New Tablet Camera Tech Conjures an Invisible Keyboard

Relying on your tablet’s on-screen keyboard saves you from having to carry clunky accessories, but it also gobbles up a good chunk of usable screen real estate. So Fujitsu researchers are working on a happy medium that uses the tablet’s camera to track your finger movements on a desk, as if you were typing away on an invisible keyboard. More »

Best Buy announces fourth quarter net loss of $377 million, no rescue bid coming from founder

It’s a hard time to be in the tech-retail sector, a fact that Best Buy knows all too well. The business has announced a fourth quarter net loss of $377 million on revenues of $16.7 billion. Incoming CEO Hubert Joly was upbeat despite the bad numbers, saying that the company’s domestic sales helped offset its failures overseas. At the same time, Best Buy announced that founder Richard Schulze’s attempted bid to buy back his company had failed, as the deadline for his offer expired at the end of February. As such, the company will now concentrate on turning a profit without any Apple store-style reinvention.

Sony Xperia C670X Specs Leak, Suggesting A New Android Flagship To Take On The HTC One

xperia-z

We didn’t see a new phone from Sony at MWC this year, though it did take the opportunity to show off the Xperia Z (pictured) it demoed early this year at CES, but a new rumor suggests we’ll see a mid-year upgrade in a few months time that packs Android 4.2, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 chipset with 1.8GHz processor, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage.

The leaked specs come from a tipster providing info to Xperia Blog, and also suggest the C670X will be smaller than the Xperia 7, with a 4.8-inch screen compared to the announced device’s 5-inch display. In most regards, the C670X sounds like a beefed up Xperia 7, however, with a more powerful processor, Adreno 320 graphics and double the on-board storage, while retaining a 13 megapixel rear camera and the same 1920 x 1080 resolution. The device’s pixel density will be higher, however, since those same pixels are fitting in a smaller screen, making for more crisp text and graphics rendering.

If true, this new handset would be pretty much on par with HTC’s flagship One smartphone, which has a 1.7GHz Snapdragon 600 chipset, and an Adreno 320 GPU. No word on whether the C670X would also inherit the Xperia Z’s impressive water resistance, which could be a tipping point factor for buyers looking to make a decision between the two.

These leaked specs should be treated with a healthy dollop of skepticism (it was accompanied with a render from the setup guide from the Xperia Z, which admittedly doesn’t depict the Xperia Z itself), but they’re far from extreme, and Sony fielding a phone in 2013 that takes advantage of the latest in mobile processor technology does make sense.

This Lego Fortress of Solitude Should Be a Set

We all want to be Superman, but sadly can’t be—so maybe the nearest we can get is building his pad out of Lego. At least that’s what Chris Melby thought when he constructed this sensational model of the Fortress of Solitude from scratch. More »

Griffin MouthStick Stylus

I know that we live in an age where medical advances abound, but we are still not quite on the same level as that of Star Wars or Star Trek yet, where neural implants and cybernetics have advanced to such a point, where even a severely weakened Darth Vader could still end up being an imposing Sith Lord with the help of Emperor Palpatine and his reconstructive medical center. Having said that, here is a new age device that has debuted at HIMSS13, where it is known as the Griffin MouthStick Stylus and was specially designed after receiving the necessary input from medical professionals.

The Griffin MouthStick Stylus intends to expand the world of tablets, where it will bring touchscreen and button interaction to those who are living with manual disabilities. The Griffin MouthStick Stylus will fit the bill nicely, where it was specially designed to provide comfort, stability and control while being held in the mouth.

TMN Go launches on iOS and the web, brings HBO Go-style experience to Canadians

TMN Go launches on iOS and the web, brings HBO Gostyle experience to Canadians

While viewers in the US have had access to HBO Go streaming on a varying number of platforms over the last few years, the licensing situation in Canada has, until now, made it more complicated. That’s changing today, since Astral Media is bringing its The Movie Network Go app for iOS and PCs out of beta (an Android version is “in the works and launching shortly”) with access to movies from many studios, as well as TV shows from HBO, Cinemax and Showtime. In Canada, Astral airs content licensed from our US premium networks as well as some Canadian productions and airs them on its five multiplex channels, including HBO Canada.

Some providers have already been streaming content online with setups like Rogers On Demand Online and Videotron’s Illico, but hopefully this should make the feature more widespread. Currently it’s open to customers on Bell Fiber / Satellite TV and Cogeco Cable, with Rogers due “in the coming weeks.” Specific features announced include streaming over WiFi or 3G, playback state that syncs across devices, up to three simultaneous streams and five registered devices per account and more. Check out the press release after the break for all the details and a list of some of the available content.

Griffin unveils MouthStick stylus for the disabled

If you’ve ever been around anyone who suffered a serious injury to the spinal column as a result of an automobile crash or other accident, you know how difficult or impossible it can be for people battling these injuries to do the things most of us take for granted. While people with full mobility are able to quickly and easily flip the pages on their iPad or other tablet, not everyone can do that. For instance, a person with no control over their arms or limited control may not be able to use a tablet at all.

IPad accessory maker Griffin has announced a new accessory aimed at users of the iPad who have have no control over their limbs or very limited control. The accessory is called the MouthStick and it is a long, curved stylus that allows people to use head movements to control the tablet. The accessory is designed to be held in the mouth allowing people to flip pages and press icons on the screen of the tablet.

Griffin says that the MouthStylus was specifically engineered for people that have fine motor impairments and is designed to allow them to manipulate touch screens and buttons in comfort. The stylus can do more than operate touchscreen interfaces, Griffin also says that you can use it to hit keys on laptop keyboards and to work the Apple Magic Trackpad. The stylus consists of four different parts.

The part that goes in the mouth is made from food-grade stainless steel. The stainless steel is covered with BPA-and latex-free silicone rubber mouthpiece sleeves to protect the teeth. On the end of the stylus is a conductive silicone rubber tip. The body of the stylus is made from an adjustable aluminum gooseneck shaft. The MouthStick stylus will be available in Q2 for $29.99. Griffin will also offer replacement sleeves for the mouthpiece and replacement silicone rubber tips.

BlackBerry 10 Software Gets 10.0.10.85 Update

BlackBerry 10 Software Gets 10.0.10.85 UpdateThe BlackBerry 10 operating system was released at the end of January, and it did not take more than a quarter for a new software update to be issued by BlackBerry, bringing the BlackBerry 10 operating system to hit version 10.0.10.85. Just what kind of improvements do you think you can experience with the latest software update?

For starters, it is said that 3rd party application performance has increased, allowing developers to build apps which will run fast and smooth just for you. Not only that, Gmail calendars on BlackBerry 10 will run fine and dandy from now on with the new update, in addition to improvements in the BlackBerry Hub which allows you to log calls as well as log how conversations are handled. The camera should also see an improvement especially in low light conditions, and the Web browser should also be able to handle video playback better, too. The BlackBerry 10 software update weighs in at approximately 150MB in size, so it would be best to stick to a Wi-Fi connection for a faster download.
