Muslims In Myanmar: Trapped In Ghetto After Clashes

SITTWE, Myanmar — From inside the neighborhood that has become their prison, they can look over the walls and fences and into a living city.

Stores are open out there. Sidewalk restaurants are serving bottles of Mandalay beer. There are no barbed-wire roadblocks marking neighborhood boundaries, no armed policemen guarding checkpoints. In the rest of Sittwe, this city of 200,000 people along Myanmar’s coast, no one pays a bribe to take a sick baby to the doctor.

Absurd Stock Photos Made The First Silicon Alley Billionaire

Photos of garbage or (fully clothed) people posing with fruit are big business. Stock photo sites, which provide images for news organizations, blogs, corporate campaigns and all manner of low-budget advertising, have been growing for years. And Shutterstock, founded in 2003 by Jonathan Oringer, has expanded from hosting 30,000 of Oringer’s own photos to distributing about 28 million licensed photos/illustrations/videos. And all those cats riding merry-go-rounds have made Oringer a billionaire.

Chuck Schumer: House Will Pass Senate Immigration Bill

WASHINGTON — Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) predicted on Sunday that the House would pass the Senate’s immigration bill, despite Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) repeated insistence that his chamber would pass a reform bill of its own.

“By the end of this year, the House will pass the Senate bill,” Schumer said on Fox News Sunday.

Boehner has consistently stressed his plan to stick to the so-called “Hastert rule,” which would require support of a majority of his own party caucus, in order to pass immigration. That could produce a much harsher bill than the Senate’s legislation.

End Of The World? Science Artist Ron Miller Envisions Apocalypse Scenarios (PHOTOS)

How will the world end? We dodged the 2012 doomsday predicted by the Mayan calendar, but scientists have provided several possible scenarios for the world’s demise. Hollywood has its own set of ideas, from zombies to giant earthquakes to alien invasions.

According to Ron Miller, former art director for the Albert Einstein Planetarium at the National Air & Space Museum in Washington D.C., it’s not just earth’s destruction we have to worry about. He told The Huffington Post in an email:

From the end of civilization we go to the end of human life on Earth, then to the end of life of any kind, then to the destruction of the planet itself. But it can get even worse than that. After the Earth is gone, the solar system itself will eventually be destroyed, the sun will become a dark, cold cinder and, after many billions of years, will come the heat death of the entire universe.
