The test begins: My life with four activity trackers, fitness bands

In the space of two weeks, I’ve gone from not tracking my steps, calories, or activities to using four different devices that do so. I’m all in! Over the coming weeks, I’m going to be sharing more about how each device works in real life.

It’s been a fascinating journey so far, and I’m anxious to get into the write-ups. I’ll detail what it’s like with each unit, then do an overall comparison at the end. But before I start on that, I feel that an introductory piece is in order.

One person, four trackers. On the wrist, the Jawbone Up and Nike FuelBand. On the upper arm, the BodyMedia Fit, with a Fitbit One clipped next to it. The BodyMedia is shown lower than normally worn, for illustrative purposes. Same, too, for the Fitbit. It’s normally worn clipped to the waist.

The devices I’m using are:

Until recently, I’d heard the most about Fitbit. It seemed like everyone I knew in the tech world had one. To me, it seemed a waste of time. Seemingly geared toward counting steps, how was the … [Read more]

Activision Shows Next-Gen Tech At GDC With Impressive Visuals

The next-generation of video game consoles will usher in some amazing visuals, which we already caught a glimpse of during Sony’s PlayStation 4 unveiling. Activision’s R&D department took center stage yesterday during the company’s GDC panel called “next-generation character rendering,” which after you see their tech demo, will have you wondering if it’s creepy or super awesome.

The real-time character demo is a 2-minute long video that highlights a number of amazing improvements in regards to a character’s facial gestures. The demo, which is all running in real-time, captures the actor’s face, eye movements, skin imperfections and nearly every emotion the actor could think of. (more…)

Samsung Galaxy S4 Pre-Sales Start At AT&T On April 16, Priced At $249.99 On 2-Year Agreement

gs4

AT&T has just posted an update to its Consumer Blog revealing pre-order details of the Samsung Galaxy S4. The phone will be available for order beginning April 16, for $249.99 with a two-year commitment. Samsung had previously announced that the Galaxy S4 would be coming to the U.S. sometime in Q2 2013, and didn’t reveal launch pricing at its event earlier in March.

The ship date of the AT&T Galaxy S4 wasn’t revealed this time around, so there’s still no guarantees about when consumers will be able to actual hold the hardware, which boasts a 5-inch 1080p display, in their hot little hands. Based on Jordan’s initial impressions, the Galaxy S4 looks like a worth successor to Samsung’s flagship smartphone role. The hardware specs include either 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, but AT&T hasn’t yet specified what exactly you’ll be getting for your $250.

Pricing for the Galaxy S4 at AT&T is interesting, since it puts the smartphone above the starting on-contract price of the iPhone 5 ($199.99 with contract), and also carries a lot more sticker shock than the $99 downpayment it’ll carry with T-Mobile when it launches with that carrier beginning May 1.

Samsung GALAXY S 4 pre-orders now live in the UK

We’re all waiting eagerly for Samsung’s new flagship smartphone to release into the ether, but it’s still a month away from its April 26 debut in the UK. However, Brits are now able to pre-order the GALAXY S 4 starting today at several wireless carriers and online retailers, including Amazon and Carphone Warehouse.

At Carphone Warehouse, you can pre-order the GALAXY S 4 off-contract for a steep £630. However, you can also grab the new phone from the retailer with a contract from either Orange, T-Mobile, or O2, which will obviously offset the cost of the device significantly, but you’ll have to sign away for a two-year contract in order to make that happen.

As for Amazon, you have your pick at a either a black or white version (same with Carphone Warehouse), both of which will cost the same £630 if you want to get it without a contract. With the pre-order, you’ll get £1 MP3 credit to use in Amazon’s MP3 Music Store. As for Unlocked Mobiles, you can grab a GALAXY S 4 for just £530, which is £100 cheaper than Amazon and Carphone Warehouse.

As for availability on other wireless carriers not mentioned, the GALAXY S 4 is available on EE, Vodafone, Three, and Virgin Mobile. EE seems like your best bet right now, as they’re the only carrier in the UK with a 4G LTE network. Of course, more wireless carriers in the UK will launch their own LTE network, but if you want LTE as soon as possible, EE is your only option right now.

