Tongue Cover Promises to Help You Swallow Those Bitter Pills

We’ve seen some bizarre projects turn up on Indiegogo and other crowdsourced funding sites over the years. However, the Tongue Cover may well be the most bizarre ever.

The product is designed to cover the taste buds on the tongue so you don’t taste the disgusting liquid medicines you have to swallow when you’re sick.  On the surface, it sounds like a pretty good idea.

As a parent, I’ve literally had to sit on my kids before to get them to take antibiotics. That said, I think the odds of getting a kid to slide what amounts to a condom over their tongue are just about as slim as getting them to willingly swallow their medications – if not worse.

I’m not trying to be humorous either, the pre-production prototype absolutely looks like a condom. The product is only recommended for single use due to hygienic and legal reasons according to the creator of the Tongue Cover.

You might think making tongue condoms would be an inexpensive proposition. Apparently, it’s not, the project is seeking $70,000(USD) by March 30, 2013, and as of this writing has raised a whopping $46. If you can’t live without this tongue cover, 25 bucks will get you 30 of them with an estimated delivery in May.

A Million Times Spells Words With 288 Clocks

A Million Times Spells Words With 288 ClocksThe analog clock will never go out of vogue for sure, but to turn it into an art piece will definitely require a fair amount of creative juices as well as resourcefulness. Case in point, the A Million Times project is an art installation by Stockholm-based studio Humans since 1982. You can say that A Million Times was inspired by their previous work, the Clock Clock project that boasted of two dozen analog clocks which functioned as a single unit. This time around, the A Million Times project will see the use of 288 clocks, and all of them are controlled by custom software on an iPad.

All 288 clocks will move and ripple in order to create art that is different, in addition to telling the time and spell out words, if it needs be. The undertaking is definitely an enormous one, but there is nothing quite like sheer grit and determination to see things through. It is always interesting to see how the contrasting black hands on the white faces move in order to create numbers, spell out words and form shapes.

Wacom HD Mobile Tablet In The Pipeline

Wacom HD Mobile Tablet In The PipelineSo, the dust over at Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, has settled, and we are done with the second big show of the year, and are looking forward to what CeBIT has to offer next. Since we have reverted to regular programming, so to speak, how about a little teaser from the likes of Wacom? The famous digitizer tablet manufacturer has decided to use Facebook as the avenue of choice, posting a teaser that claims they will deliver a mobile tablet to the masses later “this summer” that will sport a pressure-sensitive professional pen (no surprises there), alongside a multi-touch capability and an HD display.

Other than that, Wacom had remained mum on other more functional details, including the kind of operating system that the upcoming tablet will run on. Just what kind of tablet do you think Wacom has up their sleeves this time around? Will it be evolutionary in nature, or would it be revolutionary instead? I personally prefer the latter, as it will increase the curve of innovation more than gradual improvements.

Logitech Announces Layoffs In Order To Focus On Its Mobile Accessories

Logitech Announces Layoffs In Order To Focus On Its Mobile Accessories

Fans of Logitech’s accessories will probably be bummed to hear the company has announced it plans to lay off 140 of its employees, or nearly 5 percent of its non-direct workforce. The layoffs are being implemented as part of an organizational alignment which the company hopes will help make the company become “a faster, more profitable company.”

Logitech plans to focus more on its mobile accessories such as the Ultrathin Keyboard Cover for iPad as its PC accessories business hasn’t been performing as well as the company would hope.

As a result of the realignment, Logitech expects to save between $16 to $18 million in its 2014 fiscal year. (more…)

Google Play Books App Updated

Google Play Books App UpdatedGoogle has recently updated their Play Books application, throwing in a bunch of new improvements of course. After all, what good is an update if everything else remained the same? Users who have given the new Google Play Books app on Android would most probably have noticed speed increases in addition to a new list view when it comes to your purchased digital tomes. Apart from that, you are also able to filter based on book type, which would be ideal if you have built up quite a reputable collection in order to narrow down a story in a long list.

Flipping through pages is now easy peasy, and is touted to be the smoothest on the platform, where it will make use of RenderScript and OpenGL in order to mimic the careful fold of a page. Thing is, the Google Play Books app still cannot import your own books, which is a bummer considering how iBooks for iOS has that feature. You can give the updated Google Play Books app a go here if you are interested.

