Michigan Pot Farmer Edwin Schmieding’s Probation Draws Ire From State Police

DETROIT — Probation for a southeastern Michigan farmer caught growing more than 8,000 marijuana plants is not “logical or reasonable” and sends the wrong message to people considering similar schemes, the head of an anti-drug task force said Wednesday.

Detective Lt. Robert Sinclair of the state police reacted a day later to the sentencing of Edwin Schmieding, who got an extraordinary break from a federal judge in Detroit.

John Oliver Applauds Wendy Davis Filibuster, Slams Texas Republicans For ‘One Of The Shadiest Moves Of All Time’ (VIDEO)

On Wednesday, after first celebrating the demise of DOMA, John Oliver then took some time to applaud the epic filibuster of Texas Senator Wendy Davis. Oliver explained, “I don’t know if you watched our show last night. If you did, big mistake. You should not have done that. Why? Because you missed something incredible happening in the Texas State Senate.”

After taking us through the superhuman feat that was Davis’ effort – and suggesting that a sneaker endorsement might be in her future – Oliver took some swipes at Texas Republicans who tried to push the vote through anyway despite running out of time. Calling their attempt to subvert the rules “one of the shadiest moves of all time,” Oliver at least credited the opposition’s with being consistent.

“They simply believe that if late one night when you’re swept away by your emotions you make a stupid mistake, you should always have a chance to fix it later and not have to live with the consequences.”

How Glenn Greenwald Became Glenn Greenwald

Before Glenn Greenwald was the journalist who broke and defended the most important story of 2013, he was many other things: an underage South Florida politician, a lawyer at a high-powered corporate firm, Kips Bay’s most combative tenant, and even the legal arm of his business partner’s gay porn distribution company.

How DOMA Ruling Affects Florida: ‘We Still Have Quite A Bit To Fight For Here’

The U.S. Supreme Court delivered historic rulings advancing same-sex marriage on Wednesday, but they won’t send couples shopping for rings, cakes and flowers for weddings in the Sunshine State.

For gays and lesbians in Florida who hope to marry, the law is unchanged, with a ban on same-sex marriage enshrined in the state Constitution. And gay couples who married in states where it’s legal and now live in Florida aren’t suddenly better off.

“I’m sorry to say that it means that we still have quite a bit to fight for here in the state of Florida,” said Elizabeth F. Schwartz, president of the Miami Beach Bar Association and chairwoman of the Gay and Lesbian Lawyers Association of Miami.

Device aims to eliminate multiple breast-cancer surgeries

The device applies an adhesive film to breast tissue to prevent damage when it is sliced for microscopic inspection.

(Credit: Will Kirk)

A prototype device created by John Hopkins University grad students can enable a pathologist to inspect excised breast tissue mid-surgery to determine whether a cancerous tumor has been fully removed.

The prototype’s ability to dramatically reduce the time to inspect breast tissue — down to as quickly as 20 minutes — could ultimately decrease, if not flat out eliminate, the need for a second operation on the same tumor, John Hopkins announced this week.

One in five women who have surgery to remove cancerous breast tissue have to go back for follow-up surgery because not all the diseased tissue is removed. That amounts to about 60,000 patients annually in the U.S.

The four grad students became aware of the problem in 2012 during the school’s year-long biomedical engineering master’s program, when they were tasked with designing new medical tools to address urgent health care issues. Breast cancer surgeons told the students that they are “… [Read more]

The FDA Has Shuttered 1,677 Illegal Prescription Drugs Websites

Aereo coming to Chicago on September 13th

Aereo coming to Chicago on September 13th

Between Chicago Hope, Chicago Fire and, erm, The Chicago Code, the Windy City’s got a strong pedigree in television drama. That’s why it makes perfect sense that streaming TV service Aereo is coming to the Chicagoland area of Illinois on September 13th. As with Aereo’s other launches, users will be able to watch the local ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox (yup) affiliates on your computer, smartphone and tablet — with DVR add-ons starting at $8 a month. At the same time, we’ve also heard a rumor that Aereo CEO Chet Kanojia has revealed that the service would launch in Washington D.C. at some point in August, and we’ll keep an ear to the ground to see if that’s true.
