Sony Xperia Tablet Z Seems To Have Been Delayed To May

Sony Xperia Tablet Z Seems To Have Been Delayed To MayThe other day we reported that the Sony Xperia Tablet Z was up for pre-order and is expected to make its way into the hands of customers come April. Unfortunately it seems that Sony might not be able to make that April release date after all. According to the Sony UK website, placing a pre-order for the Xperia Tablet Z no longer shows an April shipping date. Instead it has been changed to May, meaning that customers will probably have to wait a couple of weeks more before they are able to enjoy the device. It seems that this delay has extended beyond Sony’s online shop to third party retailers who are reporting the same thing. We’re not sure if this affects those who placed their pre-order and received the mid-April date, or if this affects all customers who have placed their order. No reason why the change in date, but then again it’s only appears to be a couple of extra weeks and doesn’t seem like too big of a delay, so we guess customers will have no choice but to play the waiting game.

Google’s Nexus 4 Appears To Have Received A Subtle Redesign

Googles Nexus 4 Appears To Have Received A Subtle RedesignThe Google Nexus 4 is Google’s flagship Nexus device from 2012, and while we’re sure many are waiting for 2013’s Nexus 5, presumably with a Full HD display amongst other hardware improvements, it seems that Google and LG might have made some subtle design changes to the Nexus 4 without saying a word. It has been spotted by German site, MobiFlip, and confirmed by some recent customers, that the Nexus 4 did indeed receive a subtle redesign. One of them is the addition of a slight bump on the back of the device (pictured above). The reason behind this is because the old Nexus 4 sat flat on its back, thus muffling the speaker, meaning that calls or notifications might be missed due to the sound being muffled.

The bump on the back helps elevate the device ever so slightly, making sound from the speakers more audible. It is a legitimate design change and we’re guessing a welcome one for new Nexus 4 owners. Another design change would be in the size of the camera lens’ outer ring which has been made smaller. At the moment no one can quite figure out the reason behind the change, so MobiFlip has attributed the change to mere aesthetics. Since we don’t own the newly designed Nexus 4, we can’t tell if this might have affected the performance of the camera. However are any of our readers out there new Nexus 4 owners who can confirm these changes?

Panasonic’s restructuring plan will let it keep making TVs, for now

After rumors swirled that Panasonic was considering putting a stop to production of its well-regarded plasma HDTVs later this year, the company announced it will stay in the business. President Kazuhiro Tsuga revealed a three year growth plan for Panasonic to focus on batteries and entertainment systems for cars, as well as environmentally friendly housing developments. It will also streamline the number of departments by allowing each division to handle its own products from development to release. The beleaguered TV unit will stay, as Tsuga said it will consider walking away only as a last resort. Additionally, Chairman and former CEO Fumio Ohtsubo will retire in June. Some analysts believe Panasonic will still need to lay off workers if it’s to turn things around, but we’ll have to wait and see how Tsuga’s plan comes together.

Apple Reportedly Cutting Back iPad Mini Supply In Anticipation Of iPad Mini 2 Production [Rumor]

Apple Reportedly Cutting Back iPad Mini Supply In Anticipation Of iPad Mini 2 Production [Rumor]It is without doubt that 2013 will be the year that Apple takes the wraps off their next-gen iPad mini, presumably the iPad mini 2, but how sure are we that it’s happening? Well according to the folks at Digitimes, they are reporting that Apple is looking to cut shipments of the first-gen iPad mini by 10-12 million units. While they did not state why Apple might be doing something like that, it has been speculated that it could mean that Apple is looking to ramp down production of the current iPad and make way for its successor, which is an entirely plausible scenario.

However on the flipside, some are speculating that perhaps it could be due to stiff competition from the likes of more affordable 7” offerings that could be causing Apple to cut back on shipments. Devices like the Amazon Kindle Fire HD and Google’s Nexus 7 offer users Android tablets at affordable prices, making Apple’s iPad and iPad mini seem a lot more expensive by comparison. It was suggested prior to the launch of the iPad mini that the reason behind its creation was to compete with the likes of the Kindle Fire and the Nexus 7. In any case the rumors are saying that the iPad mini 2 could be seeing a launch in Q3 of 2013, which makes sense since it would make it about a year from its previous release.

