On Gay Marriage In Churches, Stances Vary Among Religions, Clergy, Members

Though the Supreme Court has declared the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional and invalidated California’s gay marriage ban, marriage remains a complicated and contested issue among religious denominations.

Nationwide, supporters and opponents of same-sex marriage rights announced plans following the rulings Wednesday for prayer meetings and other gatherings, including an event supporting same-sex marriage on Wednesday in the Washington National Cathedral.

“We are ringing our bells at the cathedral to celebrate the extension of federal marriage equality to all the same-sex couples modeling God’s love in lifelong covenants,” said the Episcopal church’s Rev. Gary Hall. “Our prayers for continued happiness are with them and with all couples who will be joined in matrimony in the years to come.”

John Boehner, Republicans Show No Signs Of Fixing Voting Rights Act

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court left the fate of a key part of the Voting Rights Act in the hands of Congress on Tuesday, but GOP leaders on up to the most powerful Republican in the nation, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), don’t seem in much of a rush to take up that responsibility.

Nearly every Republican interviewed by The Huffington Post in the wake of the Supreme Court decision either had no answer about how they would respond, or said they hadn’t read it yet. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) said he favored the ruling that invalidated Section 4 of the law, which set the standards for which jurisdictions had to get federal approval before changing voting rules.

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) told HuffPost he could not imagine Congress coming to terms on a new set of standards, although the Supreme Court expressly ruled that such standards would be constitutional as long as they are updated to reflect changes in the country since 1965.

DOMA: Supreme Court Rulings On Defense Of Marriage Act, Prop 8 Irk Haters

Anti-gay groups were immediately up in arms after the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) as unconstitutional. They argued that this decision will change life in the United States for the worse and that “God’s judgment” will be upon us.

American Family Association spokespeople Fred Jackson and Sandy Rios expressed dismay over the DOMA strike-down, Right Wing Watch notes. Rios said the phrase “DOMA’s dead” is “metaphorical” because “marriage is dead, too.”

“Not a good day,” Jackson said, adding, “There is no question that as a country, as a country, if God’s judgment has not been upon us before this, God’s judgment will be.”

Microsoft Adds 3D Printing Support To Windows 8.1 For Developers, Replicator 2 Coming To MS Stores

makerbot-factory2

Microsoft is doing its bit to help push forward the 3D printing revolution, by adding in native 3D printer support in Windows 8.1. A new API will let developers on its platform put 3D printing capabilities right into their apps, so that you’ll be able to print that elegant ashtray you’re modelling right on the spot. The API will help consumers using devices including those from Makerbot and Form Labs create their own stuff even more easily at home.

This is great news for the prospects of 3D printing becoming a mainstream thing, instead of just an enthusiast’s hobby. And Microsoft is clearly interested in attracting developers who are interested in 3D printing to the Windows software ecosystem. Whether that’s just a way for it to look ‘hip, cool and cutting edge,’ or a genuine big bet on the future of the tech remains to be seen, but at least it’s there to be taken advantage of.

Microsoft support along with the merger of Makerbot with Stratasys means there’s a lot of energy going into mainstreaming home 3D printing tech right now, from some of the largest players in the space. That doesn’t mean we’ll all be printing our own phones at home in two years’ time, but it does mean we’ll probably see a lot more investment focused on this area in the near future.

Microsoft’s Antoine Leblond called printing 3D “just as easy and seamless as printing in 2D” on stage today at Build, and demoed the process of printing a vase from a Windows 8.1 device to the MakerBot Replicator 2. The Replicator 2 will be available in Microsoft Stores soon, too, according to Leblond.
