Apple patents wrap-around AMOLED display

This week Apple’s industrial designers and inventors have found their way back into the USPTO with a patent filing for a wrap-around display. This means that you’ll have a device that’s got a display that’s wrapping around its sides rather than just sitting on the front – AMOLED in technology, too. You’ll have brightness and light coming at you from all directions!

What you’re actually looking at here is more of a concept for a future set of possibilities. Patents such as this don’t always have to make it to the market with a fully operational product – you probably wont see an oval-shaped iPhone in the near future. But what we can be excited about is the fact that we’re well on our way to this sort of technology making its way to the public in products that are slightly less wacky – as just part of the full show.

There’s a set of examples that Apple gives with diagrams showing angles at which this transforming display might be implemented. If you’ve got a couple of caps on each end, any number of candybar-shaped modules might be created. As Engadget notes, one of these describes how the caps of each one of these cellphone-like devices could be connected to one another, creating a long snake of devices – or perhaps one massive display.

As for the rest of the mobile universe, we’ve already seen some flexible AMOLED concepts out there in the wild. Samsung in particular has been bringing some odd heat here and there – still not inside a market-ready device, but getting closer every day!

Who do you think will reach the market first, folks? And better yet: do you think there’s really a need for a product with a bendy screen in our modern age?

Ceramic Device Housing From Apple Could Feature In Budget iPhone

Ceramic Device Housing From Apple Could Feature In Budget iPhoneApple does seem as though they have not given up on ceramic device enclosures, where this time around, they are checking out a unibody kind of design that has been fabricated from layers of the substrate, using a technique which is akin to those used when laying up fiberglass, and there is at least one analyst who believes that it will feature in a rumored low-cost iPhone. Apple’s patent filing was meant for a “Multi-layered ceramic enclosure” that shares the same kind of property that Cupertino applied for in 2006.

The analyst in question is Ming-Chi Kuo, and the very same analyst also reported earlier in March that Apple will roll out a low-cost iPhone that will feature a shell that is made out of fiberglass which is fabricated using techniques that were outlined as found in the most recent patent application. The new filing certainly does not beat around the bush, where the housing is said to be built from laminated ceramics, and will be used for a “handheld computing device” – anyone willing to guess that it is the budget iPhone?

ASCO Introduces CancerLinQ To Help Find The Cure For Cancer

ASCO Introduces CancerLinQ To Help Find The Cure For Cancer

Researchers and medical professionals have been attempting to find the cure for cancer for countless years, with their efforts resulting in an increased survival rate in recent years, but no real cure for the terrible disease is currently available. The American Society of Clinical Oncologists are announcing a new system that may help drastically speed up the process of finding a cure.

ASCO has completed a prototype called CancerLinQ, which is a learning health system that can collect and analyze cancer care data from millions of patients’ charts from around the country. Doctors currently only have access to three percent of the clinical trial data of the 1.6 million patients diagnosed with cancer every year. ASCO’s hope is for its CancerLinQ system to help doctors learn about treatments used on the majority of people diagnosed with cancer as previously patients’ records were “locked way in unconnected servers and paper files.” (more…)

Robot Headed For Competition Hijacked In FedEx Truck

Robot Headed For Competition Hijacked In FedEx TruckNow this is a story that you do not hear every single day, where the robotics team from Mexico suffered a heartbreak, especially after their robot was stolen en route to the destination in a FedEx shipping truck. This particular incident nearly caused the team to cancel their trip to San Antonio, until a Good Samaritan group from Brandeis High School heard of their plight and decided to do something to help, once again proving that there is still some good left in this world.

Michael Blake, the head of the robotics team at Brandeis, said, “Their crate, which contained their robot, equipment and tools, was on a FedEx truck that was hijacked before it made it from Mexico over to the states.”

The Bronc Botz from Brandeis High School are now working alongside the Mexican team, and all should be in order in time for this weekend’s Alamo-First Regional Competition. Blake added further, “It’s been mostly facilitating them. They know what to do. They’ve built a robot. They’re a rookie team and we’re helping them basically providing materials and back up.” While the stolen robot took half a dozen weeks to construct, the team has just 2 days to build a new one, so all the best to them!

Google Tests Same-Day Delivery Service In San Francisco

Google Tests Same Day Delivery Service In San Francisco

It looks as though Walmart isn’t the only company that is making some moves with its online shopping delivery service as Google has announced it is starting to test its “Shopping Express” service in the San Francisco Bay Area. The company is partnering with big-name retailers like Target, Walgreens, Staples, American Eagle and Toys ‘R’ Us, as well as local coffee shops and independent stores and will offer early adopters six months of free, unlimited same-day delivery with prices of goods reflecting how much they cost in their respective stores.

Google will be looking to price its same-day deliver service competitively against Amazon at around $69 a year, but the company is still currently working on its pricing plan for the service that may change based on data from its early testers and retailers. The process to order same-day delivery goods is said to be as easy as buying your goods, selecting a delivery time slot and waiting for one of Google’s delivery partners to drop it off. Let’s just hope they’re able to deliver your box of popcorn and Diet Mountain Dew in time for movie night, or you can expect to be entertaining some hungry and un-caffeinated guests.

AT&T Samsung GALAXY S 4 pre-orders begin April 16, priced at $250

Hot on the heels of UK pre-orders going live today for the GALAXY S 4, AT&T has announced that they will be opening up pre-orders for the new device on April 16. Those interested will be able to reserve a unit at $250 a pop after signing a new two-year contract. However, AT&T didn’t mention a release date for the device.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

AT&T’s pre-order date is far later than the UK’s pre-order availability. Users across the pond are already able to snag their own unit for when it officially launches on April 26. However, US residents will have to wait a bit longer until they can reserve theirs — at least on AT&T for the time being. We should hear from other US carriers sooner or later.

T-Mobile recently announced the availability of the GALAXY S 4, and CEO John Legere said that the new phone would be available to own “about May 1,” which isn’t a solid release date, but we should expect it to arrive close to that time frame, and other US carriers will most likely follow that same release window.

The GALAXY S 4 comes with a 5-inch 1080p display and a 13MP camera on the back. The US version of the phone will pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor clocked at 1.9GHz with 2GB of RAM. The phone also has a gargantuan 2500 mAh battery. We’ve already gotten our hands on the new toy, but we’ll have a full review coming up in the near future.
