ATD: Gates, Ballmer and Sean Parker join Zuckerberg's FWD.us lobby group

Mark Zuckerberg showed he’s more than just a social butterfly earlier this month, forming the tech-focused political lobby group FWD.us alongside some other big names in the industry. Now, according to AllThingsD, a few more heavy-hitters have signed up to offer their expertise, including Sean Parker (Napster co-founder) and Microsoft’s Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer and Brad Smith. Not a bad crew to have on your side when technology issues are up for discussion, especially Ballmer — he’s notoriously good at getting his point across.

Update: This post has been corrected to reflect that the Brad Smith involved is General Counsel and EVP at Microsoft, and not Intuit CEO Brad Smith.

Dell Delivers 4G LTE Wireless Connectivity For Windows 8 Tablet

Dell Delivers 4G LTE Wireless Connectivity For Windows 8 TabletDell is venturing into unchartered territory at the moment, at least from their point of view, by throwing in 4G LTE wireless connectivity for their Windows 8-powered tablet. The tablet in question that we are referring to here would be the Dell XPS 10, where it will run on the RT version of Windows 8. Dell’s statement read, “Today, we’re introducing an AT&T 4G LTE mobile broadband version for US customers on Dell.com, providing professionals with the same fast, reliable, high-speed internet connection as on their smartphones for connectivity anytime, anywhere.”

Hmmm, hopefully it will be able to live up to its reputation. After all, the Dell XPS 10 is somewhat an oddball tablet even in the midst of top-tier PC manufacturers, where it mostly boils down to the RT version of Windows 8 running underneath the hood. Not only that, the Dell XPS 10 is powered by a Qualcomm ARM processor instead of NVIDIA’s version. Well, if you want an LTE-totin’ Dell XPS 10, you would need to fork out an additional $100 for it, hitting $749 in the process, where it will be accompanied by 64GB of internal memory. In comparison, the 64GB iPad 4 with LTE would cost you $829 a pop.

Vertus adds stereo Bluetooth to any pair of powered speakers… if they have a 3.5mm jack

Vertus adds stereo capability

Nowadays we’re spoiled with options in the Bluetooth speaker market, and many of the high-end ones — especially those from Soundfreaq and Nokia — even feature dual-system streaming (DSS) that lets one speaker pair with another to enable true stereo playback. But if you already have a pair of old but nice-sounding speakers with 3.5mm input on both, then here’s a quick and easy way to add Bluetooth to them. Dubbed Vertus, this Kickstarter project features the above pair of receivers based on CSR’s TrueWireless Stereo, a nifty technology that’s been made available since early 2009.

Similar to any DSS system, one of the Vertus dongles (the right channel, in this case) acts as the master to receive the stereo stream from a Bluetooth source, and then it’d throw the left-channel stream to the other dongle. So provided that your speakers have their own power source to amplify, it’s just a matter of charging these aluminum dongles up (a single charge lasts up to 10 hours), plugging them in and then pairing the right receiver with your audio source. Simple! That said, at $120 this kit may struggle to gain traction in retail, so hopefully the audio quality will somewhat justify the price. Introductory video after the break.

Lightpack Ambient Lighting Kit

Lightpack Ambient Lighting KitPhilips and their Ambilight technology certainly ushered in something different for the mass market a few years back, and it is not something that you would be able to find on other non-Philips devices around the home. Well, the Lightpack is an idea that might change that situation eventually, where it is currently looking to raise funds on Kickstarter. Just what is Lightpack all about? It is actually a bunch of LEDs, accompanied by a few wires and a small black box, but do not take it at face value. Instead, check out what it can do in the long run – which is to create glowing effects which will mimic whatever is being shown.

Not quite the same idea as Ambilight, but imagine having the Lightpack “expand” the light and colors from the explosion on your screen onto the wall, and this also, assuming that you are viewing the latest action movie in a dark room with all other sources of light turned off. Not only that, Lightpack can also be programmed to send over colorful alerts from a range of other apps, with email, Twitter and Facebook alerts being just the beginning. Do you have faith that the Lightpack would make it big?

Motorola Photon Q Gets Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Update

Motorola Photon Q Gets Android 4.1 Jelly Bean UpdateWe did take the Motorola Photon Q out for an in-depth spin in September last year, and we are pleased to announce that at long last, owners of the Motorola Photon Q would be able to wrap their fingers around the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update. I guess this is a good thing, as at the very least, it gives additional mileage to the smartphone. Heck, older handsets released last year seem to be on a Jelly Bean roll lately, and the HTC One S is one of them, too. Just what will Android 4.1 Jelly Bean bring to the table other than a rather lengthy list of bug fixes?

Sprint and Motorola have worked together to deliver the Jelly Bean update for the slider smartphone, where the update is known as 9.8.2Q-122_XT897_FFW-5. Of course, this means your precious Motorola Photon Q would now be on the receiving end of the likes of Project Butter and Google Now that ought to make you fend off the clarion call of the Samsung Galaxy S4…at least for a while. Have you grabbed this Over The Air (OTA) update already, and assuming you answered in the affirmative, how has it been treating you?

Amazon Updates Native Kindle For Android App

Amazon Updates Native Kindle For Android AppEarlier today, those who were using the Kindle app for Android might have noticed something new, especially since today is the day when Amazon rolled out an update for its native Kindle app for Android, with the main spotlight being centered on design. If you have yet to perform an update for your Kindle app, you are able to grab the latest version from Google Play.

This would be a major release, bumping up the app version to version 4.0. Obviously there are other changes apart from cosmetic ones, but the most noticeable one, at this point in time, would be a refreshed user interface where you can check out a sample of it above. First of all, the redesigned library would ditch the basic grid of book covers, adopting instead a carousel at the top that displays recent items. Other than that, there would also be an expanded navigation panel that has been updated to include quick access to your books, documents, and newsstand periodicals. Definitely a time saver if these are the segments that you tend to pore over on a regular basis.

Do you like what Amazon has done with their native Kindle app for Android?

AT&T Gloats Over On-Time Galaxy S4 Release

AT&T Gloats Over On Time Galaxy S4 ReleaseThey say never kick your opponent when he or she is down, but I suppose all’s fair when it comes to business rivalry. We do know that the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S4 from Sprint has been delayed, and the smartphone itself is running into constrained supplies with the reason of high demand behind it. This is a good problem to have, as folks would see it that way, but the good people over at AT&T are more than happy to announce via Twitter that they will keep to their word and ensure that AT&T-bound Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphones will arrive in-store at the announced date.

Not only that, future buyers who have finally made up their minds to pick up the device, but never really jumped aboard the whole pre-order bandwagon, would be reassured to hear that the Galaxy S4 will also be in-stock this coming April 27th as promised. It would be interesting to see how AT&T’s first mover advantage in this aspect would boost their bottom line this coming quarter.
