Technology Really Is Making You Fat (But Not How You Think)

Technology Really Is Making You Fat (But Not How You Think)

It’s lazy to point out that technology makes us lazy. Of course it does. The entire idea of technology is predicated around an efficiency whose end is specifically a decline in human exertion. You know, lazy. But technology’s actually making us fat for another reason altogether.

Google reportedly testing ‘hyper-local’ news card for Now

Google reportedly testing local news card for Now

According to a report from Quartz, Google is preparing to launch an improved local news card in Now. The card would be an extension of its existing local news offerings, but would bring those stories directly to your handset based on your location. Quartz confirmed the card’s existence through Johanna Wright, the vice president of search and assist at Google. She described the card as be “hyper-local,” with granularity down to individual neighborhoods. According to Wright, the card is only being tested internally right now, and there’s no guarantee of when, or even if, Google will actually bring it to the public.

In many ways Now is meant to be a filter for the absurd amount of information constantly at your fingertips. It’s supposed to deliver only the information you need, when you need it. Problem is, Google still seems to be figuring out just what information you need at any given moment. Bus schedules, boarding passes, traffic reports, tourist attractions, calendar appointments, sports scores… the depth of data served up is growing more intimidating with every day. Now already delivers links to news stories that you’re following on your desktop. The logical next step (we suppose) is to serve up articles you didn’t know you were interested in, based on your location. We’ve reached out to Google for comment and confirmation, and we’ll update this story if we hear back.

AT&T Galaxy S3 Premium Suite Upgrade Released

AT&T Galaxy S3 Premium Suite Upgrade Released

The Android 4.1 update for AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3 was released back in December. That update was different from Samsung’s “premium suite” upgrade which brings a host of additional features such as multi-window. A little over two months ago the Verizon Galaxy S3 received its very own premium suite upgrade, AT&T was left out of the fray once again. Today is the big day though, the day when AT&T Galaxy S3 premium suite upgrade is rolled out to users all across the U.S.

The upgrade brings features such as multi-window, which lets users open two apps simultaneously in two different windows. There are a host of calendar, SD card and S-Voice enhancements onboard as well. The camera gets Auto Share Shot mode, which lets users share their videos and photos by tapping their Galaxy S3 with other NFC or S Beam enabled devices. A number of new AT&T apps have been added as well. Android OS version gets bumped to Android 4.1.2. Apart from all of this, expect the usual slew of bug fixes and performance improvements. AT&T starts rolling out the update today.

Life-size Mario seeks a new home

Mario can offer a home many things, including plumbing, kitchen, and eating expertise.

(Credit: Dream Shop)

No game room is complete without a pinnacle piece, and perhaps this near life-size Mario could be the perfect attention-getter — and/or nightmare inducer for small children.

But obtaining a nearly 5-foot-tall homage to the world’s most famous Italian plumber might be tougher than beating Bowser with only one life left. This giant Mario, available through Dream Shop in Japan, costs a whopping 285,000 yen ($2,900) plus shipping. Hopefully you’ve been saving up all those gold coins collected over the years.

Canon’s 1080p Legria mini camcorder makes it easy to film… yourself

Canon's 1080p Legria mini camcorder makes it easy to film yourself

Though we got tired of the word “selfie” in about 1/8000th of a second, it’s true that snapping yourself can be tricky, especially on video. Canon wants to aid and abet such vanity with the Legria mini, a 1080p camcorder with an ultra-wide angle lens, flipscreen and built-in stand. To make sure that we, er, you look as good as possible, Canon’s equipped it with a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor, DIGIC DV 4 processor, 12.8-megapixel still shooter, stereo audio and 160 degree wide lens (170 degrees for stills). You’ll also get built-in WiFi, an iOS app, DLNA support, time-lapse, slow motion and mirror image recording and playback. There’s even a decidedly HTC Zoe-like feature which takes a four second video when you snap a photo, and assembles them together when you’re ready. All of that should help keep your Vine, Video on Instagram and other filmic pipelines full. Check the PR and video after the break for more.

Galaxy S4 Benchmark “Optimization” Drama Hits Samsung

Galaxy S4 Benchmark “Optimization” Drama Hits Samsung

There’s a new wave of drama hitting the Samsung Galaxy S4 today. After running some tests tech site Anandtech has noticed that Samsung was allowing at least a version of the S4 to run its graphics processor (GPU) at higher frequency (533MHz) in some benchmarks, while games yielded a lower frequency of 480MHz. In other words, Samsung would be inflating its graphics horsepower by 11.04%. The reviewers were able to get accurate frequency numbers thanks to a built-in command available to anyone who can log as an administrator (root) in Android. (more…)

Rocker Cradle Lets You Rock out with Your Kid

As a kid, I’d always see my grandma rocking one of her grandkids to sleep in her lap on her rocking chair. (Yes, I was one of those grandkids, although obviously I wouldn’t be able to see myself if I’m the one being rocked.) Somehow, seeing that implanted the image that one day, I’d be rocking a baby to sleep in a rocking chair too. In this case, it won’t be my baby (because I don’t have one yet!) but my sister’s.

One thing I noticed lately is how heavy my niece is now, so my arms feel like they’re about to fall off after ten mere minutes. So when I saw this awesome Rocker Cradle woodworker Scott Morrison, I just knew it’s something like-minded people would love.

Rocker Cradle

The concept is pretty obvious: the adult is supposed to be in the seat, and the tiny tot lays beside you. Of course, it’s more comfortable for the baby if you line his or her space with some bedding or with a blanket.

Rocker Cradle1

When everyone’s all set, start rocking and start your very own family tradition. Just make sure the baby’s tucked in securely and that you don’t rock too hard, or else you might find yourself covered in baby barf.
