Apple Hires “Ground Truth” Managers To Help Improve Apple Maps

Apple Hires Ground Truth Managers To Help Improve Apple MapsWe’re sure that many iOS users were bummed what Apple replaced Google Maps on their phones with Apple Maps, especially since there were many reports of inaccuracies over Apple’s Maps software. However when Google Maps was released as a standalone app for iOS, it’s safe to assume that many users quickly replaced Apple Maps with Google’s version, not only due to its familiarity, but with its more accurate track record. However considering that Apple invested a fair bit of money into acquiring the technology needed to create their own mapping services, they are busy working on making sure that it becomes as accurate and reliable as Google’s offering.

One of the ways that Apple is going about doing that is by hiring “Ground Truth” managers which will help improve the quality of Apple Maps in regions around the world, such as Eastern Europe and Japan. So what is “ground truth?” Well if you’re hearing this for the first time, according to its definition, it refers “to a process in which a pixel on a satellite image is compared to what is there in reality (at the present time) in order to verify the contents of the pixel on the image,” essentially helping to improve the accuracy of Apple Maps which happens to be one of the pet peeves many early Maps users were complaining about.

Sprint And Softbank Promise Not To Use Chinese Equipment, Will Replace Huawei Products In Clearwire’s Portfolio

Sprint And Softbank Promise Not To Use Chinese Equipment, Will Replace Huawei Products In Clearwires PortfolioChinese brands such as Huawei and ZTE have managed to get a reputation as being able to produce somewhat decently specced handsets and devices at affordable prices. However at the same time both companies have also managed to gain the reputation of not being trustworthy, at least that what the US congressional committee seems to think with their report from back in 2012. At the same time, The Wall Street Journal has reported that according to their sources, the US congressional committee seems to be worried that after Sprint merges with Japan’s Softbank, they would be relying on equipment manufactured by Chinese companies, such as Huawei or ZTE, to help build its new network.

According to the chairman of the House intelligence committee, Mike Rogers, he claims that he has since received phone calls from both companies with a promise that they will not be using equipment from China, and that current Huawei products in Clearwire’s portfolio will be replaced. We guess this compliance with what the government wants is a way for both Sprint and Softbank to help reduce the number of obstacles they would have to go through in order to have the deal clear. We’re not sure what this could mean for consumers, but considering that there are other companies who manufacture affordable products, we guess at the very worst consumers will just have one less brand to choose from.

Samsung Exynos Octa now rocking LTE, destined for Korean market

Samsung Exynos Octa now rocking LTE, destined to Korean market

When Samsung’s Exynos 5 Octa was announced, it was believed to be compatible with 3G networks only. As such, the HSPA+ (global) version of the Galaxy S 4 was the only handset to feature the company’s eight-core SoC — the LTE model shipping with Qualcomm’s 4G-capable, quad-core Snapdragon 600 instead. That’s apparently changed, with the Korean giant tweeting that the Exynos 5 Octa now supports LTE on 20 bands. So why even make a Snapdragon 600 version of the Galaxy S 4, then? Perhaps Samsung can’t produce as many chips as Qualcomm to meet the upcoming worldwide demand for its new flagship. This appears likely, with inews24 and new-samsunggalaxys4 reporting that the Exynos 5 Octa with LTE is currently reserved for Korean models only (SHV-E300S, SHV-E300K and SHV-E300L, to be exact). So, anyone fancy a trip to Seoul in the near future?

Next-gen iPhone Rumored For 20th June Launch

Next gen iPhone Rumored For 20th June LaunchAccording to the rumor mill, the next-generation iPhone, the purported iPhone 5S, could be seeing a launch in Q3 2013. However according to a new rumor, the iPhone 5S could be launched a little bit earlier instead. This rumor comes from Japanese website, MacFan.jp who claims that the phone could be officially announced at a special event which will be held on a Thursday on the 20th of June. This is probably the most specific announcement date we’ve heard yet, especially since previous rumors could only provide a rough timeframe. The rumor goes on to state that the phone will go up for sale in early July, which is typical of Apple who usually releases their products within a couple of weeks of their announcement.

So what about the Q3 date then? Is that a complete bust? Well maybe not so. As you might have heard, Apple is working on a low-budget iPhone as well and according to MacFan, August (which is in Q3) is when Apple could be taking the wraps off their low-budget iPhone which has been designed for emerging and pre-paid markets. We suggest you take this with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys make of this?

Apple Could Ditch Samsung As iPad Mini Display Supplier

Apple Could Ditch Samsung As iPad Mini Display SupplierApple and Samsung’s relationship is not exactly the best of relationships, no thanks to the flurry of lawsuits that they have thrown against one another in the recent year. In fact, there are whispers going around that the second generation iPad mini tablets that were rumored to feature Retina Display resolution will no longer rely on Samsung to deliver the touch panels, but rather, Cupertino has decided to call upon the assistance of Innolux to help them out.

