Taliban Office In Qatar Explanation Sought By Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghanistan’s government reaffirmed support Sunday for possible talks with its Taliban foes, but demanded full explanations on how the group was allowed to raise its flag in Qatar and display other symbols that have stalled the U.S.-led effort.

The ongoing dispute over the Taliban compound in Doha – which the Afghan government said appeared as something akin to an embassy in exile instead of just a political outpost when it opened – underscore the extreme difficulties in just trying to launch dialogue after nearly 12 years of war in Afghanistan.

Demi Lovato’s Father Dead: Singer’s Biological Dad, From Whom She Was Estranged, Passes Away

Demi Lovato’s biological father, Patrick, has passed.

The 20-year-old singer has been estranged from her father since 2007, after he and her mother Dianna split in 1994. According to Us Weekly, Lovato Sr. battled cancer in recent years and had tried reaching out to his famous daughter, saying “It is not like I want anything from her, all I want is her love.”

The “X Factor” judge hasn’t commented yet on the passing of her father, but her older sister tweeted the sad news yesterday afternoon, writing:

Plants ‘Do Math’ To Ensure Steady Food Supply, New Research Shows

LONDON (Reuters) – Plants do complex arithmetic calculations to make sure they have enough food to get them through the night, new research published in journal eLife shows.

Scientists at Britain’s John Innes Centre said plants adjust their rate of starch consumption to prevent starvation during the night when they are unable to feed themselves with energy from the sun.

They can even compensate for an unexpected early night.

“This is the first concrete example in a fundamental biological process of such a sophisticated arithmetic calculation,” mathematical modeler Martin Howard of John Innes Centre (JIC) said.

During the night, mechanisms inside the leaf measure the size of the starch store and estimate the length of time until dawn. Information about time comes from an internal clock, similar to the human body clock.

“The capacity to perform arithmetic calculation is vital for plant growth and productivity,” JIC metabolic biologist Alison Smith said.

“Understanding how plants continue to grow in the dark could help unlock new ways to boost crop yield.”

The Midnight Clock Secret Bookcase: The Reader’s Riddle

No other art form transacts with us the way literature can. It’s very accessible yet it demands and invites us to add depth to the world and the ideas it conjures. Devin Montgomery tries to capture the joy of discovery and exploration that we get from reading with his unique invention. He calls it the Midnight Clock. It’s a functional timepiece, but it also has a secret. If you follow the riddle engraved on its body, you’ll find a hidden book compartment.

the midnight clock hidden bookcase by devin montgomery

The Midnight Clock is made from either birch of bamboo, with a shatterproof acrylic cover and a quartz movement. To reveal the hidden compartment, you have to remove four pegs along with the acrylic cover in the right order. Naturally, you’ll need to decipher the riddle to find out the right order. It’s not hard to solve, but that’s not really the point of the clock.

Pledge at least $85 (USD) on Kickstarter to get a Midnight Clock as a reward. Naturally once you solve the riddle the Midnight Clock’s magic is drained, but I prefer to think of it as a functional and very creative gift wrap. I think it’s a good way of foreshadowing the wonders that await the recipient in the gift itself.

I do find it somewhat of a missed opportunity though. I think that art is man’s attempt to express that which cannot otherwise be shared using words. Which is why I find the writer a very funny and also valiant class of artist: he uses the very thing that he hopes to transcend. It’s like a vaccine, not because it cures something but because of the audacity of its composition. So wouldn’t it be funny if instead of a clock, you had a book that, when read in a certain way, opens up to reveal another book?

Fruits And Vegetables Are More Aware Than You Think

Fruits And Vegetables Are More Aware Than You Think

You might not think that spinach knows what’s up, but the produce in your fridge is still alive and aware. Which is creepy. But kind of awesome. According to new research, fruits and vegetables still have circadian rhythms up to a week after being harvested. And they respond to light patterns by producing chemical compounds to protect themselves against herbivores.

Vertu TI now available in red or blue limited editions, only 1,000 of each made

Vertu TI now available in red or blue limited editions, only 1,000 of each made

It’s been almost half a year since Vertu launched its first-ever Android phone, the TI, and now the company’s decided to throw in a couple of limited editions to lure the big spenders. As pictured above, the new Vertu TI Colours collection is wrapped in either “Sunset Red” or “Midnight Blue” calf leather, and only 1,000 units are made for each color. As per typical Vertu style, there’s a unique number etched on the back to indicate which of the 1,000 units yours is.

The rest of this hand-crafted, matt grey titanium phone remains unchanged otherwise, namely its 3.7-inch tough sapphire screen, Android 4.0, 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4, 64GB storage plus an 8-megapixel camera. And of course, the phone still comes with the famed Vertu Concierge, a “100 percent independent” service that CEO Perry Oosting is very proud of. To join this exclusive club, you’ll have to somehow fork out a whopping HK$90,000 or €8,900 (about US$11,700) — just a tad more expensive than the TI Titanium Pure Black edition, but also more flamboyant. This author already spotted these new phones at Vertu’s Hong Kong Airport store, and he’s currently accepting donations.

TARDIS Prime Transformer Toy: Phone Booth in Disguise

Remember Jason Casteel’s cool Transfomers-meets-Doctor Who T-shirt? Thingiverse member Andrew Lindsey not only remembers it, he was inspired by it to make a 3D printed toy. Behold, TARDIS Prime in 3D! Vworp Vworp!

Andrew had to deviate from Jason’s drawing in order to make the toy transformable from a phone booth to a robot and vice-versa. At least he still has the red bow tie.

Andrew says he’s not fully satisfied with the toy. For one thing, the toy needs a lot of plastic to be printed, and it’s made of more than 70 parts. Also, it can’t stand on its own because it’s too top-heavy. I guess you could say that it’s… wibbly wobbly. YEEEEAA– Sorry. Andrew is thinking of designing a smaller version of the toy, but you can already print G1 TARDIS Prime if you want. Just download the files from Andrew’s Thingiverse page.

Position These Lamps To Shine A Light On Corruption, Or Just Anything

Some spaces are awkward. Dark corners or cavernous closets that could really use some light. And tap lights don’t always cut it in terms of brightness or aesthetic quality. But Australian designer Flynn Talbot is working on the situation. His aluminum and steel lights, called Latitude, can go anywhere and point in any direction.
