Catholic Church’s Influence On Gay Marriage Waning

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Frank Ferri made peace with God years ago. He defeated the Roman Catholic Church just last month.

The openly gay state representative led the fight to legalize same-sex marriage in what may be the most Catholic state in the nation’s most Catholic region. And, in early May, Rhode Island became the sixth and final New England state to allow gay couples to marry when its Democratic-dominated Legislature, led by an openly gay House speaker, reversed course after years of the Catholic Church successfully lobbying lawmakers to resist legalization.

Matt Roloff, Star Of ‘Little People, Big World,’ Speaks Out About Harassment, Death Threats

Stardom has never looked so scary to Matt Roloff and his family.

The Roloffs — stars of the reality TV show “Little People, Big World” — are the latest celebrity victims of disturbing online threats and harassing phone calls from an unknown stalker.

The family lives on an Oregon farm, and Matt Roloff told The Huffington Post that some of the threats have been very specific. “They’ve been to the farm. They know it. Is it somebody on our farm? Someone in our own network of people we know, or some random individual? We don’t know who’s up to it, and it’s spooky,” Roloff said.

7 Unusual Places to Retire

Golf courses and ocean views are no longer the only things that draw people to retirement communities. Niche retirement communities now cater to groups of senior citizens who share interests and cultures, ranging from Harley-Davidson enthusiasts to those who desire to go back to college. “Both current retirees and those just arriving, the baby boomers, are seeking more choices and less of the cookie-cutter options of a community located either on a golf course or in an isolated rural location,” says Andrew Carle, founding director of George Mason University’s Senior Housing Administration. Check out these innovative retirement communities:

UN: More Than 1,000 Iraqis Killed In May Violence

BAGHDAD — The United Nations mission to Iraq said Saturday that more than 1,000 people were killed in violence across the country last month – the highest monthly death toll in years.

Violence has increased sharply in Iraq over the past two months, with bombings in civilian areas growing more frequent as fears grow that widespread sectarian conflict may once again break out in the country. The bloodshed has accelerated since a deadly April 23 crackdown by security forces on a Sunni protest in the northern town of Hawija.

The Sheer Trend Continues In This Week’s Dangerous Outfits (PHOTOS)

The stars brought out quite an eclectic mix of risky outfits this week — and there weren’t many successful attempts. The normally put-together Isla Fisher leads the round-up this week with an almost perfect outfit… if it weren’t for her completely translucent sheer top, which exposed her entire bra. Ke$ha actually wore a sheer polka-dot blouse well, but fumbled when she paired it with very small shorts.

Australian model Nicole Trunfio wore one of our favorite cut-out looks so far, and newcomer Lovelyn Enebechi, a “Germany’s Next Top Model” star, showed the other contestants how to wear sheer without exposing everything. But Kylie Jenner flopped when she paired an otherwise flattering crop-top with the wrong bottoms. Lastly, British songstress Eliza Doolittle continues to test our patience with the new side-butt trend.

Click through to see which daring outfits the stars attempted this week. Do you agree with our decisions on who succeeded and who stumbled?”

Linux Mint 15 hits the web, begs for ‘Olivia’ Munn endorsement

Linux Mint 15 hits the web, begs for 'Olivia' Munn endorsement

As with previous releases, the newest Mint iteration, “Olivia,” comes in two distinct flavors: Cinnamon and MATE. While both have received a bit of polish, it’s the fresher Cinnamon that has gotten the most attention. Version 1.8 of the desktop environment has received plenty of bug fixes, along with a new dedicated settings panel that bypasses the GNOME control center. Support for “Desklets” (read: widgets) has also been added and the log-in screen is completely customizable through HTML5. Both versions benefit from the addition of MintSources, for managing software repositories, and MintDrivers, for managing drivers, obviously. While they’ll come in handy for consumers, the biggest advantage is that IT managers may now be more accepting of the refreshingly green Ubuntu derivative. The developers are calling version 15 their most ambitious release yet, and while we’re not completely convinced that’s true, it’s certainly a significant upgrade over November’s Nadia. You’ll find the full changelog and download links at the source.

Joan Rivers Gets Patriotic And More Tweets Of The Week (PHOTOS)

It’s always fun when stars riff on themselves. Case in point: Joan Rivers posted a picture on Tuesday of herself wearing a pretty hilarious American flag shawl. The harsh “Fashion Police” host said she was “feeling very patriotic this weekend” and joked that she wore the getup for three days straight.

As always, Michael Carl of Vanity Fair made our list — this time, twice! President Obama tweeted a pretty awesome picture of Justin Timberlake and him looking very dapper, Carrie Brownstein made us laugh at her text conversation with a friend and Victoria Beckham posted a funny picture blocking out her face and admits to wearing the same thing twice.
