False memories created in mice, ‘Total Recall’ can’t be far

Memory formation in mice is probably very similar to that in humans.

It’s just a matter of time before we all have replicant companions, right? And they’ll need artificial memories like in “Blade Runner.”

That’s why we should all thank the scientists at the RIKEN-MIT Center for Neural Circuit Genetics, who have managed to implant artificial memories in mice. Doing it with biological androids should be no problem.

Reporting in the latest edition of the journal Science, Susumu Tonegawa and colleagues describe how they were able to get mice to believe they had been shocked in one place, when it had really happened in another.

They used a technique called optogenetics, in which neurons are modified to respond to light.

Going, going… Chromecast sold out online, but not everywhere

If you want to order one now, you'll need to pay more or go for a drive to Best Buy and cross your fingers.

(Credit: Sarah Tew/CNET)

If you’ve got your hands on Google’s red-hot, priced-to-move streaming media stick, the Chromecast, consider yourself among the lucky early adopters. The $35 HDMI device-to-display bridge is currently sold out on all three official online retail outlets — Best Buy, Amazon and the Google Play store.

Google says more supply is coming soon to the Play store, and almost certainly Amazon will have more stock to sell in the coming days or weeks. While Best Buy is sold out online, the Chromecast is scheduled to hit shelves in brick and mortar retail locations on Sunday. But if there’s a Best Buy near you, it might be worth heading over right away, as there have been … [Read more]

New Nexus 7 now available to order from Google's US Play Store

For those drawn to a thinner, lighter, more powerful version of the Android-based slate, orders can now be placed directly through Google’s Play Store… for customers located in the United States. Both the 16GB and 32GB WiFi-only models are still on track to ship by next Tuesday, while those on the lookout for a cellular version will need to wait a few more weeks. It’s Friday. Memo Mug is your traveling whiteboard

Don’t you hate those times when you think of something important, but you don’t have anything to write it down on? Sure, a lot of people have sticky notes at their desk, but what if you’re out, or maybe you’re in the break room at work? Why not just use something that you’re always going to have with you in the office? That’s right, I’m talking about your coffee mug.

If you’re someone that can’t go without your morning (and sometimes afternoon) cup of Joe, then you might enjoy this Memo Mug. This mug is similar to most, except that it has two special features. One is a flat side for jotting down little messages (or doodling, if that’s your thing) and a place to store a dry-erase marker. Otherwise, it is just your average, ordinary ceramic coffee mug.

This $15 mug might not be the most practical way to keep track of important information, however, it could make for a great office gag gift. If you know someone who always seems to be absent-minded, this could be a fun little way to make sure they remember to put the new cover sheets on those TPS reports.

Guy Creates 25 Hours of Additional Gameplay for Skyrim as His Resume

How do you stand out from the crowd so that prospective employers notice you? Well, there are lots of ways, but it is best to somehow show the quality of your work in an eye-catching way. Wow them. That’s what Alexander J. Velicky did. He created 25 extra hours of Skyrim.

skyrim mod
The 19-year-old Velicky loves Bethesda and would love to work for them, so he spent 2,000 hours creating a mod called “Falskaar” that adds 25 hours of gameplay to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. He created a land mass a third as big as the original map, which is pretty massive. He used 29 voice actors to record new dialog for his NPCs, and recruited over a 100 total people to help him with Falskaar. Now, he waits for a job.

“The best way to show Bethesda Game Studios that I want a job there and should be hired is to create content that meets the standards of their incredible development team,” he says.

I applaud his tactics and his enthusiasm.

Holovision Full Sized Hologram A Possibility

Holovision Full Sized Hologram A PossibilityHolograms have always fascinated humankind ever since the idea of it was shown off in a science fiction movie. In fact, who would not want to have a holographic representation of the other person on the line appear in front of you whenever you take a call? It would be so cool, and even cooler when you have a human-sized hologram to play around with. HoloVision could pave the way to such a future, where this Kickstarter project claims to deliver a free-floating, life-sized image that will hover eight feet from its projector, clearly making good ol’ R2-D2 obsolete with his rendition of Princess Leia.

Bear in mind that the Holovision effort, despite being life-sized, would not be able to interact with you or another person since all images projected cannot turn “physical” so to speak, leaving such imaginations to the fanciful world of Star Trek and its Holodeck. In order to make HoloVision a reality, the company behind the idea, Provision 3D Media, is keeping its fingers crossed to raise a whopping $950,000, and will you make your own contribution so that it ends up as a reality?
