White House Threatens To Veto Anti-Abortion Bill

The White House issued a statement on Monday threatening to veto a House bill that would ban abortions in the United States after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

“Forty years ago, the Supreme Court affirmed a woman’s constitutional right to privacy, including the right to choose,” the administration said. “This bill is a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade and shows contempt for women’s health and rights, the role doctors play in their patients’ health care decisions, and the Constitution.”

An all-male group of Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee earlier this month approved the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which bans abortions 20 weeks after fertilization unless the woman’s life is in danger. Republicans rejected several amendments that would have added in exceptions for rape, incest, and health of the mother after Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) argued that “the incidence of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low.”

Bossless Office? Companies Experiment With Non-Hierarchical Workplaces (VIDEO)

Could you imagine a workplace where nobody’s in charge, you don’t work your way up from a cubicle to the corner office, and employees vote on who gets promoted? The non-hierarchical “bossless office” is the new norm at several corporations hoping to create workplaces where their employees can be happier and more creative.

This (perhaps idealistic) vision of a “flexible workplace” is being put to the test at software design and development company Menlo Innovations in Ann Arbor, Mich., the subject of a recent New York Magazine feature by Matthew Shaer, “The Boss Stops Here.”

“My impression was that people are happier, from what I could find, and the teams did move fluidly,” Shaer told HuffPost Live.

Astronaut Wives Dish On What It’s Like Being Married To An Astronaut (VIDEO)

Astronaut wives were the “American royalty” of the 1960s, catapulted into the spotlight by their husbands, the Mercury Seven — NASA’s first astronauts.

But though they were seen smiling on the cover of “Life” magazine and drinking tea with Jackie Kennedy, things weren’t always so peachy at home, says author Lily Koppel, who stopped by HuffPost Live on Monday to dish on her new book, The Astronaut Wives Club.

“There was very much a credo that the woman [I interviewed] have shared with me that was if you don’t have a happy marriage, your husband is not going to have a space flight,” she said. “So even when things weren’t picture perfect at home, they had to look picture perfect on the cover of ‘Life.'”

Frank Luntz, GOP Strategist, Shows Off His Collectible-Filled California Home (PHOTOS)

From the outside, GOP strategist Frank Luntz’s house in Brentwood, California is quite modest. But when Los Angeles Magazine shared photos of the home’s interiors, we were surprised to say the least.

For one thing, the political consultant has filled his rooms with collectibles and treasures from famous moments in history, entertainment and sports. Some of his most-prized possessions include a Winston Churchill statue and a billiard table once owned by Ulysses S. Grant. He explained that these items are representative of people “who did the right thing at great personal expense,” he says. “These are the guys who represented courage in times of crisis, and I wanted to be surrounded by them.”

When guests visit his home there’s never a lack of things to do (besides from taking in all of the collections, of course.) His property includes a pool with fountains, a basketball court and a movie theater that transforms into a bowling alley. No wonder Luntz isn’t even sure how may square feet his home covers.

Honest Toddler Can’t Be The First Person To Confuse A Spider Web For Cotton Candy. Calm Down.

Honest Toddler fans got exciting news last week when it was announced that the tot had inspired an idea for a TV show. Darren Star, of “Sex and the City” fame, is developing a series based on “The Honest Toddler: A Child’s Guide to Parenting” by Bunmi Laditan, the hilarious mom behind our favorite fictional Twitter feed.

We hope the show works out and will certainly tune in, but because we won’t get to see this “‘Modern Family’ from a toddler’s point of view” for a while (assuming it gets picked up), we’re going to keep laughing at HT’s tweets in the meantime. In the past month alone, he’s discussed sharing, cotton candy and Father’s Day, among other things.

Lego makes beautiful music with the Sydney Opera House

(Credit: Lego)

We’ve seen an official Lego Sydney Opera House set before as part of the toy company’s Architecture range, but let’s be honest: an awful lot of detail got lost in the model’s tiny size.

Lego’s about to do something about that, though. On September 1, Lego fanatics will be able to get their hands on an insanely detailed 2,989-piece model of the iconic building designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon in the 1950s. And, at 11 inches by 25 inches by 15 inches, it’s going to be huge.

The model is offering a few neat perks for Lego brick collectors: rare dark-tan Lego bricks, tiles, and sloped bricks, as well as the company’s first-ever 48×48 stud baseplate in blue — and the curved white pieces that form the Opera House’s sails.

Jonathan Adler And Simon Doonan’s Shelter Island, NY Home Is A Botanical Wonder (PHOTOS)

We have to admit, when we first saw what Jonathan Adler and Simon Doonan’s Shelter Island, NY home looked like when they bought it, we were shocked. But after checking out the “before” and “after” photos on Gardenista, it was evident that the grounds were originally sad looking and undernourished. But knowing how chic and stylish this design duo is, we knew they would never have kept it like that for long.

The two hired Vickie Cardaro of Buttercup Design Group who created a relaxing outdoor space complete with stunning plants, flowers and soothing accessories. Their serene pool, for example, is surrounded by Elijah Blue fescue on one side, and a cool cabana on the other. The rest of the property has a more exotic vibe with crushed shells as driveway gravel, pine-needle mulch and Alluaudia cactus from Madagascar.

We have to give these two props for really creating a space that’s one-of-a-kind, but of course now we’re wondering: Can we come over for a game of ping pong?
