Chinese Gamer Spends Six Years At Internet Cafe

Chinese Gamer Spends Six Years At Internet Cafe

Not Meng

We’ve published a number of stories of gamers around the world who had their lives cut too short after spending way too many hours at local Internet cafes. But you rarely hear similar stories of gamers practically living at an Internet cafe for several years, and that’s exactly what we have in the following story.

Li Meng has reportedly more or less been living at an Internet cafe near Changchun for the past six years as he only leaves his spot to eat and shower. Otherwise, he can be found at the cafe to play games in the evenings until he gets sleepy, and then proceeds to fall asleep during the daylight hours. We imagine the seats at the cafe must be extremely comfortable to be able to sleep in. (more…)

LG Optimus G2 appears in benchmark-dominating leak

If you were thinking about trading in that recently-dominant LG Optimus G or Google Nexus 4 for a brand new monster soon, look no further – the LG Optimus G2 may be on the way quick! If you’ve been working with the LG Optimus G or the basically-the-same-hardware LG Nexus 4, you know good and well that Qualcomm and LG work rather well together under the hood. Now with the benchmarks we’re seeing today, their team up (so good Google had them make the Nexus 4) is back with a second wave!

sg_lgoptimusg0-580x386

As you’ll know well by the looks we’ve had at the LG Optimus G Pro, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor is an absolute beast. It’s the second-highest most powerful processor Qualcomm makes today – so great, both the HTC One and the Samsung GALAXY S 4 have opted to employ it. Then there’s the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, a step up, a quad-core processor intended only for the most dominant devices of this generation, complete with a fabulous Adreno 330 GPU for graphics superiority.

That’s the processor we’re seeing here in the GLBenchmark results found today to be showing the LG D801. This is a device that’ll be hitting up T-Mobile to start with, bringing with it a set of specifications that’ll blow your mind.

• Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
• T-Mobile 4G LTE
• 1080 x 1794 pixel display
• MSM8974 (aka Snapdragon 800)

The benchmark list you see above also shows the “HTC 6435LVW” – note here that this is the HTC DROID DNA, while the LG E975 below it (with the same score) is the LG Optimus G (the original.) Right along with it is the LG Optimus G Pro which gets a similar score because of its massive display – note that the DROID DNA and the LG Optimus G Pro should, by all means, be getting different scores because the G Pro has a more advanced processor – but again, this isn’t an all-encompassing benchmark, it’s only showing Offscreen 1080p processing – no worries!

Have a peek at our archive of bits and pieces surrounding this upcoming LG Optimus G2 as it makes its way to T-Mobile soon – stay tuned!

HTC One Gutted for Posterity, But it Wasn’t an Easy Task

I’m a fan of gadget teardowns if for no other reason than to see exactly what’s on the inside of some of the coolest gadgets out there. Not too long ago I mentioned that iSuppli had performed a teardown of the Samsung Galaxy S4. The caveat there is that the company didn’t actually have a device to work with, so they only guessed what was inside.

On the other hand, iFixit has got their hands on the new HTC One smartphone and did a teardown the old-fashioned way using heat, screwdrivers, spudgers, and copious amounts of gadget lust.

The result of their work is a gutted HTC One smartphone showing us all the glorious insides. The downside is the One isn’t the easiest device to open up. In fact, it took the gadget surgeons over half an hour just to take the back cover off, and while doing it, they damaged the plastic bezel which surrounds the aluminum case.

Once inside, they found the brains of the operation – a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core CPU, running at 1.7 GHz, along with 2GB of DDR2 RAM, 32 GB of Samsung flash memory, Qualcomm power management and 4G modem chips, a Broadcom combo 802.11ac/Bluetooth 4/FM receiver chip, and a variety of other utility chips.

The HTC One’s 1080p 4.7″ LCD may look great, but it’s a pain to replace – as you have to take everything out of the rear case, including the motherboard – before it can be removed.

In the end, iFixit gave the HTC One an abysmal repairability score of just 1 out of 10. If you worry about breaking your smartphone and being able to fix it, you’d be better off buying insurance. Easy repairability just isn’t in the cards with the HTC One.

