We must arouse ourselves from the pleasant dream that everything is, basically, alright. We must disabuse ourselves of the fallacy that as long as we don’t see stormtroopers in the streets our freedoms must still be intact.

Joe Doucet’s circular mirror isn’t water-logged for nothing. He designed it as a reminder of the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy in lower Manhattan (where his studio is) and generally on the east coast.
We already know about Microsoft’s impending Windows 8 overhaul, but previews of app specific updates have been few and far between. Now, thanks to an apparent Windows Store update on leaked builds, we’re starting to see what kind of updates we can expect. In addition to updates for the news, weather, travel, finance and sports apps (see the video after the break), images are leaking for the OS’ new calculator application, sound recorder, Movie Moments and an Xbox Music redesign. It’s hard to judge these tweaks without actually handling the update ourselves, but we’ll say it again for good measure: we may have to review Windows 8 all over again.

When was the last time you heard someone use that old aphorism, “The perfect is the enemy of the good”? On its face, this sounds like sage advice. At the same time, I think there is a danger in this approach.

Reasonable people would agree that a bank having a history of involvement with fraud and mismanagement (and recipient of one of the largest bank bailouts) shouldn’t be writing bank legislation. Unless, of course, you are the U.S. Congress doing business as usual.

The Buffalo Zoo is now home to a fluffy newborn southern tamandua.
Otis was born on April 7 to parents Olive and Brutus, who were imported to the zoo last August as part of a program to expand North American populations, Zooborns reports. Tamanduas, also called collared anteaters, are fairly common throughout South America and eat a diet of ants and termite using a long, sticky tongue.
Take a look at a few photos of the adorable newborn below.

We’ve all been caught with our hand in the cookie jar, so to speak. But that magical facial response produced at the exact moment of discovery is one of the best reactions out there, and this chipmunk is no exception.
The photo was uploaded by a Reddit user who said they caught the little fella with his mouth full of peanuts in their backyard (as well as this equally wonderful follow-up image).

There’s been a lot of talk about the NSA and its data-gathering policies. The news sounds kind of scary. But you might be thinking that the NSA can’t have literally every foreign and domestic call made in the U.S.. That would be a crazy amount of data right? Well, yes it would be, and it kind of seems like they have it. Or at least could afford to keep it if they wanted to.
Apple may consider the iPhone to be a gaming device, but even it’s willing to admit that traditional gaming demands a proper gamepad. The folks at Logitech apparently agree, and seem to be preparing to release an iPhone 5-compatible device with its G-prefix branding. An image acquired by Kotaku shows a four-button Logitech gamepad built around an iPhone-shaped hole. There’s a Lightning connector on the right side, indicating a hard-wired (or at least device-powered) peripheral. According to Kotaku, this will be just one of several third-party gamepads designed for iOS 7’s Game Center overhaul. Of course, this blurry image should be regarded with a healthy dose of skepticism, but we certainly wouldn’t scoff at an officially supported gamepad solution.
