Android Could Support 4K Displays

Android Could Support 4K DisplaysJust when you thought that it does not make sense to go higher than Full HD resolution on your smartphone because of the relatively small size compared to a monitor, not to mention that your eyes would probably be unable to make up the nuances of quality, here we are presented with whispers of the possibility of the Android operating system being able to support 4K displays. This is certainly something to sit up and take notice of, considering how tablets themselves do find it difficult to go beyond the 2,560 x 1,600 resolution mark.

The twist of course is that Android is not limited to smartphones and tablets. Google’s operating system already powers TVs and set top boxes that could benefit from a 4K resolution. It is also fair to say that 4K support would also allow Android mobiles to be connected directly to a 4K display, or manage a virtual 4K display.

How do we know that 4K is coming, you may ask? Well, apparently someone spotted a bunch of new code within Android 4.3 Jelly Bean that points out to this possible 4K support. It’s not too hard to believe since 4K is mainly a matter of allocating more resources and having the proper hardware support. Like it or not, just like 1080p before it, 4K is coming and no amount of skepticism will derail it.

Aaron Rodgers On Ryan Braun Suspension: ‘It Doesn’t Feel Great Being Lied To’

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers broke his silence regarding his friend and business partner Ryan Braun’s suspension on Friday afternoon.

“I was backing up a friend. He looked me in the eye on multiple occassions and repeatedly denied these allegations and said they were not true,” Rodgers told Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “So, it is disappointing, not only for myself as a friend, but for obviously Wisconsin sports fans, Brewer fans, really baseball fans. It doesn’t feel great being lied to like that and I’m disappointed in the way it all went down.”

After an arbitrator overturned the 2011 NL MVP’s 50-game suspension back in February 2012, Rodgers tweeted his support for Braun and used the word “exonerated” several times.

Stick It To The Military-Industrial Ink Complex By 3D Printing Your Own Printer Cartridges

kodak3dinkcartridgesx600

This has to be one of the most uniquely disruptive uses of 3D printing I’ve seen: an ink refill company has successfully 3D-printed a Kodak ink cartridge, refilled it, and printed with it. Using a Makerbot Replicator 2 and some PLA, the company created an exact replica of the Kodak cartridge casing and stuck in an ink bladder of their own devising, thereby creating a sort of Frankenstein’s monster of ink delivery.

To be clear the company, InkFactory, is fooling no one here. The ability to print an outer casing for an inkjet printer cartridge is fairly limited and is useful only if you have a nice supply of bladders or you break your cartridge. This holds doubly true for cartridges with chips and delivery systems built-in. Until we can make high-resolution, soft prints using a 3D printer, there is no real way to make an entire cartridge on a home printer and there is almost no way to replace the cartridges that have proprietary circuitry built in.

That said, the ease with which they replicated the casing and placed their own ink in is heartening. The fact that you can now measure, design, and build a proprietary object should strike fear in the hearts of ink merchants everywhere and there are plenty of people out there who would, in a fairly unscrupulous manner, supply the proper ink bladders to home makers who simply want the nozzle and ink container and will make their own PLA or ABS cartridges.

As a proof of concept it’s great. It’s a perfect storm of righteous indignation – ink refillers stick it to public enemy #1, ink salesmen, by using the tools of mass production. If Marx had a tech blog, he’d be all over this. It’s a cute, if sensational, way to get the word out about ink replacement and I’m sure it will send someone at what’s left of Kodak scrambling to type up a cease and desist letter.

New iPhones And iPad To Arrive This September 6 (Rumor)

New iPhones And iPad To Arrive This September 6 (Rumor)If you are an iPhone watcher (someone who is always on the lookout as to when the next generation iPhone is going to be released or unveiled), then you might want to mark this particular date down on your calendar – September 6th. Now that we are already coming to the end of July, there is a chance that September is when the new iPhone, as well as the purported iPhone Lite (a budget-oriented iPhone), is tipped to be revealed to the masses.

Why September? That is normally the traditional time where Apple rolls out new devices to the world, in addition to CEO Tim Cook having mentioned that new devices would arrive sometime in “the fall”, which September falls squarely into. Of course, who are we to deny the very present and real possibility of the iPad being announced on the same date as well? Are you looking forward to see whether September 6th will be the date where history is made once again? Or does the date not matter to you much, as long as Apple does what they do best – deliver shiny new products that are easy to use and highly desirable.

The FBI Has Used Spy Drones Without Warrants at Least 10 Times

The legality of drone surveillance is vague. But one thing is clear: the feds are using them, and we’ve just learned from a letter from the FBI Senator Rand Paul, they’ve used them without warrants in the U.S. in at least 10 different cases.

This Solar Sanitizer Will Bring Safer Surgery to the Developing World

Modern medical techniques, specifically stringent sterilization practices, have led to a dramatic drop in the number of post-op infections—assuming the facility has the necessary electricity and equipment to do so. However, in the remote regions of developing countries like India, neither of those is guaranteed. But that’s where Rice University’s new solar steamer comes in. This ingenious device cheaply and easily captures the Sun’s rays to sterilize anything from scalpels to human excrement. Huzzah, no more infections from backwoods surgeries! And—bonus—your shit no longer stinks.

Scientists Implant False Memories Into Mice

Scientists Implant False Memories Into MiceIt looks like there is no need for a telepath like Professor X in our reality to do the tricky job of memory implants, as there is always good ol’ science to fall back upon. It seems that scientists have successfully implanted false memories into mice, and this is made possible via optical fibers that have been inserted into a mouse’s brain activated memory forming cells. This will, in effect, implant false memories, although it is a pity that we do not have the likes of a talking mouse like Mickey to tell us that the false memories of Donald Duck getting down with Minnie implanted within are actually true.

This scientific team managed to make the mice wrongly associate a benign environment with a previous unpleasant experience, all from different surroundings, without the mouse actually being in such a situation. This development could very well be the key in shedding light on how false memories could have happened in the case of humans, although I do believe that it will take quite some time before that can happen. Hopefully this work does not mean that we will end up with false memories unwittingly.

Hipstamatic Oggl now available for Lumia, lets you post to Instagram from WP8

Hipstamatic Oggl app now available for Lumia, lets you post to Instagram from Windows Phone 8

It’s no secret that Windows Phone 8 users miss out on a variety of hit Android and iOS apps, including the ever-popular Instagram. Whether that application will ever make its way to Nokia’s lineup is anyone’s guess, but one new download will enable you to engage your better-equipped friends, albeit in a limited capacity. Hipstamatic Oggl, which is available free for Nokia’s Lumia 928, 925, 920 and 820 today, brings a selection of filters, and, perhaps most notably for some, allows you to share your images on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, in addition to the Oggl network. You can only upload your photos to Instagram, though — you can’t view images there, or add likes and comments.

Each download includes five “lenses” and five “films,” though you can access the full library of filters with a $3 three-month or $10 one-year subscription. If you’re not interested in paying to change colors and add borders, you can still snag 60 days of free access by downloading the app and creating an account before August 9th. Additionally, Lumia 1020 owners will have access to the Hipstamatic Oggl PRO app, which adds exclusive control over settings like white balance, ISO and shuttle speed. Download both at the source links below.
