IRL: BlackBerry Q10 and the Chevy Volt

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we’re using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

Fun fact: IRL was inspired by long-term car reviews — the sort of detailed write-ups you can’t expect after just a week of testing. Appropriately enough, then, we’ve got some impressions of the Chevy Volt from Engadget Spanish editor Jose Andrade, who’s already on his second model. Meanwhile, you’ll also find some thoughts on the BlackBerry Q10 from who else but Canadian editor Jon Fingas.

Innovative Woman Uses Toilet Plunger On Tokyo Subway In Hilarious (Or Gross) Lifehack

We can’t decide if this picture is super awesome or super concerning; it all hinges on where that plunger’s previously been.

This viral picture of a woman apparently using a toilet plunger to keep her balance on a Tokyo subway car is either a brilliant lifehack or a rather disgusting display of laziness. According to Rocket News 24, reaction to the straphanger on Japanese social media has been mixed, with some applauding her innovation and others worrying about what she might be transferring to the ceiling.

However, Gothamist, a New York blog that has seen its share of poop on subways, writes that perhaps “we can all learn something from this young woman, who re-contextualized her toilet plunger and put it to far better use in a Tokyo subway car.”

Smithsonian Folklife Festival Gets Back To Its Roots

WASHINGTON — African-American style and identity, endangered languages and Hungarian culture get the spotlight treatment at this year’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival, which starts Wednesday on the National Mall.

This year’s festival includes an app to help visitors navigate the dozens of daily discussions, hands-on activities, cooking demonstrations and concerts.

Criticized in recent years for focusing too much on American culture — in particular, U.S. government agencies (including the Smithsonian itself) — the 2013 festival includes a blend of domestic and international issues.

Sherri Shepherd’s Impression Of Two Women Trash-Talking Each Other (VIDEO)

Sherri Shepherd got very animated on Monday’s “The View” while impersonating two women “trash talking” each other.

(Credit: Flipside)

With game controller support headed to iOS 7 in just a few months, the lineup of third-party hardware is already starting to take shape.

The latest: the Flipside, an iPhone case that can expand out to add buttons and controls for games. It’s also got solar cells that can recharge the case itself.

If this looks and sounds familiar, it’s because the same product was pitched on Kickstarter in December though was halted before it could be completed. Nonetheless it raised a little more than $8,000 of its $135,000 funding goal. Things are different this time, says creator Justice Frangipane.

“We have gotten a few investors since our Kickstarter launch and are in a better place to move forwards,” Frangipane said. “We also hired an ex-military (colonel) who is doing the electronics, who is simply amazing.”

The result is a redesign that adds a larger solar cell to recharge the case, as well as slightly larger control pads.

What hasn’t changed is that the hybrid case still us… [Read more]
