Guitar maker Gibson buys majority stake in TEAC, develops taste for electronica

US guitarmaker Gibson gets into the electronics business, buys majority stake in TEAC

That gruff American rocker, Gibson Guitar Corp., has gotten tired of its old life. Instead of just suing copycats and putting out the occasional robot axe, it’s now looking to diversify, having spent $52 million on a 54 percent stake in Japanese firm TEAC. The last we heard from TEAC, it was making things like headphones and retro-styled radios, which maybe gives us a hint as to where this new partnership is headed. After all, it’s not like the path between music brand and consumer electronics hasn’t been trodden to a pulp already.

Dragon Eternity cross-platform MMO hits the iPad

There are hordes of gamers all around the world who enjoy a good MMO video game. Typically MMOs can only be played with gamers on the same platform. That means if you buy the game for your PC, you can only play against other PC gamers, while if you buy it for a console, you can only play against other console gamers.

There are some cross-platform MMO games when it comes to the mobile world to allow different devices to play the game together. A company called Game Insight has announced a new cross-platform MMO called Dragon Eternity. The game has come first to the iPad and is available for PC gamers using a web browser version of the game. That web browser version of the game is currently in open beta and has over million users globally.

The game developers promise to deliver an Android version of the game in the near future. The developers of the game promise unprecedented depth and a huge variety of content to form a deep MMO experience allowing players to choose sides in the game world. Players can play as Vaalor or Sadar factions and as one of three different character types.

The character types include Paladin, Berserk, and the Witcher. The game play has players completing quests and collecting various weapons and sets of armor. The goal is to eventually earn the trust of the Dragon that will follow the player and fight with them. The game also supports nine different harvesting and crafting professions and has an in-game auction system. Players can also take advantage of five different varieties of combat including head-to-head and player versus player combat styles. One of the interesting things about the game is that a player can start a new adventure on the iPad and then pick that adventure up from where they left off on a web browser.

US Navy to fund development of vehicle-mounted, drone-shooting lasers

US Navy to fund development of vehicle-mounted, drone-shooting lasers

Lasers, particularly those that set boats ablaze and incinerate incoming missiles, have long been on the Navy’s mind. Today, the Office of Naval Research revealed its latest energy weapon craving: vehicle-mounted lasers that shoot down drones. Dubbed Ground-Based Air Defense Directed Energy On-The-Move, the project is offering private outfits up to $400,000 each to develop such a system that blasts at full power for 120 seconds and juices back up to 80 percent after a 20 minute charge. The beam is required to pack a punch of at least 25 kilowatts, while the ability to ratchet up to 50 kilowatts is optional. Given that kind of power, Wired points out that making such a solution fit in a Humvee is going to be a feat — especially when the Navy says it can’t weigh more than 2,000 pounds and must fit entirely within a vehicle’s cargo area. Have blueprints for a jeep-mountable laser squirreled away in your basement hobby shop? You’ll have to send your application in by 2 PM on April 26th to qualify for the federal cash.

Slingbox 500 firmware update adds SlingSync support for remote photo viewing and USB drive uploads

Slingbox 500 firmware update adds SlingSync support for remote photo viewing and USB drive uploads

Your Slingbox isn’t just for streaming realtime television content anymore. SlingSync, which we first heard about during CES, is now available as part of this week’s firmware update, letting you upload photos and videos captured with an Android or iOS device directly to a USB drive connected to a Slingbox 500. Using SlingPlayer Mobile on your handset or tablet, you can opt for either automatic or manual transfers, enabling you to offload captured content for safekeeping. And, assuming the Slingbox 500 is connected to your television, you can then view photos and videos on your TV. Your device will need firmware number 1.3.462 in order to take advantage of SlingSync, while mobile gadgets should be using SlingPlayer Mobile version 2.4.2 for Android or 3.4.1 on iOS. Though the above feature only applies to the 500, the update also marks the return of Audio-Only mode on the Solo, Pro-HD and 500 — the Slingbox 350 will receive that last feature in a future update.

Transcend announces 64GB microSDXC Ultra High-Speed storage card

Ever-increasing storage demands prompt increasingly higher capacity storage cards, including the newest release from Transcend, a 64GB microSDXC UHS-I. This ultra-high speed memory card offers very fast transfer speeds in the tiny microSD shell, bringing high storage capacity to your small mobile devices. This is part of the maker’s UHS-I line, which ranges from 8GB to 64GB.

The Transcend 64GB microSDXC Ultra-High Speed Class 1 memory card offers high transfer rates that go up to 45MB per second, giving users very high performance for demanding tasks. The memory card is being marketed towards smartphone and tablet owners, but is also applicable to other devices with support for microSDXC cards with this high of a capacity.

This card is boasted as offering data transfer speeds that 300 times faster than its non-Ultra High Speed equivalents, making it a good choice for those who watch, process, or record high-definition video, such as those utilizing the 1080p camera on their smartphone. It is also a good option for use with apps that are memory-intensive.

To help put the 64GB in perspective, this tiny microSD can hold approximately 10,000 high-res JPEG photographs taken at 12-megapixels with an average size of 6MB each. Or, for those who spend more time recording video than they do taking pictures, this newest Transcend card can hold 16 hours of video recorded at full 9Mbps 1920 x 1080 H.264 video. The card is available now for $109.

12 new games for Windows Store announced at 2013 Game Developer Conference

The 2013 Game Developer Conference has been underway this week, and during it a variety of games have been shown off, a dozen of which are heading for the Windows Store. Some of the games are free, and others have a moderate price tag, but regardless, a few are popular titles Windows Phone owners will be happy to see.

Samurai-vs.-Zombies-Defense_thumb2_thumb_1C9AF5CF

The only game announced that has a price tag associated with it so far is BeJeweled from PopCap, which is priced at $4.99, and is the addictive game that many mobile gamers are already familiar with. There are several titles that haven’t had their prices announced yet, so whether they turn out to be free like a few announced is yet to be seen.

Among the free games is the cute Samurai vs. Zombies from Glu, which is pretty self-explanatory. You play as a samurai, recruit warriors and farmers and such, and you battle against zombies. There’s also Emily’s True Love from GameHouse and ShuffleParty from Microsoft Game Studios, which is a 3D shuffleboard bowling game that is said to be a hit.

And finally, currently filed away under “Coming Soon” in terms of pricing information is The Harvest, a sci-fi RPG, as well as Doritos Crash Course: Go!, which, as you might have guessed, will leave you with a strange hankering for cheesy corn chip snacks. Then there’s Endless Skater, a skateboarding game, and Field & Stream’s Fishing game, where you can relax and reel in some virtual fish. Speaking of fishing, there’s also Fishdom 3, which is a virtual fish tank, and last but not least is Ty the Tasmanian Tiger.
