Apple revises warranty policies in France, Germany and Belgium in response to EU law

Apple revised its warranty policy in Italy last year after being hit with a €900,000 fine for not complying with an EU-mandated two-year term, and it looks like those changes are now starting to spread further throughout Europe. The company has today revised the terms of its warranties in France, Germany and Belgium, specifying that customers are entitled to repairs and replacements of their Apple products for a full two years after purchase, and not just one as previously stated. No word yet on when the rest of the EU will see those changes, but it would now seem to be just a matter of time before other countries get the new terms as well.

Don’t Drive and Drive: This PSA Will Scare You into Sobriety

A good PSA leaves a lasting impression and makes the person watching it choose to follow what’s being advised in the announcement. An excellent PSA, on the other hand, manages to do that and go viral as well.

Guess which descriptor best fits this PSA on drunk driving that was made by London’s Department of Transportation.

Anti Drunk Driving PSA

So many people lose their lives because of drunk driving, whether they’re the ones behind the wheel or the ones out in the streets at the wrong place, at the wrong time. To drive the point across that people shouldn’t drink and drive, London’s DOT decided to scare the crap out of a bunch of guys who were using the bathroom at the bar (or should I say pub?) they were in.

As they wash their hands, a bloody mannequin smashes through the window complete with sound effects.

I guess the DOT decided to go the “scare ‘em into sobriety” route – or at least make them never want to wash their hands again. What do you think?

8 Great Gifts for Father’s Day 2013

8 Father's Day Gifts

Father’s Day.  When you get to my father’s age, it becomes quite difficult to find something original as a gift.  Ties, while quite nice, are well-overplayed and no longer an option.  Take him out to lunch?  Sure… but again, not the most original of ideas.  Movies are a good idea… but unless it’s a drafthouse, it’s really not that special.

So what to get for Dad on this Father’s Day?  Well, here are 8 ideas…

Swatch’s $90 Dive Watches Won’t Take You To the Depths Of Poverty

Swatch's $90 Dive Watches Won't Take You To the Depths Of Poverty

If you’re into any kind of serious underwater adventuring, you’ll probably balk at Swatch’s new Scuba Libre line. But at just $90 they’re not targeted at timepiece connoisseurs or wannabe Jacques Cousteaus. They’re designed for an afternoon at the beach where you won’t be too devastated if your watch gets destroyed after an epic tubing run.

Video gamers outperform nongamers in vision test

Quick, what just flashed across the bottom left of your screen?

(Credit: James Martin/CNET)

Ladies and gentlemen, may I now present your deep thought of the day: People who play video games are better at playing video games than people who don’t play video games.

OK, new findings out of Duke may be a bit more complex than that, but there’s not much of a spoiler alert to this one. Hours spent at a gaming console seem to translate directly to a test, taken at a computer, of how the brain tracks visual stimuli, according to a new study at the Duke School of Medicine.

Researchers found 125 participants within a larger visual cognition study who were either “nongamers” (apparently this cohort was in short supply) or “very intensive gamers” (apparently this one was readily available). Each participant had to perform a visual sensory memory task that involved watching a circular arrangement of eight letters flash across a screen for a tenth of a second and being asked after as few as 13 milliseconds and as many as 2.5 seconds to name the letter that appeared in a spot an arrow is pointing to.

Though all players performed worse as time passed, the researchers report in the June issue of the journal Attention, Perception and Psychophysics that … [Read more]

WSJ: Clearwire to endorse Dish’s offer, push back vote on Sprint deal (updated)

Well, it looks like Sprint’s letter to Clearwire Corp. didn’t adequately trash Dish Network. According to The Wall Street Journal, a special committee of Clearwire’s board will push back a shareholder vote on Sprint’s deal this Thursday and recommend that the full board endorse Dish’s buyout proposal. Needless to say, that would put a sizable wrench in Sprint’s plans to fully acquire the spectrum provider. The carrier already owns nearly half of Clearwire, and if Dish gets its way, it will become a major minority shareholder in the company. Whatever happens next, likely won’t end the drawn-out bidding war, though; Sprint has already claimed that Dish’s offer can’t legally be accepted without its consent. As always, stay tuned.

Update: Dish just formally announced the extension of its tender offer to Clearwire, pushing back the original June 28th date to July 2nd. Skip past the break for the full release.
