At last weekend’s Brickworld 2013 in Chicago, one Lego build stood out above all else, a 3D diorama that showcased virtually every major scene from 1939’s The Wizard of Oz. The detail is incredible—and it features a tornado!

It’s not too difficult to figure out what’s going on: it’s their birthday, and they’re all happy because they’re about to get presents. What if they knew that you had totally spaced on the fact that they were celebrating the anniversary of their birth? Fortunately, there are plenty of services that will remind you of friends’ and family members’ DOBs, and Amazon is now joining their ranks with a Facebook-integrated program called Birthday Gift. The idea is simple: you can order an Amazon gift card for a Facebook friend ahead of time, and the company will make sure it gets delivered on their momentous day. What’s more, you can also send invites to mutual friends to see if they want to pitch in a few bucks. This way, nobody feels terribly cheap for plunking down a couple dollars, and you won’t settle for the standard Wall post birthday wish. Check out the video below to see how it all works.

When I was a kid, there was no image more closely associated with surveillance than the CCTV camera. Big Brother is watching, we were warned. The government is keeping tabs on you with video cameras on every street corner. Soon they may even install cameras in your home, they insisted. Honestly, that may have been preferable to what we ended up getting.

British architect Richard Rogers is known for putting the guts of buildings on display. In fact, his work has even inspired the scatological style known as Bowellism. This summer, Rogers’ exoskeletal style is being writ large in London, where he’s building a wedge-shaped tower called the Leadenhall Building. And lucky for us, the construction process is being filmed in high-def.
