Smart bracelet glows with smartphone notifications

Embrace an Embrace+ bracelet.

Your phone isn’t always handy. It’s tucked away in a purse, on a table in another room, or lost in the depths of your messenger bag slung across your back as you’re biking. When it goes off, you can rush to find it, or you could get an Embrace+ smart bracelet and get an alert right on your wrist.

The notifications can be customized for incoming calls, app alerts, and messages. For example, your boyfriend could flash green and your mother could flash red. A calendar alert could flash yellow. You wouldn’t even need to hear your phone to know who’s calling. You can also set it for low-battery alerts, alarms, and social-media notifications.

Angry Birds Developer Releasing The Croods Mobile Game On iOS, Android

Rovio, who you should know by now as being the developer behind Angry Birds, announced today they’ll be teaming up with DreamWorks Animation to deliver a new mobile game for iOS and Android devices for the company’s upcoming film, The Croods, on March 14.

In addition to the mobile game, an exclusive animated short clip will also be published on March 14, just a week before The Croods is released in movie theaters on March 22.

Details in regards to how The Croods’ mobile game will play are scarce at the moment, but the game’s page on Rovio’s site shares the following information:

“Meet the world’s first modern family: The Croods! These cavemen are breaking out of the Stone Age with the use of a new r-evolutionary tool: the IDEA! The Croods will Hunt & Gather their way through spectacular new landscapes as they tame fantastic and never-seen-before creatures. Help The Croods survive the wild…and each other!”

Hunting? Gathering? Ideas? As long as we’re not flinging cavemen at trees in order for their fruit to drop, then we’ll give the game a try.

February is the cruelest month. An unconventional sentiment, maybe, but by now we’ve lost that New Year’s vigor, spring is still just out of arm’s reach, and our only escape is the dumping ground of post-awards-season Hollywood. But that’s ok! Because February also brought some major upheavals to our Best Gadgets roster. So turn away from those gray skies, and just keep staring at the shiny gadgets. Because by the time you manage to tear yourself away, spring just might have already sprung. More »

League of Legends Mac Client Now Available

League of Legends Mac Client Now Available

Ever since we heard League of Legends was expected to come to Mac, we immediately became excited as we’ve been long-time fans of the game, but owning a Mac made it impossible to enjoy the PC-only game.

Today, Riot Games has finally released its League of Legends OS X client as part of a public beta, which the company’s PR Manager Chris Heintz mentioned would be the case. And to help celebrate today’s momentous occasion, the company is making its iBlitzcrank skin available to its Blitzcrank support champion which we’re sure Mac users would absolutely love.

Considering the Mac client was originally scrapped back in 2011 due to performance and stability issues, today marks a pretty big moment in Riot Games’ history as now they can finally offer a worthwhile Mac version of their hugely-popular League of Legends game. (more…)

Premier League adopts goal-line tech, puts armchair pundits in tailspin

Image

We all have that one ghost goal that stays buried in our subconscious, be it Frank Lampard in 2011, Luis Garcia in 2005 or, erm, Frank Lampard in 2010. But perhaps such tribulations will end with the news that the Premier League is following in the footsteps of FIFA to institute goal-line technology from the 2013-2014 season. A Prem spokesperson told BBC and Sky News that all 20 clubs have to have the hardware in place for the start of the season. While the governing body hasn’t revealed which two providers are bidding for the job, as it’s always either GoalRef or Hawkeye, we’re likely to see one of them announcing their success at some point during the summer.

Nokia 105 Dumbphone Lasts 35 Days on a Single Charge

There are many reasons why people love their smartphones. They provide a seamless blend of communication and computing, are easy to use, and always with you. However, there are times when simple cell phones are still useful, especially when it comes to battery life.

The Nokia 105 was presented at the 2013 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, and it’s their most affordable phone up to date. It costs only €15 (~$20 USD) and it was intended for the first-time cell phone buyers. It comes with a bright screen, clear menus, and features like an FM radio, multiple alarm clocks, a dust and splash-proof keypad, as well as a flashlight.

Its most important feature is that it can last up to 35 days on a single charge – though it’s not clear how much of that is talk time and how much is standby time. This phone is definitely something useful to have as a backup device, in case of an emergency.

DARPA’s BigDog robot can throw cinder blocks farther than you

You may already know about the four-legged robot from DARPA and Boston Dynamics; we’ve talked about it in the past and how it’s supposed to help out military troops by carrying supplies over rough terrain and beyond. Now, the BigDog robot can throw objects, including concrete cinder blocks. However, instead of using one of its four legs, it actually uses an extending arm (which looks to be the robot’s head and neck) to throw objects.

Screen Shot 2013-03-01 at 2.50.08 PM

Boston Dynamics ended up recording a video of the robot throwing the cinder block across the testing field, and it’s quite impressive, but also extremely freaky and scary at the same time. You can watch as the robot grabs onto the cinder block and picks up while attempting to keep its balance. However, just as you think the robot might tip over, it flings its arm around and tosses the cinder block a good 30 feet or so.

Cinder blocks aren’t light by any means. They can weigh anywhere from 20 to 30 pounds, and most of us would have to use two hands to pick one up. After that, we’d probably only be able to throw one half the distant that the robot threw its cinder block. In any case, you now know that robots are capable of throwing heavy objects straight at you.

Of course, we’re not quite sure what the implications would be for a military robot that’s going to be used for carrying supplies. We’re guessing the arm could be used for moving small obstacles out of the way, or maybe hurling heavy objects (like cinder blocks) at enemies. Whatever the case, we now know what robots are capable of if they ever turn on us.

An Apple Airport Extreme Router Under $100 Is Your Deal of the Day

The Airport Extreme is the nicest router that Apple makes. As you’d expect from a $180 router, it has all the major features you’d want: simultaneous dual-band routing, gigabit ethernet ports, and the ability to add a USB hard drive. If you like flashing router firmware or futzing with network configurations, this is not a deal for you. But if you want a buy-it-and-never-think-about-it-again appliance that serves up rock solid Internet, you can’t go wrong with the Airport Extreme, especially if you’re a Mac person. More »

Law firms seek victims of ‘bad robot surgery’

(Credit: Video screenshot by Tim Hornyak/CNET)

Is a robot about to excise your prostate? Well stop right there, mister. Here’s some litigation that might interest you.

In a surreal twist to the ads you often see for legal help with accidents, arrests, or debt, law firms in Louisiana and Alabama are fishing for victims of what they call “bad robot surgery.”

The ad below from Becnel Law Firm, LLC and Riley & Jackson looks like something that would play in the background of a sci-fi film, but it’s serious. The campaign Web site Badrobotsurgery.com says, “Robotic surgery can severely injure the bowel, bladder, and blood vessels. Some of these injuries can even occur without the surgeon knowing it, which can lead to severe complications if left untreated.”

In a video on the site, Alabama surgeon Francois Blaudeau says Intuitive Surgical’s wildly popular da Vinci robot surgery system has injured patients who are having their prostate or uterus removed. He adds that the robot may not be properly insulated, causing burns or “even vascular injuries causing death.”