Lenovo reportedly in talks to buy NEC’s mobile phone business

It seems Lenovo isn’t giving up on it’s pursuit to buy out a mobile phone company. First it was BlackBerry, which may or may not be fizzling, but this time around it’s reported that Lenovo is in talks to acquire NEC’s mobile phone business. It’s said that NEC is looking to change some things around with its mobile unit, and selling it to Lenovo might be an option.

According to Reuters, several sources familiar with the Lenovo/NEC discussion said that NEC is looking to sell off its mobile phone unit, and they’ve been in several talks with Lenovo to make that happen. However, it’s also said that NEC is talking with other Japanese companies to sell their mobile phone business to.

This comes after multiple reports have surfaced claiming that Lenovo is considering acquiring BlackBarry. Lenovo’s CFO Yang Yuanqing even said himself that a BlackBerry acquisition “could possibly make sense.” However, those rumors have somewhat died down lately, and we haven’t heard much about it since.

If the name “NEC” sounds familiar to you, it’s probably because you bought one of their optical drives from Newegg or Tiger Direct for your custom-built PC, but the company also makes mobile phones. However, they haven’t been making many strides in the mobile phone market, which is probably why they’re looking to sell it off to a company who could utilize it better.

SoundHound now scavenging tunes in more tablet-friendly Android version

SoundHound reveals new Android tablet, Rdio friendly update

If you’ve ever had an earworm you just can’t put a name to, the SoundHound music recognition app — that even translates your humming — can be just the sorcery you need. There’s now an Android version with a more tablet-centric design and tighter Google integration that brings “streamlined sharing to Facebook, Twitter and more,” according to the company. It also trumpeted a stronger relationship with digital music service Rdio, which added interactive music mapping to its SoundHounded track-linking abilities, letting you see others across the globe with the same musical tastes and bad memory. You can grab it at Google Play or Amazon’s Appstore for Kindle, but if you’re as tone deaf as some of us, don’t forget the auto-tune.

The Un-Coolest Gadget Is…

For as many cool gadgets there are in the world there are plenty of gadget failures. We all probably invested in Betamax, Laserdisc or some other technology that didn’t take off. Sounded like a great idea at the time, right? The famous UK TV program The Gadget Show recently polled 1000 viewers to determine the biggest gadget disaster of all time. Some were good technology, but were executed poorly and competitors pounced. Some were ridiculous technology that customers never adopted. But they all have one thing in common – they failed.

The winner of this not-so-prestigious title? The Sinclair C5 battery and pedal powered three-wheeler, launched in the mid 80s. Yep, you don’t see many of those on the roads. Nor did you ever as they only sold 20,000 units. Other gadget fails to make the list include Betamax, Sega Game Gear, Pizza Scissors and Rabbit mobile phones. OK, so maybe requiring a sort of receiver box in proximity to the phone wasn’t the greatest idea. But the company went on to become Orange – so they have seen their fair share of success. View the top 10 list of gadget on the Daily Mirror’s site and think about these fails the next time you ante up for new gadgets.

iOS 7 Jailbreak May Already Be In The Works

iOS 7 Jailbreak May Already Be In The Works

We’ve seen a number of iOS 7 concepts over the past week, and even though Apple has yet to discuss anything that could be considered official news regarding its upcoming version of its iOS, that hasn’t stopped the jailbreak community from looking into the future.

Well-known jail breaker Joshua Hill tweeted out a series of messages in regards to a future jailbreak:

Well, so far it looks like the next jailbreak might be created entirely by me. Evad3rs haven’t gone anywhere, I’ve just discovered all the needed exploits on my own over the past few months

With its release of iOS 6.1.3, Apple closed an exploit that made it possible for the jailbreak to function. Considering iOS 7 is expected to be unveiled this summer, we think a jailbreak for iOS 6.1.3 would be a waste of time, especially since that version of iOS already has its own set of problems. On the other hand, how Hill would gain access to an unannounced version of iOS makes us a bit skeptical as to the possibility of it being a jailbreak for iOS 7. Either way, we’ll have to wait to see what exactly Hill discovered whenever he decides to reveal it.
