customizable fashion has always been appealing to those that like to
deviate from the norm with their clothing choices. For decades,
teenagers have approached fashion customization by cutting their
clothing, so there are stratigically placed tears that have a grunge
fashion appeal. Others have used silk screening for grapnics, or even
parmanent markers so their clothing boasts their favorite quotes. Using
these methods to customize t-shirts may be tried and true, but the whole
process leaves a greater margin for error, and you know what? Fashion
customization should really just be a whole lot more fun than that! This
is where Glow Threads comes in, as they offer the customization that
most of us know and love, but it’s done in a whiole new way.
