iPad Works With Self-Driving Car

I know that Apple’s Maps have received its fair share of brickbats since it was released, but that is pretty much water under the bridge by now. In fact, we now have word that Apple’s iPad has been used to integrate itself in a self-driving car, where it will handle navigation as well as user interface duties. As for the former, I sure as heck hope that it relies on Google Maps and not Apple Maps! This self-driving car was made possible thanks to researchers over at Oxford University, having come up with the relevant robotic technology that enables drivers let the iPad do all the “driving”.

Professor Paul Newman of Oxford University’s Department of Engineering Science, said, “We are working on a low-cost ‘auto drive’ navigation system, that doesn’t depend on GPS, done with discrete sensors that are getting cheaper all the time. It’s easy to imagine that this kind of technology could be in a car you could buy.”

This technology is far from perfect, and is definitely not ready for commercial production, although the long term goal is to churn out a system that costs approximately £100, which is a whole lot less compared to the current prototype navigation system that costs a whopping £5,000.

Bing Maps Gets New World Imagery

Bing Maps Gets New World ImageryThe folks over at Microsoft have just upgraded Bing Maps, this time around throwing a whole lot more images than hopefully you will have time to go through, and there is no word on just how large the update file’s size is this time around, although it will comprise of a whopping 13,799,276 square kilometers of high resolution satellite shots. Those who are wondering what lurks beneath the ocean too, will be able to enjoy a far more intimate view of the ocean floor.

The all new “straight down” photos will provide the base map with a resolution of 15 meters per pixel, and when Microsoft decided to throw in bathymetric imagery that changes the ocean’s hue depending on its depth, you have got quite the looker here for curious eyes and minds. The Bing Maps update will not have that many clouds too, so that you can see more of the earth instead of waking up your craving for cotton candy. Bing Maps is proud to cover the whole of the US, in addition to 90% of Western Europe, thanks to images shot from aircraft. [Press Release]

Sony Ericsson Windows Phone Jolie Prototype Arrives On eBay

Sony Ericsson Windows Phone Jolie Prototype Arrives On eBayYou know something? Back in the day when there was no Sony Mobile, it was Sony Ericsson, and I still remember the buzz that surrounded the Sony Ericsson T68i that came with a color display and Bluetooth connectivity, now was that novel or what? Well, here is a relic from the past as it still carries the Sony Ericsson name, although its appearance on eBay is definitely a pleasant one, being a Windows Phone prototype smartphone that ran on the Windows Phone platform.

Originally leaked in March a couple of years ago, it was captured on video as recently as June last year. The Sony Ericsson Jolie is a slider smartphone, where it underwent testing to see whether it is worthy enough to adopt the Windows Phone platform. There were only a few of these Jolie prototypes around, and one of them is now on eBay, featuring an early Windows Phone 7 build while sporting 16GB of internal memory and an 8-megapixel shooter. Right now, bids have yet to break the €200 mark, but with slightly more than a week to go for the auction, you might kiss goodbye to that price ceiling soon. [Auction Page]

Sony C670X Details Leaked

Sony C670X Details LeakedI am wondering when will smartphones break the 2GHz mark when it comes to processor speed, as we are getting dangerously close to that level. Take the latest leaked details of the Sony C670X into consideration for instance – it comes with a 4.8” Full HD display to keep up with the Joneses, in addition to a quad-core 1.8GHz Snapdragon 600 processor alongside Adreno 320 graphics that ought to keep you drooling already.

If those are not enough, how about 2GB RAM to whet your appetite, where that is accompanied by 32GB of internal memory alongside a 13-megapixel Exmor RS camera at the back, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean in tow. Whispers on the grapevine have it that the Sony C670X is tipped for a launch sometime in the middle of the year, and we do hope that there will be a nickname attached to the handset instead of having to memorize pesky model numbers. Still, it remains to be seen if the leaked details are legit or not, since the image shows a similar setup guide found in the Xperia Z. Only time will tell the legitimacy of the Sony C670X.

Panasonic – Emergency light that can run on any size battery – BF-BM10

Another product that would really be useful in the event of an emergency such as a major earthquake is this emergency light by Panasonic.
When there is an emergency, stocks of supplies are often low, if non-existent. Two years ago after the earthquake in Japan, stocks such as water and food were low. And so were batteries as there were rolling blackouts throughout Japan.
This light takes any size batteries, truly making it convenient in the case of an emergency. If only a mixed assortment of …

Jaws and Star Trek IV props hit the auction block

We have talked about some interesting items that turned up on the auction block from some the biggest movies in cinema history over the years. Not long ago we talked about the racing suit that Ricky Bobby wore in Talladega Nights. Some new and very interesting movie props have turned up for auction with a company called ScreenUsed.

jaws

Among the props are a bunch of rare items from the classic Steven Spielberg movie Jaws. Among the Jaws artifacts up for auction include Quint’s machete, Hooper’s dive mask, a section of the orca, a shark tail section, and the original Jaws tooth mold and teeth samples. These items will go for auction on March 9.

