This Week On The TechCrunch Gadgets Podcast: Bye Bye BlackBerry And Vanilla Android On The HTC One/GS4

3OOEDef

BlackBerry is “circling the toilet,” as Chris Velazco puts it so eloquently. Meanwhile, Google is now offering stock Android versions of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4. We’re also mildly interested in Hyundai’s new infotainment system, Blue Link, (especially given Apple’s foray into the car with iOS 7).

Just as you’d expect on this lovely summer Friday, we discuss all this and more during this week’s TechCrunch Gadgets Podcast.

This week’s conversation features John Biggs, Jordan Crook, Chris Velazco, Natasha Lomas, and a dash of Darrell Etherington.

Enjoy!

We invite you to enjoy our weekly podcasts every Friday at 3pm Eastern and noon Pacific.

Motion Tennis Uses iOS Device as Motion Controller: iii Sports

There are lots of articles online speculating about how Apple can create an instant game console by increasing the integration between the Apple TV and iOS devices. It’s an interesting idea, but so far we’ve seen that Apple is slow to embrace its gaming community. iOS game developer Rolocule Games took matters into its own hands and came up with… Wii Sports. Or one of the games in Wii Sports.

Using AirPlay, the Apple TV can mirror your iOS device’s display on your TV or monitor to let you play on a bigger screen. But Rolocule Games went a step further. Aside from letting you play on a big screen, its app Motion Tennis lets you use your iOS device itself as the motion controller. You get the idea: Swing your iOS device and your avatar swings his racket. Swing your device hard and you just might end up with a costly accident.

Motion Tennis is already available on the iTunes App Store for $8 (USD). You need to have an Apple TV as well as a fairly modern iOS device to make it work, but I can wholeheartedly recommend the game… if you’re trapped in 2006.

Still, it’s a glimpse at what a powerful “mobile console” could be like. Imagine if the next PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo (or Google or Apple) game system was just that: a small device. A console, controller, secondary display, media center, digital store and game library in your pocket. And you can make calls with it too! Wouldn’t that be awesome?

I’m not sure how long it would take or if we’d ever get such a device. Then again, if you told me five years ago that I’d be able to play Final Fantasy Tactics, Baldur’s Gate, a digital version of Magic: The Gathering and a new XCOM game in one portable device I wouldn’t have believed you either.

Why Going To College Is A Valuable Investment In 1 Chart

It’s rough out there for recent college grads — but that doesn’t make pursuing a degree a bad idea.

The jobless rate for Americans overall, which includes those with and without a college degree, is higher than for those with at least a bachelor’s, according to a report released Thursday by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. When you break out those with higher education from the general worker population, the benefit becomes clear, as this chart from the bank illustrates:

GoAir Flight Attendants: Airline To Employ Only Lightweight Female Flight Attendants

Indian airline GoAir is–apparently–doing everything in its power to lighten its aircraft and improve fuel efficiency.

Like (who else?) Ryanair before it, the airline has decided to only hire lightweight female flight attendants in the future, since males are–in general–heavier. Taking a page right out of Ryanair’s playbook, the airline will also reduce the size of the in-flight magazine and the amount of water in their fleet’s water tanks.

The airline currently employs about 130 male flight attendants, who will not be dismissed. Yet over the next seven years, GoAir plans to induct about 80 aircraft, and the expected 2,000 future cabin recruits will be female only.

Mike Patterson, Georgia Dad Paralyzed After Saving Drowning Girl, Dies (HOW TO HELP)

A Georgia dad who was paralyzed after saving a drowning girl passed away on Friday.

While hanging out at a lake in Rockmart, Ga., with his son on June 8, Mike Patterson noticed a 4-year-old struggling to stay afloat and dove in to help. The heroic dad’s spinal cord was severed in the process and he died on Friday, with his family by his side, after suffering from a number of medical complications, according to a statement released by his family.

“His life and the lives of others are forever changed by his courageous, split-second decision to save another’s life,” Patterson’s family wrote in a statement.

Eric Cantor Concerned Immigration Reform Push Might Force House Members To Do Things Like ‘Read Words’

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) tells Yahoo! News’ Chris Moody he’s concerned that the Senate’s passage of a comprehensive immigration reform bill might put him in the position of having to read some words that are published in the English language. And there might be no end to the widespread need for members of Congress to do the same:

“I can’t tell you what’s in that big Senate bill, and the well over 1,000 or 1,500 pages that it may be, and that’s my concern…I don’t know if you could ask a lot of the senators what’s in that bill. And that’s my concern.”

As always, I’ll point out that back when various members of the House were kvetching about how they had to read the House Health Care Reform bill, the folks over at Computational Legal Studies noted that “those versed in the typesetting practices of the United States Congress know that the printed version of a bill contains a significant amount of whitespace including non-trivial space between lines, large headers and margins, an embedded table of contents, and large font.” Consequently, a mere page count “vastly overstates the actual length of [the] bill.” CLS went on to note that the House Health Care Reform Bill had 363,086 words. By contrast, “Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix” contained 257,000 words.

‘I Defied The Odds’

This is a teen-written article from our friends at Teenink.com.

I can’t complain. I can’t complain because I’m alive and walking, and that’s more than was expected, honestly.

There’s something strange about being a sixteen-year-old stroke survivor. I had the stroke when I was three weeks old, so people seem to think that it would have little bearing on my life now. And honestly, even the title “stroke survivor” feels weird to me. I don’t remember being anything but the kid who had a stroke, so is there really a stroke-survivor title, or is that just a part of me?
