‘Harry Potter’ Proposal Features Quidditch Box, Hidden Ring (PHOTOS)

Rachel Allison knew her girlfriend, Jaquie Richards, had been a “Harry Potter” fan since 4th grade. So when Allison decided to pop the question, she turned to Hogwarts for some proposal inspiration.

Allison enlisted the help of artist Tony Albano to create a “Quidditch box,” filled with the bat and four balls necessary to play the mythical game featured in the “Harry Potter” series. She hid an engagement ring inside one of the balls, the “Golden Snitch,” then surprised Richards.

Allison told HuffPost Weddings that although she has never read the “Harry Potter” books, the movies have been a major source of entertainment for her and Richards since they first began dating in 2010. She was inspired to center her proposal around Quidditch because she wanted the phrase “I open at the close,” which is inscribed on the Snitch and signifies endings and new beginnings, to factor into the proposal.

North Dakota Proposes Redirecting Education Funds For Milk Program

A Republican state senator in North Dakota wants to direct funds to provide milk for low-income students, but Democrats say that he may end up hurting the students he is seeking to help.

On Wednesday, state Sen, Tim Flakoll (R-Fargo) proposed an amendment to the new $1.8 billion education funding formula to pay for milk breaks for low-income students. The move comes almost two months after the state House Education Committee voted down Democratic legislation to fund such a program.

Democrats argue that Flakoll’s proposal would take money from the $16.6 million allotted specifically for educational programs for at-risk students, and direct it toward buying milk and juice instead.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 for Verizon swings through the FCC

Samsung Galaxy S 4 for Verizon swings through the FCC

We weren’t kidding about that influx of FCC filings: the Verizon edition of Samsung’s Galaxy S 4, the SCH-i545, has passed through the US regulator’s approval right on cue. The device on display ticks all the checkboxes we’d expect, including LTE on both Verizon’s main 700MHz band and the carrier’s recently acquired AWS frequencies. We also notice HSPA-based 3G, which suggests Big Red’s GS4 won’t be a paperweight when abroad. The filing just leaves AT&T and T-Mobile as the major stragglers in the US; at the current rate, though, they’ll have little trouble getting clearance before they have to fulfill any future orders.

Popeyes President: Employees May Decide To Work Part-Time In Response To Obamacare

Popeyes, a popular fast food chain, expects some of its employees to voluntarily cut their own hours in order to try to sidestep a fee under the Affordable Care Act, but doing so would not let workers avoid that cost.

The health care law, known as Obamacare, will require Americans to obtain health insurance or else pay a penalty (unless they qualify for an exemption). Ralph Bower, Popeyes’ U.S. president, told The Huffington Post on Friday that he expected some workers to choose to work part-time because he thought the mandate to obtain health insurance applied only to full-time workers. In fact, the mandate applies to all Americans, a fact Bower later acknowledged.

“Our fear is that some of our employees that are full-time employees will cut back on their hours so that they won’t be subject to [the mandate],” Bower said in an interview. “My understanding is that if you’re working part-time, then you’re not mandated to buy the insurance. … If you’re not a full-time employee, then you don’t fall under the mandate.”

Justin Amash Backs DOMA Repeal On Twitter

WASHINGTON — Conservative Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) said Friday that he supports repealing the Defense of Marriage Act, though he wouldn’t commit to cosponsor legislation to do that.

In an unexpected Twitter exchange with The Huffington Post, Amash, one of the more savvy members of Congress when it comes to social media, began with a tweet stating that the “real threat” to traditional marriage isn’t lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender couples, but government itself.

Kwame Harris, Former 49ers, Raiders Player, Talks About Being Gay In The NFL (VIDEO)

During his six seasons in the NFL, Kwame Harris remained in the closet because he did not believe being gay was “compatible” with his career. A first-round selection out of Stanford in the 2003 NFL Draft, the 6′ 7″ offensive lineman spent five seasons with the San Francisco 49ers and one with the Oakland Raiders before retiring in 2008.

“I love football. Football provided me with some experiences and some opportunities that I wouldn’t trade for anything else,” Harris told Coy Wire in an exclusive interview with CNN that aired on Friday. “But at the same time, the cost was great in asking me to not speak candidly or be able to be open about myself in this complete manner.”

Harris kept his sexuality private during his career in the NFL but found himself in the spotlight after an alleged altercation with a former boyfriend generated headlines in January.

Gabriel Wilson, 9-Year-Old With Autoimmune Disease, Gets Magical Harry Potter Gift (PHOTOS)

The package may have been delivered by the U.S.P.S. instead of an owl — but for its recipient, it was nothing short of magical.

A 9-year-old boy named Gabe, who suffers from an autoimmune disease on the PANDAS spectrum, received a box full of goodies from Universal Orlando’s Wizarding World Of Harry Potter on Thursday. It was a gift from Redditor TheAdster, who wasn’t aware of the boy’s medical condition, but knew the boy’s mother via the social sharing site.

It all started nine days ago, with a discussion of the novelty shops at Orlando’s Potter-themed park. Gabe’s mother, who goes by pandas_mom , said her family found the stores too small and crowded on a recent trip to Universal — so TheAdster offered to send souvenirs, including the chocolate frogs, Gabe had wanted.

Blackberry Gaming Platform Advantages, In Select Markets

Blackberry Gaming Platform Advantages, In Select MarketsEver since the Blackberry Playbook tablet came out with the QNX-based operating system (OS), Blackberry had a software platform that was genuinely gaming capable. That was clearly not the case of previous Blackberry OSes that were all about “security and enterprise” features — at the expense of app performance. With Blackberry 10, a fresh page has been turned and it is also a new opportunity for developers, under certain conditions… (more…)
