In “Star Wars,” Darth Vader attempted to defend the first Death Star with a modified TIE Fighter known as the TIE Advanced x1. After thousands of hours of hard work, a team of German “Star Wars” fans, calling themselves Project X1, have completed a 2:1 scale model of Vader’s personal spaceship.

Based on plans designed by architect Markus Sammann, and using materials such as steel, plastic, and wood, a group of 20 people spent two years creating the 1.43-ton homage. The dimensions of the TIE Advanced x1 mockup — at 17 feet wide by 14.1 feet high by 15.7 feet long — would likely amaze any onlooker and certainly arouse any fan of the Empire. Project X1 notes the build is dedicated to “Star Wars” creator George Lucas, the 501st Legion, and fans of the sci-fi saga.

Early Benchmarks Show the New Nexus 7 Is Blazing Fast

The first batch of new Nexus 7s are in the hands of testers, so what’s the first thing everyone does? Run benchmarks, of course. And what do they all tell us? Google’s new tablet is blazing fast; especially considering it’s saddled with last year’s top-of-the-line processor. It’s almost as fast as an HTC One for goodness sake.

MetroPCS adds Lumia 521 and Optimus F3, covers 19 new cities

If you’ve been holding out for a new $40/month smartphone, you’re in luck. We’re not even three months separated from T-Mobile’s MetroPCS acquisition and the value carrier is already reaping benefits from Ms. Magenta. The Bring-Your-Own-Phone carrier is getting its first Windows 8 Phone handset, the HSPA+ Nokia Lumia 521, and the Jelly Bean-running LG Optimus F3. Both phones feature 5MP cameras, July 26th street dates for select markets and attractive pricing — the 521 is $99, while the F3 is $149. The news doesn’t stop rolling there, either.

Not only is the wireless provider’s device lineup expanding, but its coverage area is too. Metro’s availability is growing to 19 additional cities (listed after the break), including Washington, DC; Cleveland, Ohio and Fresno, California. Sadly, the embedded press releases don’t mention the most important aspect of all: whether you can get the F3 in a Grimace-worthy hue.

Friday Poll: Will you buy the new Nexus 7?

It's a step up from the original Nexus 7. Is it enough?

(Credit: James Martin/CNET)

It’s been over a year since the original Nexus 7 tablet took a bow. The much-anticipated update has now taken center stage and customers are mulling whether or not to buy it.

In this piece, Crave’s Eric Mack tosses around his pros and cons of buying one ASAP vs. waiting a bit. On one hand, he says, the device comes with the fresh Android 4.3 OS and boasts a nice screen-quality upgrade. On the other hand, a Verizon version may require a long wait and a better competitor could come along soon. Turns out he’s planning to hold off on a new Nexus 7 purchase (unless gadget envy overwhelms him).

All in all, the new Nexus 7 has a lot to recommend it over the original, such as a rear camera, a faster processor, and a thinner design (CNET gave it four stars; read the full review here). It comes at a slight price premium, but the upgrades may be enough to sway people who weren’t ready to commit to the first generation. Others see the update as involving mostly incremental improvements, which might not make the purchase as enticing as a full-on overhaul would have been.

12K gaming rig renders 1.5 billion pixels per second for just $17,000 (video)

DNP 12K gaming brings frame rates and resolution to OMFGlevels

Think your gaming rig’s impressive because it can run Metro: Last Light with maxed out settings at 60FPS? Well, Microsoft rounded up a trio of Sharp PN-K321 32-inch 4K monitors and wired them to a Windows 8 PC stuffed with three ASUS 7970 GPUs. The $17,000 experiment proved two things: Such tech is outside our price-range and it takes a huge amount of support to get it working. For instance, before AMD wrote custom drivers to make Eyefinity and multi-stream transport play nicely together, the framerate was a meager 8FPS. It’s worth noting that even after all that, demos only lasted a few minutes before the computer’s power supply would conk out — but maybe the kinks will be fixed in time for us to play Battlefield Bad Company 5 on it.