This outcome is predictable, although it will still cause ripples down the line, considering how both companies are still going up against one another in the court of law. Right now, most of the iPad mini displays are manufactured by Samsung, and this particular contract loss could deal a sizeable blow to the South Korean conglomerate’s bottom line, unless of course, they come up with a best selling tablet of their own to eat into the iPad mini’s sales. Looks like the law of the jungle operates here yet again, and executives at Innolux might want to prepare some bottles of bubbly to celebrate, too.

Windows 8 Tablet Screen Requirements Lowered To 1024×768 Resolution

Windows 8 Tablet Screen Requirements Lowered To 1024x768 ResolutionMicrosoft did set some pretty stringent standards for those who want to churn out tablets that run on the Windows 8 operating system, and among one of those would be a screen resolution count of 1366 x 768 pixels. Of course, the lower the common denominator, the better since costs would be lowered as well, but this was not the case, at least not until a few days ago, where the leaked build of Windows Blue actually depicted that the minimum resolution has been lowered all the way down to 1,024 x 768, which should come across as a sigh of relief for some of the fledgling tablet manufacturers.

This particular change was announced on Microsoft’s Windows Certification Newsletter earlier this March, where Microsoft did state that they were not actually doing so to encourage PC OEMs to deliver a lower resolution for their Windows 8 tablet products, although the possibility is there, thereby admitting, “We understand that partners exploring designs for certain markets could find greater design flexibility helpful.” Assuming a Windows 8 tablet will feature a 1,024 x 786 resolution, the PC OEM maker has the responsibility of stating so to the consumer, and that such tablets are unable to support the snap view for Windows 8 Modern apps. Fair enough, don’t you think so?

Blackberry Q10 Currently Being Tested By 40 Carriers In 20 Countries

Blackberry Q10 Currently Being Tested By 40 Carriers In 20 CountriesThe Blackberry Q10 has yet to be released, but it seems that Blackberry has no plans to slow things down. According to Blackberry’s CEO, Thorsten Heins, during the company’s Q4 FY2013 earnings call, he revealed that the Blackberry Q10 is currently being tested by 40 carriers in 20 countries, suggesting that when the device is released, we can expect Blackberry to cover as much ground as possible. No word on when the Q10 will see a release, but the end of April seems to be the general consensus. We expect that more traditional Blackberry customers might be more interested in the Q10 over the Z10, especially given the familiar QWERTY physical keyboard layout that seems to be a hark back to the good old days of devices like the Bold 9900 and so on. The Q10 will be running on Blackberry 10, and just like the Z10, it will support Android app ports as well, meaning that would-be customers will not have to worry about the shortage of apps.

55% Of Blackberry Z10 Customers Come From Other Platforms, According To CEO

55% Of Blackberry Z10 Customers Come From Other Platforms, According To CEOWe’re pretty sure that many a Blackberry loyalist would have jumped at the opportunity to swap out their older Blackberry device in favor of the new Blackberry Z10. At the same time we expect that there are other users from other platforms who might have liked what they’ve seen and might have jumped shipped as well, but the question is, how many? During Blackberry’s Q4 FY2013 earnings call, Blackberry CEO Thorsten Heins revealed that not only was Blackberry 10 seeing new subscribers from older Blackberry users, but they are also seeing an influx of new users coming from other platforms, a whopping 55% to be exactly.

Heins stated that 55% of those who bought the Z10 came from other mobile platforms, such as iOS, Android or Windows Phone. If the numbers are accurate, this is certainly a pretty amazing feat for Blackberry and goes to show that the Blackberry Z10 certainly does have appeal and that many are willing to check it out. This is in line with comments made by Blackberry’s MD in India who claimed that 45% of Blackberry Z10 customers came from other platforms.

Alleged Canon EOS 7D MK II Test Camera Specs Revealed

Alleged Canon EOS 7D MK II Test Camera Specs RevealedThe Canon EOS 7D MK II is expected to be announced sometime in the future, when exactly remains unknown. However for those looking forward to hearing more about the successor to the EOS 7D, the folks at Northlight have managed to get their hands on what seems like alleged specifications of said camera. Keep in mind that these are alleged specs and might not necessarily be the real thing, so approaching it with a hint of skepticism will probably go a long way preventing yourself from being disappointed.

So what are we looking at here? Well if the specs are right, the EOS 7D MK II will feature a 21MP APS-C sensor, an ISO range from 100-25,000, 10fps shooting, Full HD video capture with manual control, a single CF card slot, 19 AF points, phase detection for liveview and AF tracking, a 100% viewfinder, a 3.2” LCD display, GPS and WiFi connectivity and an alloy body with better weather sealing compared to the EOS 7D. These are somewhat believable specs but like we said, we cannot confirm them at the moment. However for those looking forward to the EOS 7D MK II, what do you guys think?
