AT&T Nokia Lumia 920 Gets New Firmware Update

AT&T Nokia Lumia 920 Gets New Firmware UpdateIt was just yesterday that folks who are rocking to the Nokia Lumia 920 flagship device from the Finnish smartphone company on AT&T were on the receiving end of a totally new firmware update, and it does seem as though this particular firmware update would form the basis of future updates for other Lumia devices, which carries with it its fair share of changes, especially for the display time-out that can be found under Settings > Lock Screen.

Right now, select users on a few Windows Phone devices can choose from the following quartet – 30 seconds, 1 minute, 3 minutes and 5 minutes. This particular choice would determine just how long your device will remain idle before the smartphone’s display powers off, and with the 1308 firmware from AT&T, there are new timing options, including 15 minutes, 30 minutes and the grand daddy of them all – Never. Not too sure who would choose Never, but you can’t quite tell from what the masses think, can you? I suppose that would come handy if you happen to love watching movies on your smartphone all the time.

Hack a Can of Compressed Air So It’s Refillable

It’s useful for blasting dust, crumbs, and other crap off your keyboard and electronics, but those overpriced compressed air cans are almost as big a rip-off as printer ink. So here’s a brilliant and relatively simple hack that makes a compressed air can refillable with a standard tire pump. And just to highlight what’s probably the most crucial step in this project: you’ll want to make sure the can you’re using is completely and thoroughly empty before going at it with a drill, be aware of the can’s recommended PSI before filling it, and just be careful when attempting this. DIY theremin goggles marry the art of noise with steampunk style (video)

DIY theremin goggles marries the art of noise with steampunk style

Sometimes annoying just isn’t annoying enough. For DIY enthusiast and self-described “maker of awesome” Sarah Petkus, the incentive to irk was merely a happy by-product of her latest goggle design. The steampunk-ish effort, chronicled on Petkus’ blog Robotic Arts, combines some artfully arranged scrap metals with an integrated optical theremin that lets the wearer manipulate an incredibly unpleasant tone just by waving their hands and adjusting the amount of light fed into the sensors. Since the volume control and speaker are housed inside the eyepieces, the goggles are little more than a head-mounted accessory. But that shouldn’t stop cosplay types (or sociopaths) from strapping on a set and tweaking the nerves of unfortunate passers-by. That’s if Petkus gets around to selling the “eyewear.” For the public’s sake, we hope this inventive mod remains a one-off. Head past the break for a video demo of this cringe-inducing, gesture-controlled cacaphony.

Samsung To Release 8-Inch Tablet With Full HD Resolution?

Samsung To Release 8 Inch Tablet With Full HD Resolution? We all jolly well know that Samsung has plans for an 8” tablet, which will obviously be known as the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, but that particular tablet, despite its rather decent display size that could cram in a Full HD resolution, will just feature the now classic 1280 x 800 resolution, which would not be able to keep up with the rumored (and upcoming) iPad mini that has been outfitted with a Retina Display, churning out 2048 x 1536 pixels resolution. Apparently, not all the rabbits in Samsung’s hat have been pulled out, as there are whispers of Samsung working on a Full HD 8” tablet that will feature an AMOLED display armed with 1920 x 1200 pixels resolution.

This should be a tablet that will officially debut later this year at IFA 2013 in Berlin, Germany, and if it materializes as expected, it would be the second Samsung tablet that features an AMOLED display, with the honor of the first of such tablets going to the Galaxy Tab 7.7. Other than that, no additional details concerning this upcoming 8” tablet has been shared, other than the fact that it should come with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean (or perhaps even Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie) as the operating system of choice alongside a quad-core processor.

Apple Product Launch Frenzy Parodied In Somersby Cider Commercial

Apple’s recent commercials have been, in our opinion, a bit lackluster as they no longer talk about their products. Instead, they focus on the experiences its users can expect from their iOS products. Apple really should use the excitement and long-lines that are synonymous with the launch of a new Apple product, especially their mobile devices.

Somersby Cider decided to launch a new commercial that parodies the experience Apple fans go through when a new product launches. Except, of course, the product that’s featured in the following commercial is a cider. The commercial uses a lot of tech terminology that you would find Apple employees describing their products, such as a “16-pit” apple, or buying a cider that’s “completely wireless.”

The Somersby Cider commercial really does a great job at parodying the frenzy that goes on when a new Apple product is launched. It captures the excitement both Apple’s customers as well as their employees experience that day, but again, this is over cider, which makes its excitement completely ironic.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Pre-Orders On AT&T Goes For $249

Samsung Galaxy S4 Pre Orders On AT&T Goes For $249So, you have already made up your mind to upgrade your Samsung Galaxy S3 to the Samsung Galaxy S4? Well, good news then if you happen to be an AT&T subscriber, as this mobile carrier has decided to make available the Samsung Galaxy S4 on a pre-order basis, starting from April 16th onwards, at $249 a pop. Of course, a pre-order being a pre-order, this means that there is no certainty that the device will ship, whereas the likes of T-Mobile have seemingly jumped the gun by boldly announcing that they will be shipping the Samsung Galaxy S4 from May 1st onwards. If T-Mobile is sure about that as the sun rises from the east, then we would take our chances and warrant a guess that AT&T’s Samsung Galaxy S4, too, will be released somewhere in the same time frame.

