Don Young Apology: Alaska GOP Congressman Says He ‘Meant No Disrespect’ With ‘Wetbacks’ Slur

WASHINGTON (AP) — Alaskan Rep. Don Young, one of the most senior Republicans in the House, has apologized for using the racial slur “wetbacks” in referring to Hispanic migrant workers.

Young, now in his 21st term in the House, said in an interview with Alaska’s KRBD radio that when he was young, his father “used 50-60 wetbacks to pick tomatoes” on their California farm.

Sneaky Author Tricks

“No. And no again. Not that.” So says Serena Frome, the narrator of Ian McEwan’s 2012 novel, “Sweet Tooth.” What she’s protesting is a story written by her lover, Tom, in which an author at work on her second novel is scrutinized by a worried companion, a talking ape. “Only on the last page,” Serena explains, “did I discover that the story I was reading was actually the one the woman was writing. The ape doesn’t exist, it’s a specter, the creature of her fretful imagination.”

Filipino Crucifixion Reenactment On Good Friday Draws Penitents And Onlookers (PHOTOS)

SAN PEDRO CUTUD, Philippines — Devotees in villages in the northern Philippines took part in a bloody annual ritual to mark Good Friday, a celebration that mixes Roman Catholic devotion and Filipino folk beliefs and sees some reenact the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

The crucified devotees spent several minutes nailed to crosses in Pampanga province while thousands of tourists watched and took photos of the spectacle, which the church discourages. Earlier in the day, hooded male penitents trudged through the province’s villages under the blazing sun while flagellating their bleeding backs with makeshift whips. Others carried wooden crosses to dramatize Christ’s sacrifice.

Stars of the New York International Auto Show

The new Range Rover Sport had its debut in New York.

The New York auto show marks the last of the big, new model unveilings until the fall, and this year features some remarkable unveilings, along with a hefty helping of SUVs. Where many recent auto shows focused on electric cars and efficiency, this show reflects the northeast of the U.S., and buyers’ preference for SUVs and all-wheel-drive cars.

One notable SUV making its first appearance here is the Range Rover Sport, an urbanized version of the new Range Rover that appeared last year. Land Rover notes that the New York area is its biggest market for the Range Rover Sport, so it is no surprise that the company chose this venue for the launch.

What came as more of a surprise was the V-6 engine option, not available on the standard Range Rover. The base Range Rover Sport also comes in at $20,000 less than its big brother.

‘Strip For Me — Jesus’ Billboard Arouses Attention For Alabama Church (VIDEO)

A billboard in Birmingham, Ala., is arousing controversy for both its message and its placement.

It reads “Strip For Me — Jesus” and it is located right above the Palace Gentleman’s Club, where strippers doff their drawers on a daily basis.

But the billboard isn’t advertising the club, nor is he message asking people to pole dance for the King of Kings. The stripping message is a paraphrased quote from Hebrews 12:1 that is part of an ad for a local church called The Rock, according to church Pastor Mike McClure Jr., 29.

Liz Cheney: Republicans, Get Over The 2012 Loss–and Start To Fight Back

“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. The only way they can inherit the freedom we have known is if we fight for it, protect it, defend it and then hand it to them with the well-taught lessons of how they in their lifetime must do the same. And if you and I don’t do this, then you and I may well spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it once was like in America when men were free.”

Satechi BT Touch Speaker

Bluetooth enabled speakers are dime a dozen, and these seem to proliferate just about anywhere and every accessory shop that you go to. Having said that, it would also mean it is more challenging to select the right kind of Bluetooth enabled speakers, considering the vast choice that there is available to the average consumer. This calls for a more discerning eye, and with the Satechi BT Touch Speaker, you know that your ears will be treated to quality sounds without having to break the bank.

The Satechi BT Touch Speaker would come across as a compact and portable Bluetooth speaker which has been touted to be ideal for both office and travel use. It is capable of delivering powerful, dynamic sound, despite its relatively small size, of course. This is yet further proof of not judging a book by its cover, or in this case, the quality of audio by the speaker’s size. This small yet mighty Satechi BT Touch Speaker is said to have the ability to fill a room with crystal clear audio thanks to its 2.5 X 2 watt dual-channel speaker system. The presence of a built-in microphone also enables the speaker to double up as a hands-free calling device which will play nice with just about any smartphone these days, as long as they support Bluetooth connectivity, that is.

Good design principles are not compromised or forgotten either with the Satechi BT Touch Speaker, where it sports a glossy, sleek black look that ought to find a place in any office aesthetic. The speaker itself will boast of modern, blue LED touch buttons which are able to control audio playback, volume and answer calls. Not only that, the extra features that were thrown into the mix include a rechargeable lithium ion battery as well as a built-in 3.5mm jack so that it can handle legacy, non-Bluetooth enabled devices. Right now, the Satechi BT Touch Speaker is going for an introductory price of $49.99 a pop.
