Today we walk through metal detectors to get into courthouses, airports, and even concert venues. But back in the 1920s the first walk-through metal detectors weren’t invented for finding weapons (or nail clippers), they were invented for searching would-be thieves.

Addax Calf Brookfield Zoo: Chicago-Area Zoo Welcomes Its Newest Arrival (PHOTOS)

The pitter patter of little hooves can now be heard at the Chicago-area Brookfield Zoo thanks to the arrival of an addax antelope calf.

The zoo announced Thursday that a male addax calf was born on June 7 to mama Sara, 4, and 11-year-old father Winston. Its precious, already-visible horn buds are expected to already grow into horns in the coming weeks.

According to the zoo, addax are a critically endangered species on the brink of extinction — almost 200 live in accredited zoos across North America, while only about 300 more live in the wild, mostly in Niger. The addax have been hunted excessively of its horns, flesh and hide, contributing to the species’ decline.

Samsung intros HomeSync Lite: a personal cloud, hosted from your PC

Samsung intros HomeSync Lite a personal cloud, hosted from your PC

Alongside the new PCs that Samsung announced today, the company has also introduced HomeSync Lite, a software solution that allows users to use their computers — rather than an external device — for personal cloud storage. As Samsung sees it, the key benefit exists with the ability to backup and access multimedia content from any Samsung device, all without any fees. Since the software also supports external drives, users can store and retrieve gobs of pictures, videos, music and documents while on the go. HomeSync Lite supports up to five Samsung accounts, and works with up to six Samsung devices per account. Thankfully, the software also supports personal folders, which allows individuals to keep private documents from the rest of their family. Naturally, the software appeals best to families of Samsung devotees, but if you’re among that bunch, go ahead and take a peek at what’s in store.

I-94 Expansion: Controversial SEMCOG Vote Would Widen Freeway Through Detroit, Southeast MIchigan

A proposed freeway widening that would cut through Detroit’s most up-and-coming neighborhood has residents and transit activists howling for alternatives.

SEMCOG, a regional governance board encompassing seven counties across Southeast Michigan, met Thursday afternoon to approve the 2040 Regional Transportation Plan. That vision will ultimately allocate $36 billion in funds over 25 years to the area’s roads, freeways, highways, buses and proposed light rail, including extensive work on I-94 and I-75.

But particular controversy has emerged over one aspect of the plan, which would widen the I-94 freeway by one lane in each direction, along with adding a network of service lanes on either side. Plans also call for removing many of the aging pedestrian and auto bridges stretching across its width, some that wouldn’t be replaced.