If Jaws isn’t one of your favorite films, the company is also auctioning off a number of props used in science fiction films and other action flicks. One of the coolest is a Facehugger puppet from AVP: Alien Vs. Predator. Another of the more interesting items is the Blade Runner Blaster and Deckerd’s Shirt that Harrison Ford wore in the science fiction classic.

Fans of more recent films can also bid on props from The Dark Knight, specifically the Glock Pistol and knife that the Joker played by Heath ledger used in the film. There are also various props from other classic movies such as Rambo, Serenity, Star Trek IV, Terminator 2, Troy, and other films. Trekkies will want to get their wallets out, because the props from Star Trek IV include a Klingon costume and mask.

Happy Birthday, Raspberry Pi! A Chat With Creators Eben And Liz Upton, Pi-Friend Limor Fried

Screen Shot 2013-03-01 at 7.51.11 AM

The Raspberry Pi project is one year old today, having launched on February 29, 2012 (they’re going to have a rager of a party in 2016.) I sat down with the Pi-parents themselves, Eben and Liz Upton, as well as Pi-supporter Limor Fried AKA Lady Ada of Adafruit Industries to talk about the special occasion.

The current incarnation of the Pi, the Model B, just sold its millionth unit and the Uptons are hard at work at new versions of the beloved mini-computer. The popularity has stunned supporters in the UK and the US alike and we talked about education, the future of the Pi, the mystery of the ultra-rare Model A owned by Lady Ada, the only unit of its kind in America.

“I remember when Raspberry Pis were rare enough that I had a spreadsheet that told me where they were in the world,” said Eben. “Now we’re a million Pis in.”

The Pi is computing of the best sort – it’s a little intimidating at first and then an amazing amount of fun. If the Upton’s vision comes to fruition, expect to see an entire generation of computer-educated kids rolling through the school systems around the world, ready to take on the future.

‘Machine vision’ MFT cam arrives for robotics, remote photography, special effects

SVSVistek outs industrial M43 cam for robots, aerial photography, crashcams

If you’re asking yourself “where’s the shutter button on that thing?” then a new machine vision camera from SVS-Vistek, the SVCam-evo “Tracer” is probably not for you. However, it may spark tinkerers or other niches as the boxy look belies its capabilities. For starters, it packs a micro four thirds mount with a Truesense CCD sensor, opening the door to lenses a cut above the usual industrial fare. You’ll also get frame rates of 146, 85, 40 and 21 fps at 1, 2, 4 and 8-megapixels, respectively, along with auto gain; exposure, focus and electric zoom control; PC software for basic image capture; and a GigE Vision interface. The latter — along with a Windows and Linux SDK — will make the device ideal for those who don’t mind digging into code for applications like robotics, aerial and remote imaging or even “special effects and unique POV” cinematography. The rest of us won’t be able to just fire it up and take pictures, however, and as for the price? There’s no word yet on that or availability, but don’t expect a consumer-friendly figure.

Microsoft facing EU browser fine by end of March claim insiders

Microsoft faces a potentially huge fine from the European Union over its PC browser choice goof last year, with insiders claiming the penalty will be imposed before the end of March. “The Commission is planning to fine Microsoft before the Easter break” a source familiar with the investigation told Reuters; though the exact amount Microsoft faces in penalties is unknown, there are whispers that it will be considerable since this will be the second time the company has not complied with the EU.

Microsoft_Choice_Screen_28m

Microsoft fell foul of “a technical error” which meant that some Windows PCs failed to show the browser selection screen the company had agreed to install on new computers, after complaints that preloading Internet Explorer as the default app amounted to anti-competitive behavior. All went well, until a glitch in the system meant 28m PCs failed to show the screen, a problem which went unnoticed for more than a year.

The EU warned Microsoft it would be taking action back in October 2012, and at the time the maximum fine that could be levied was totaled up as in the region of $7.4bn. That’s not necessarily going to be the final amount, but the number could easily dwarf the not-inconsiderable $2.1bn Microsoft has already paid in various antitrustpenalties.

An EU spokesperson declined to comment on the rumors. Microsoft is also yet to comment on the possibility of a March punishment, though the company did give a statement late last year regarding the gaffe.

“We take this matter very seriously and moved quickly to address this problem as soon as we became aware of it. Although this was the result of a technical error, we take responsibility for what happened, and we are strengthening our internal procedures to help ensure something like this cannot happen again. We sincerely apologize for this mistake and will continue to cooperate fully with the Commission” Microsoft

Microsoft’s board has already spanked Steve Ballmer, metaphorically speaking, with a bonus cut last year, justified in part by the antitrust issue. Whether the company’s executives will face further censure will likely depend on the amount of the new fine.
