Banning Catcher Crashes

Former catcher and current St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny is in the news for his opinion on catchers blocking home plate, and generally when an article begins with a sentence like “former player and current manager so-and-so is in the news for his opinion about an aspect of the sport he played and works in,” it’s because he wishes something about his current job was more like it was back in his day. Not so this time: On Tuesday he voiced his recent conversion to the idea that collisions at home plate, between runners trying to score and the catchers trying to stop them, should be banned.

Transgender Mississippi Student ‘Leah’ Supported By High School While Students Protest

Students at a Batesville, Miss. high school are protesting because they believe that a transgender classmate is receiving “special treatment.”

As WLOX 13 reports, over 30 students at South Panola High School have vocalized their opposition to a transgender girl identified only as Leah, who has been allowed to wear female clothing.

The group of students arrived to school dressed in gym shorts and sweatpants, but they were not allowed into the building. They reportedly opted to disobey the dress code in an effort to protest what they describe as “special treatment” of Leah.

Matchbook Art: Joseph Martinez Paints Miniature Masterpieces On Tiny Canvases

Artists seem to be downsizing these days, and not just because of the economy. We were recently amazed by Nikolai Aldunin’s miniscule sculptures, while Jason D’Aquino charmed us this past October with his matchbook sketches. Now we present the next contender to the tiny throne, Joseph Martinez.

The Colorado transplant paints labor-intensive scenes on the underside of matchbooks in a new exhibition in San Francisco titled, “A Little Piece of the Bay” — an homage to his Bay Area return. Scroll down to see a slideshow of Martinez’s incredible matchbook paintings, and let us know what you think of his micro-art in the comments.

Death Creates A Complicated Process For Facebook Photos

BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) — A grieving Oregon mother who battled Facebook for full access to her deceased son’s account has been pushing for years for something that would prevent others from losing photos, messages and other memories — as she did.

“Everybody’s going to face this kind of a situation at some point in their lives,” says Karen Williams, whose 22-year-old son died in a 2005 motorcycle accident.

The Oregon Legislature responded and took up the cause recently with a proposal that would have made it easier for loved ones to access the “digital assets” of the deceased, only to be turned back by pressure from the tech industry, which argued that both a 1986 federal law and voluntary terms of service agreements prohibit companies from sharing a person’s information — even if such a request were included in a last will and testament.

Baby Dinosaurs Were Eaten By Crocodile-Like Prehistoric Beasts, Fossils Suggest

Crocodile-like beasts may have nibbled on young dinosaurs some 75 million years ago, according to scientists who analyzed bite marks on dinosaur bones.

The findings suggest the rivalry between the reptiles started early in life, the researchers say.

Bites from living crocodylians such as alligators and crocodiles are often seen on the bones of their prey and scavenged bodies. Scientists can use these to identify bite marks on fossils from crocodyliforms, the reptiles to which modern crocodylians belong.

Research investigating crocodyliforms from the age of dinosaurs has often focused on the largest such reptiles feeding on equally giant dinosaurs. Now, paleontologists have direct evidence of a small crocodyliform biting juvenile dinosaurs.

Land Rover EV prototypes tread lightly uphill, recharge on the way down

Land Rover EV prototype treads lightly uphill, recharges on the way down

Instant torque feels delicious on the highway, but it could be an even bigger asset in an offroader. Land Rover has been experimenting with electric versions of its Defender 110 for a while now, and claims its latest prototypes benefit from a reduction in wheel spin due to the single-speed motor, making them more adept at climbing and less likely to churn up the environment. The prototypes don’t necessarily stand out in terms of raw specs: they’re 25 percent heavier than turbodiesel models, with lower horsepower and torque ratings, and with a range of just 50 miles. They try to make up for it in other ways, however, with the ability to deliver up to eight hours of slow, grueling off-road time, where range is secondary to staying upright, and by exploiting Land Rover’s Hill Descent Control feature for faster recharging through regenerative braking. There’s no plan to bring an EV Defender to market any time soon, or to run the Dakar gauntlet like some rivals have, but the prototypes are due to make appearance at the Geneva Motor Show before being tested for painful-sounding “specialist applications” later in the year.

PowerSkin for iPhone 5 now available

Back during CES, we mentioned that PowerSkin was working on a number of external battery cases for the Apple iPhone line. Not too long ago we talked about the company’s PoP’n case that sticks to the back of the iPhone 5. If you didn’t like the idea of a battery hanging off the back of your smartphone, you may prefer the PowerSkin case that is now available.

powerskin-ip5

This is the classic PowerSkin case made in a form factor specifically for the iPhone 5. The case will protect the iPhone 5 from scratches and drops thanks to a one-piece silicone case design that wraps all the way around the iPhone. The internal battery has 1500 mAh of power.

PowerSkin promises that the case will extend talk time up to 6.5 hours, extend Wi-Fi usage up to eight hours, and expand standby time up to 182 hours. The case measures 2.5 x .65 x 5.1-inches and weighs 0.18 pounds. That means the case shouldn’t add significantly to the weight or bulk of the iPhone in your pocket.

The battery inside the case will begin to charge the iPhone 5 at the press of a button. The case also ships with an earphone extender for the Apple headphones included with the iPhone 5 and any other 3.5 mm headphones. The case is available and shipping right now for $79.99.