Texting Could Make You Smarter

Texting Could Make You SmarterI don’t know about you, but where I grew up, we were taught the Queen’s English, and abbreviations were very much shunned upon in our writing. The advent of text messaging on mobile phones and via IRC (yeah, there was no such thing as Skype back then, and to have an ICQ account was the “in thing”) helped evolve the English language, as short forms and the removal of vowels became the norm in an effort to be more concise in communications (as well as to save money by not passing the 160 character mark in a SMS). Most folks would lament that this makes modern day kids and adults less proficient at communication, but linguist John McWhorter begs to differ, touting that texting is actually a “linguistic miracle happening right under our noses.”

McWhorter said, “If humanity existed for 24 hours, writing only came around at 11:07 p.m.” In a nutshell, he figures out that being bidialectal (one in “texting mode” while the other is natural writing and conversation) would help you exercise different parts of your brain, and eventually, that might help increase your IQ. Who knows?

Rovio and DreamWorks launching The Croods on March 14

Rovio isn’t slowing down its development of new games, and it’s latest project is a collaboration with DreamWorks Animation Studio to launch a new game based on the upcoming movie The Croods. The game is set to launch on March 14, just two day before Rovio’s Angry Birds Toons will be premiering, and will be releasing one week before the theatrical release of the movie.

Screen Shot 2013-03-01 at 11.22.33 AM

Rovio and DreamWorks will be launching the new mobile game on iOS and Android, and will also be releasing an exclusive short animated clip to go along with the game. The game take place during the fictional “Croodaceous period,” and it features the Croods “breaking out of the Stone Age with the use of a new r-evolutionary tool: the IDEA!”

The movie will release in theaters on March 22, and it stars Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, and Emma Stone. Reynolds starred in The Green Lantern and Stone starred in The Amazing Spider-Man. The Croods is about “the world’s first family” as they embark on a journey and discover an incredible new world outside their cave that’s filled with different creatures.

The teaser trailer above shows us a short animated clip promoting the new game. It features the Croods going after what looks to be a fruit hanging from a tree, although we’re not exactly sure what it is. We do see a bit of actual gameplay towards the end of the teaser, but only for a split second before an angry fist come in to smash the smartphone and tablet screens.

Wacom Teases Mobile Tablet With Pro Pressure Sensitivity, Multi-Touch And HD Display Coming This Summer

surface-pro

Wacom, the leading player when it comes to pressure-sensitive input devices aimed at photo and digital art professionals, has teased an upcoming mobile tablet product on its Facebook account. In response to what Wacom characterizes as outspoken customer feedback, the company says it’s working on a a device with “a pressure-sensitive professional pen, smooth multi-touch, an HD display, and other valuable features that you haven’t seen in other tablets.”

The tablet device is said to be something Wacom is working on “24/7,” with a target launch date of sometime this summer. Wacom provides the underlying technology behind a number of current tablets with pressure-sensitive stylus input, including the Surface Pro and Samsung’s Galaxy Note line, so it’s no stranger to doing pressure sensitivity on mobile devices. The company’s own hardware has generally been limited to peripherals, however, like its Bamboo, Intuos and Cintiq line of USB-powered drawing tablets, all of which require a host computer to operate.

Now, it looks like Wacom wants to branch out into an own-branded standalone tablet device. The tease shares nothing about what platform the device would be based around, but Android is a good bet. Penny Arcade co-creator Mike “Gabe” Krahulik also recently articulated at length his love for the Surface Pro and its built-in Wacom tech for creating digital art, so a device based on Windows 8 also isn’t outside the realm of possibility.

The only challenge for Wacom might be keeping a standalone device affordable. The Cintiq line of drawing tablets with built-in screens it currently offers start at $899 for the 12WX, which has a 12.1-inch display, but again requires a connected computer to function. Getting a self-sufficient Wacom tablet to a level where it meets the standards of the company’s demanding pros probably won’t come cheap, but the level of tech and the supply chain associated with the necessary components has also matured considerably since the 12WX was introduced in 2007. The proliferation of tablets and smartphones have helped putting more advanced technology in ever-smaller packages increasingly affordable.

I reached out to Wacom to see if they could provide more detail on this upcoming product, and will update if they respond with additional information.

Facebook Tests New Timeline Designs, ‘Like Page’ Button

Facebook Tests New Timeline Designs, Like Page Button

Did you just start getting used to Facebook’s Timeline to a point where you’re actually starting to like it? That’s too bad because Facebook is announcing they’re going to be making some changes to it, which we’re sure you’re going to hate anyways.

Instead of your Timeline’s current double-layer layout, the test Timeline pages will adopt a single-column layout that will show off all of your posts and updates. The left side of your page, which was used for the double-layer Timeline layout, will contain all of the information located in your “About” section (more…)