For $249, you will get the Samsung Galaxy S4 on a 2-year contract, which will be a $50 premium over the iPhone 5, BlackBerry Z10 and Galaxy S3 that it offers, although that would be $50 cheaper compared to the Galaxy Note 2.

Verizon Gets BlackBerry Z10 At Last

Verizon Gets BlackBerry Z10 At LastSo, you have been waiting for quite some time to pick up the all new BlackBerry Z10 from Verizon Wireless, but have not heard a beep for the past couple of months. Well, we are glad to say that all of your waiting will not be in vain, and if you are interested in picking one of these bad boys up, you can do so from Verizon for $199.99 a pop, although that will obviously be accompanied by the regular 2 year contract. The BlackBerry Z10 will be an all-touch smartphone, where you will be able to choose from black and white colors.

Do take note that the smartphone itself had not been made available Stateside until fairly recently (March 22nd, to be exact), we will have to wait and see just how well the BlackBerry Z10 has performed when the next quarterly report is released. The BlackBerry Z10 on Verizon would mean that they have now joined the ranks of AT&T and T-Mobile when it comes to mobile carriers that offer this device, as Sprint has already mentioned that they will be giving the BlackBerry Z10 a pass his time around.

Razer Edge gaming tablet: What the heck is it?

If you’ve not heard of it before, the Razer Edge gaming tablet can seem like a bit of an odd unicorn. While we’ve heard of gaming tablets before, this really does appear to be one of the most grand efforts a company has made thus far – especially considering the rise of the Android tablet and the iPad – both of which could be considered “gaming tablets” in their own right. What have we got here then? We’ve got Windows 8, a 3rd-gen Intel Core i7 processor, 256GB SSD, and a fabulous 8GB of RAM – and NVIDIA graphics, too!

20130108_135544-580x326

Of course with NVIDIA GT 640M LE (1GB DDR3, Optimus Technology) you’ve not exactly got the biggest, baddest beast in the land, but you’re still running with a brand that boasts its greatness on a daily basis. The tablet itself is 278.5 mm x 178.85 mm x 19.5 mm / 10.9″ x 7″ x .80″ – not exactly tiny. All that comes in the PRO version – there’s also a basic edition which you can find out more about in our fabulous original rundown.

“This isn’t the kind of device you’re going to be bringing to highschool to play during class.”

Since we saw this device back at CES 2013 for our most recent hands-on adventure, the tablet itself has been modified just a bit – but for the most part, it’s still the same device we described then as “a rather interesting combination of ‘why would I want this’ and ‘take my money right this minute’”. You’ll almost certainly be saying one of the two when you see the price: $1,450 USD brand new for the PRO – go grab one!

If you need a bit more convincing, hear this: this is just about as close to NVIDIA’s Project SHIELD that you’re going to get until later this year. With a 10.1-inch 1366×768 IPS display up front and Windows under the hood, it’s also the only experience you’re going to get like this on the market today. Unless you create your own handlebars and control connections for your own Windows 8 tablet, that is.

20130108_135433

There’s also a keyboard dock, mind you. We’re expecting that this tablet will have no end to its accessory add-ons throughout its life. Expect the oddities to roll in!

Why would you want it?

Because playing games on a 10.1-inch tablet is cool, but playing games on a 10.1-inch tablet with a massive set of physical controls attached is even cooler. This device isn’t for everyone, but if you’re the sort of person that’s looking for a gaming experience that’s not exactly like one you’ve ever had before, this is a good place to start!

Have a peek at our hands-on with the Razer Edge and get pumped up about our future coverage as well – this is a rather unique experience, we assure you – don’t miss it!

Samsung Galaxy S4 Wireless Charging Back Cover & Dock Images Leaked

Samsung Galaxy S4 Wireless Charging Back Cover & Dock Images LeakedWhile the Samsung Galaxy S4 will not arrive out of the box with wireless charging capability, those who want to take advantage of what could very well be the future of smartphones and other mobile devices can do so by changing the back plate of said handset, and throwing in wireless charging capability so that it will be able to play nice with a wireless charging pad in a jiffy. What you see above are actually leaked images of the charging back cover as well as wireless charging dock, although to date no exact price or rollout timetable has been confirmed.

The images shown arrive fresh out of China, and of course, the charging pad itself will need to be hooked up to a power outlet directly, otherwise how else is it suppose to draw its juice from? While the Samsung Galaxy S4 sports a whopping 2600mAh of power right out of the box, making it one of the largest capacity smartphones at the moment, this does not mean it should be excluded from the wonders of wireless charging, right?
