Ouya Console Arrives This June 4th

Ouya Console Arrives This June 4thIt looks like the Ouya console has come full circle, after managing to capture the attention of the world with its Kickstarter campaign which remarkably managed to collect more than $8 million in funding last June, which means a year after that, the startup will keep to their promise and fulfill the pledge of rolling out the Ouya game console to retailers this coming June 4th. The Ouya console is definitely one of the more affordable consoles out there, with a $99 price tag stuck to it, and the role of the Ouya console is to disrupt the TV gaming market in a similar manner that the iPhone changed the world of portable and casual games.

With Ouya, it is hoped that developers with an interest and strength in programming are able to deliver inexpensive yet fun games. Powered by the Android platform, the other of Ouya’s main objective would be to ensure that costs remain rock bottom, as part of the effort to encourage innovation in a way that the traditional game development model cannot. Just one thing – do not expect it to deliver the level of immersion and graphics like those found on current generation consoles, of course, and most probably you will have to settle for pretty 2D imagery instead.

Facebook Invites Folks To Check Out Its New Home On Android This April 4th

Facebook Invites Folks To Check Out Its New Home On Android This April 4thLove it or hate it, Facebook is definitely here to stay, and it is a force that ought to be reckoned with. The world’s most popular social network has managed to fend off all other competitors such as Friendster and MySpace, and is set to also enter the world of online ads in an effort to boost its revenue. Well, recent times have seen Facebook make attempts to go around the Google Play Store on the sly when it comes to updating Facebook for Android, while Facebook for iOS has seen voice calling roll out to additional users, albeit slowly but surely. It seems that Android users of Facebook are being left behind in the technological arms race, which is why Facebook attempts to address the issue by sending out invitations for an April 4th event, where they hope to show off its “new home on Android” to the masses.

Just what does this mean? Some folks are wondering whether this could translate to a new Facebook smartphone, while others would dump the hardware route and prefer to concentrate more on the potential Facebook on Android will have on users. What do you think this April 4th event will bring to the table?

The Axis of Awesome: Rage of Thrones

The entire world—my geek friends, my non geek friends, my non TV watching non geek friends—is waiting for March 31st because that’s when Game of Thrones is finally coming back to HBO. Westeros! Dany! Jon Snow! Tyrion! Robb Stark! Robb Stark’s girl who is the great granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin! Everyone is excited except… the people who read the books. They know what’s coming. The Axis of Awesome made a hilarious music video called ‘Rage of Thrones’ about those people and how they feel about us bandwagoners. Still, though. Game of Thrones on HBO is great! The First Honest Cable Company Commercial

Cable companies are universally regarded as only slightly more popular than evil dictators, and a little less fashionable than certain strains of STDs. How do you fix something like that? Honesty! We’re awful; we’re unstoppable; you’ll hate us; deal with it. That’s something you could respect (and which would be applicable basically everywhere in the world but east Asia). Hell, I’d probably switch to this company if it were real. [YouTube] More »

Honda Odyssey Minivan Has Integrated Vacuum

If you are a soccer mom or want a ride that is more practical for the entire family instead of relying on a nice sports car to get around, then there is nothing quite like a MPV or a minivan as your family’s primary people mover. After all, it is spacious to carry a load of kids as well as your parents-in-law, in addition to having more than ample storage space – useful when you have tons of stuff to lug around on your road trips with the rest of the family. Well, the 2014 Honda Odyssey Minivan has something that all spic and span folks would love – a built-in vacuum to help clean up whatever mess the kids (and pets) leave behind, be it fur, bread crumbs, and other rubbish.

Known as the HondaVAC, it is touted to be the world’s first in-car vacuum, and was developed in conjunction with Shop-Vac. Basically, it is a vacuum hose that is located right behind a side panel in the rear cargo area. The hose itself is long enough to reach all the way to the front driver’s seat, which means it is highly practical and flexible. As long as your ride’s battery has juice, the HondaVAC will suck up all the mess in sight, and it can be used for up to 8 minutes on reserve power when parked.

O-Bow Laser Violin

O Bow Laser ViolinIt is taken for granted that generally speaking, Stradivarius violins are among the most sought after in the world, but what really matters is, just which hands is the violin in question being played with? Give a Stradivarius violin to a beginner and you will most probably be better hearing off a cat screeching orchestra, but when a maestro picks it up, now that is art in motion. Here is a rather unconventional take at what a violin could be in the future, thanks to technology lecturer Dylan Menzies who decided to fall back on the clever amalgamation of using software as well as lasers which will translate the positioning, speed and motion of a traditional wooden bow, all into music. In other words, Dylan introduces the O-Bow Laser Violin to the world.

The optical sensor-driven O-Bow will come encased in copper, complete with a groove for the bow, and this system of his will fall back on synthesis software in order to translate data which has been sent from an optical flow sensor, and that will help track the speed, motion and angle of a wooden rod in high resolution as though it is moving across it. Right now, the 5th prototype of the O-Bow has been completed, and it remains to be seen whether something like this will ever hit the market commercially.

Google takes Open Patent Non-Assertion Pledge

Google has made a statement on open source and patents, publicly making an Open Patent Non-Assertion Pledge and promising not to go after open source software on the basis of patents. This follows Microsoft’s launch of its Patent Tracker tool earlier today, which is a step towards patent transparency, something that has a solid place in the OPN pledge Google has taken.

Little House

Says Google: “We pledge not to sue any user, distributor or developer of open-source software on specified patents, unless first attacked.” It has kicked the pledge off with 10 patents related to MapReduce, a technology for large data processing with open source variants in common use.

Over time, the search engine giant plans to extend the pledge to additional patents, but regardless says that the OPN (or a similar alternative) is something it encourages other companies to take as well. By doing so, the companies will be promoting a few advantages and helping to reduce the number of patent-related lawsuits.

The advantages of taking such a pledge, says Google, include transparency, making it easier for developers and such to assertain patent rights. Breadth is another listed advantage, eliminating the limitations a specific open source license/project would present. The OPN pledge is also said to be a form of defensive protection, with Google only using it for defensive purposes. And finally, durability, with the pledge being in place for as long as the patent exists.