You’ll Be Able to Buy a Cheaper, Smaller Samsung Galaxy S 4

Businessweek has a deep profile of Samsung detailing the company’s rise to the number one smartphone manufacturer in the world. The article appears to confirm what we’ve been expecting all along: that a smaller cheaper version of the Galaxy S 4 will arrive on the heels of the big S 4 next month. More »

Samsung Reportedly Debuting Stores-Within-A-Store At Best Buy Locations For Galaxy S4 Launch

samsung-stores

Samsung will reportedly be launching Samsung Stores in select Best Buy locations ahead of the Galaxy S4′s U.S. launch, a new report from Geek.com claims. The new sections, which will occupy spots close to the mobile department, will feature Samsung branding throughout and highlight a number of Samsung products, not just the upcoming Galaxy S4, though that flagship device will be the core focus.

The report from Geek.com says that at first the Samsung Stores will only be appearing at certain high-traffic locations, with training to begin for employees in the mobile departments at those stores soon. The store-within-a-store concept will roll out to other Best Buys following the launch later this year, with the ultimate goal of puting one in every U.S. location. We’ve reached to both Best Buy and Samsung for comment, but have yet to hear back at publication time.

Of course, there’s a good precedent for this sort of thing at Best Buy specifically, and it was set by a company that Samsung is generally keen to emulate: Apple. Apple’s dedicated mini-stores in Best Buy locations are unique in that they replicate almost exactly the in-store displays of Apple products in the company’s own standalone retail stores. It sounds like Samsung’s new in-store locations will resemble the Apple versions in both form and function, with the main intent being to have staff and space to properly demonstrate Samsung’s devices separate from those made by other OEMs.

If these Samsung Stores become a reality, it’s likely going to have the most effect on its fellow Android smartphone manufacturers, rather than Apple, however. Samsung is already setting itself apart from the competition in terms of market reach and global sales, but distinguishing itself on the physical retail floor will institutionalize a choice between Samsung and ‘all the rest’ for in-store shoppers.

Samsung is getting bolder in its marketing efforts, as was painfully apparent from its lavish, confusing Broadway spectacle earlier this month. If it wants to stand out, physically separating itself inside of Best Buy locations is another very good way to do so.

Make Your Own Game of Thrones Dragon Easter Eggs

Fans of Game of Thrones who love Daenerys Targaryen can put some really cool looking eggs in their Easter basket thanks to Jacquie LongLegs. She made her Easter eggs to look just like the dragon eggs in the HBO series.

dragon eggs
This only makes more sense as the Game of Thrones Season 3 premiere is coming this Easter Sunday. Hopefully they don’t really hatch baby dragons, because they would eat your Easter candy for one and make a mess of your house.

You can make these super cool eggs too. She shows you how it’s done in this short video. All you need are some styrofoam eggs, thumb tacks and acrylic or spray paint.

You will have the geekiest (and pokiest) Easter basket ever. You’d better get busy.

GDC 2013 award winners announced, Journey takes the cake

The 2013 Game Developers Conference has been going on all week long, and the Game Developers Choice Awards ceremony was held last night. Out of the 11 total awards that were given out, Journey took home six of them. The indie video game was released just over a year ago as a PS3 exclusive, and it’s been all the rage as of late.

Journey took home the crown jewel of awards during the conference: the Game of the Year award, as well as winning Best Audio, Best Game Design, Best Visual Arts, Best Downloadable Game, and the Innovation Award. As for the first-ever Audience Choice Award, that honor went to Dishonored, a 2012 stealth action-adventure game from Arkane Studios and Bethesda.

Other notable wins include the Best Narrative, which went to Telltale’s The Walking Dead, and the Best Debut went to the Kickstarter-funded FTL: Faster Than Light. Best Technology went to Ubisoft’s Far Cry 3, and the Best Handheld/Mobile Game went to The Room, which is an iOS game that released back in September.

This year’s GDC Awards ceremony was quite interesting, and they highlighted some great games that probably wouldn’t have made it to the mainstream. The awards ceremony certainly outperforms Spike TV’s attempt at a video game awards show, with their Video Game Awards that take place every year that doesn’t quite live up to gamers’ expectations.

Motion Capture Without Skintight Suits Will Make Blu-ray Extras Way Less Fun

Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics in Saarbrücken have developed a new type of motion capture system that doesn’t require the live action performers to wear those skintight body suits covered in cumbersome tracking markers. And the typical 360 degree array of infrared sensors capturing their movements can be reduced to just a handful of strategically placed video cameras. More »
