Apple details iOS 7’s improved business credentials

Apple details iOS 7's improved business credentials

While iOS already has a place in the corporate world, that spot isn’t guaranteed when there’s competition with both a renewed BlackBerry and Samsung’s Knox. Accordingly, Apple isn’t leaving anything to chance: it just posted a page explaining the business-friendly iOS 7 features that it teased at WWDC. The biggest improvements for end users may be enterprise single sign-on and per app VPN, both of which will save hassles when launching work apps. IT managers should have it easier as well — iOS devices can join Mobile Device Management as soon as they’re activated, and a company can assign apps to individual users without losing control. There’s considerably more features than we can list here, but it’s clear from a cursory glimpse that Apple likes its foothold in the enterprise.

WearIT brings its prototype smart watch to CE Week, we go eyes-on

WearIT brings its prototype smart watch to CE Week, we go eyeson

It’d be hard to go hands-on with the WearIT smart watch given that it’s still very much a prototype and its touchscreen is … well, it’s not enabled yet. But we did get a chance to put our hands to the device and snap a gaggle of pictures, highlighting its 1.54-inch capacitive touchscreen and trio of buttons (each of which will correspond to specific applications, we’re told). The concept with WearIT’s watch is that it’s a standalone device — “We’re getting closer to Dick Tracy every day,” a company rep told us. While the device isn’t quite up to Tracy’s standards (no phone functionality, for instance), it assuredly packs more power than the aging detective’s wrist gadget.

A Cortex A8 600 MHz CPU and 256MB of RAM are at the heart of the smart watch, backed up by a 550 mAh lithium ion rechargeable battery. 4GB of storage is embedded inside, along with 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth / Bluetooth LE, ANT+, and a USB 2.0 port (when using the charging clip, included with the watch). Oh, and it runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, though it’s pared down considerably for the screen size. We’ll have a much closer look at WearIT’s smart watch later this year — the device is expected to arrive in the US starting in November and will retail for $400.

Sony's new RX100MII and RX1R highend pointandshoot cameras leaked in press shots

Sony’s rumored to be unveiling two new point-and-shoots later this month, but a pair of leaked press shots at least spoil how both cameras are going to look. First up, the RX100MII, rumored to pack an updated 20-megapixel sensor and Zeiss lens as well as tilt-screen and WiFi connectivity, has a relatively simple face dominated by that aforementioned Carl Zeiss glass. Meanwhile, the RX1R, a refresh of Sony’s full-frame RX1, arrives with a new focus settings dial and hot-shoe fitting all visible in its initial press shot reveal. We’re sure Sony will fill us in on all the remaining details soon.

This Solar Satellite Will Shed Light on the Inner Workings of the Sun

This Solar Satellite Will Shed Light on the Inner Workings of the Sun

The Sun actually gets hotter as you travel away from its surface, jumping from 6,000 K there to over 1,000,000 K a few million kilometers above in the corona. This effect contributes to solar flares that can damage earthbound electronics and we have no idea how it does this. But NASA is about to find out thanks to the IRIS (Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph) spacecraft that just launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base today.