Subaru unveils 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid in New York

Subaru has unveiled its first hybrid vehicle at the 2013 New York International Auto Show. The vehicle is based on Subaru’s popular XV Crosstrek crossover SUV that was introduced in 2013. The new hybrid version will launch in Q4 2013 as a 2014 model.

SubaruVXCrosstrek

The hybrid version will be called the 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid and promises the same benefits as the standard version of the Crosstrek with improved fuel economy. Subaru says that it reengineered the chassis to handle the additional weight of the battery system and improved handling, steering, and ride quality. The hybrid version of the SUV shares the same Subaru full-time all-wheel drive system of the standard version.

The gasoline-powered engine in the hybrid is the 2.0-liter Subaru BOXER engine combined with a 13.4-horsepower electric motor. The electric motor is integrated into the CVT transmission of the vehicle. The battery is a 100-volt 13.5-kilowatt nickel-metal hydride battery located under the revised rear floor area of the vehicle.

The hybrid vehicle also has an automatic start/stop feature and the complete hybrid system weighs 95 kg. The hybrid version of the Crosstrek ways about 136 kg more than the standard gasoline version. Subaru also fits the vehicle with a regenerative braking system to help keep the battery charged longer. Subaru is aiming for fuel efficiency of 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on highway.

Cameras With WiFi Connectivity Could Be Hacked And Turned Into Spy Cams

Cameras With WiFi Connectivity Could Be Hacked And Turned Into Spy CamsOne of the newer features that camera manufacturers have started to introduce to many of their cameras is built-in WiFi. What this means is that it allows photographers to transfer photos from the camera to another device, like a tablet, smartphone or computer, wirelessly, eliminating the need for additional cables. While it sounds like a convenient feature, it has been discovered at the hacker confere, Shmoocon 2013, that this WiFi feature might not be as safe as you think. (more…)

Gameloft Announces Official Iron Man 3 Game For iOS And Android

If you are a fan of the Iron Man series of movies, chances are you probably can’t wait to catch Iron Man 3 upon its release. For those who consider themselves more hardcore fans, the folks at Gameloft have announced the Iron Man 3 game will be making its way onto iOS and Android devices on the 25th of April. From what we can see in the trailer video, it does not look too bad and could even be pretty fun, although I still have a bit of skepticism and see this more as a promotional tool rather than an actual proper game. Then again I could be wrong but in any case, for those interested, the 25th of April is a date you’ll want to mark on your calendars, and in the meantime feel free to check out the trailer in the video above to get an idea of what you might be able to expect.

Ouya video game console ships on June 4

Early on when the Ouya video game console turned up on Kickstarter, it was easy to see the device is nothing more than a way to bring Android game apps to the big screen in your living room. The more we learn about the cheap little Android-powered game console, the more it became clear that playing Android games wasn’t all this little device is about. This console will have access to video games developed by major game developers and also supports other types of content.

OUYA1

Back in February, Ouya announced that it would start shipping consoles on March 28. The shipments were only for the early backers of the project who purchased the console via Kickstarter. If you missed that Kickstarter campaign or only recently decided that you wanted to get your hands on these little consoles, Ouya has announced that general availability will be June 4.

The game console will launch simultaneously in the US, Canada, and the UK. Ouya says that “tens of thousands” of the consoles were sold in the first month when the device was announced in 2012. The console promises HD graphics, immersive sound, a real game controller, and a unique platform for enjoying all sorts of game genres. If you somehow missed this console and all of the previous coverage we’ve published, it’s a slick little device that looks like a small cube and is designed to plug directly into your TV.

The console uses an integrated Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset and supports full HD resolution graphics. All of the games available for the console will be downloadable and free to try. In addition to games, the little console will also support streaming video and music applications. One of the best things about the console is its low price of only $99.99 for the console and controller. An extra controller will also be available for $49.99.

Double the brightness in low light photos with Panasonic’s new color filtering technology

Panasonic has developed a unique technology that doubles the brightness of color photography, by using micro color splitters instead of conventional color filters in the image sensor.
These two photos were taken using CCDs with the same sensitivity. The one on the right was taken with the color filter system used in nearly all digital cameras. The one on the left was taken with Panasonic’s new micro color-splitting system.
Until now, image sensors have produced color pictures by using …
