Is the world ready for a power strip/tote bag thing?

It's a tote bag. It's a charger. It's a ChargerGenie.

The ChargerGenie is a bit of a head-scratcher. At first glance, you might think it’s an insulated lunchbox, or perhaps a large makeup tote. On closer inspection, you’ll notice what looks like a power strip on the bottom. It consists of two things you don’t expect to see married to each other.

Once you take the time to contemplate the ChargerGenie, it starts to make a little more sense. It’s an Indiegogo project looking to raise $45,000 to go into production. Normally, you would stuff your electronic devices into a purse, sack, or some sort of bag, and then carry a power strip separately. This project simply puts them together.

One advantage of this odd combo is that everything tucks into one package. There are six outlets and two USB charging ports, all arranged around the bottom to accommodate wall warts. The power cord tucks away when not in use. You can shove a decent number of small gadgets and accessories into the main bag, zip them up, and head out.

Rand Paul: No One In Congress ‘Has A Stronger Belief In Minority Rights Than I Do’

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is pushing forward with Republican outreach efforts to black and Hispanic voters, asserting in a Yahoo News interview that he doesn’t “think there’s anyone in Congress who has a stronger belief in minority rights than I do.”

His comments were delivered in the wake of controversy surrounding the senator’s aide Jack Hunter, who resigned within the past week. Hunter, the co-author of Paul’s book The Tea Party Goes to Washington, came under fire for his past radio commentary supporting neo-Confederate ideology and denouncing the possibility of “a non-white majority in America.”

Paul has addressed that controversy head-on, defending Hunter as a talented and thought-provoking writer whose previous work was designed for political shock value.

HolograFX brings Star Wars-like holograms to your home

It’s fascinating to see how many technologies from science fiction have become reality. Sure, there are some things like hyperdrives and lightsabers that are still ahem light years away. But there are some that we keep getting closer and closer to, such as holograms. Sure, we’ve got plenty of things that we call holograms, but what we really want is that image of Princess Leia that Luke and Obi-Wan watched in the original Star Wars movie. Well, it looks like we might just be one step closer to that.

HolograFX is a new children’s toy that projects a free-standing hologram onto a flat surface. That’s right, you can pass your hand through it, just as in Star Wars. And yes, you capture your own moving image to be used. So put on your best Princess Leia outfit, and record your message to Obi-Wan. Unfortunately, the projection is 2D, so it’s not quite up to par yet, but it is in full color. This cool effect is actually just one part of a larger set of illusions for kids to perform for their friends and family. There is even a story mode for them to go through, if they want to play by themselves.

So how do they get this technology to work? Well, it actually uses a technique known as Pepper’s Ghost, which has been around for a while. This means that there is likely a clear film of some sort that you’re looking through, that allows the projection to be seen. You’ll need an iPhone or Android device to use it, as there is a companion app that controls everything. This is also what you will use if you want to project yourself as a holographic image. This neat toy will only set you back $35 if you pre-order it on RocketHub.

Mozilla experiments with content personalization based on your interests

Mozilla is known for its staunch support of its users’ privacy, but that isn’t stopping the team from exploring options for personalizing the web. In a blog post today, Justin Scott, Mozilla Labs’ product manager, discussed the possibility of incorporating your browser activity into an API that allows sites to prioritize their content based on your interests. For example, if you spend a lot of time looking up baseball scores, publishers could push related articles to the forefront just for you. Though that may sound like an overstepping of the bounds Mozilla has so strongly defended, the company insists that the ability to select what to share (if anything) with content creators will remain in the hands of the user. To read more about Mozilla Labs’ experiments and weigh in on the proposal, head on over to the source link below.

How To Encrypt Your Email And Other Lessons Learned At A Cryptoparty (VIDEO)

Ever since Edward Snowden pulled back the curtain on the National Security Agency’s cyberspying, there’s been an upswing in “cryptoparties,” where IT experts offer guidance on keeping online communications private.

HuffPost Live’s Josh Zepps talked with a few technology specialists to get the scoop on what exactly happens at these parties. According to Brian Penny, a blogger at Lifehack, it’s a chance for inexperienced Web users to learn easy ways to protect themselves with techniques like encrypting emails.

“It’s to let people know that when you’re sending a normal email, it’s the equivalent of sending a postcard through the mail — anybody can see what’s on there,” he said. “But when you use … encryption, it’s like putting that postcard in an envelope and sealing it so nobody can see it except you and the recipient.”

Giant Blue Cockerel Roosts At London’s Trafalgar Square

LONDON (AFP) — A huge blue cockerel descended upon London’s Trafalgar Square on Thursday, but the artwork has ruffled feathers by putting the symbol of France in a site marking a famous British victory over Napoleon.

Standing 4.7 metres (15.5 feet) tall and coloured a vivid ultramarine, the fibreglass rooster was sculpted by German artist Katharina Fritsch and will watch over the famous square for 18 months.

Titled Hahn/Cock, it was officially unveiled by London’s Mayor Boris Johnson — who said he would try to refrain from making any rude “double entendres” about the erection of a giant cockerel at the London landmark.

“I just had an emergency briefing from the brilliant artist, Katharina,” he joked.

“She said it was all to do with a woman’s rendition of a man… or something like that. I think it’s one of those occasions where politicians have to resist any kind of artistic interpretation.”

It is the latest artwork to stand on the tourist hotspot’s “Fourth Plinth”.

Fritsch, 57, has said she did not know the cockerel was an unofficial French symbol, and that she intended it to represent strength and regeneration.

“But it’s a nice humorous side-effect to have something French in a place that celebrates victory over Napoleon,” she told the Guardian newspaper, adding: “He has come back as a cockerel!”

Trafalgar Square is named after the victory of the British Royal Navy over the French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, a key conflict in the Napoleonic Wars.

The cockerel will be sited on the other side of the square from Nelson’s Column, a monument commemorating the English naval hero Admiral Horatio Nelson, who was killed during the battle.

A group of conservationists had tried to get the bird banned from the square, saying it was “totally inappropriate, however fanciful and dramatic it might appear to be”.

There are four large stone plinths at each corner of Trafalgar Square, three of which bear statues. The fourth was supposed to hold a statue of a horse commissioned in 1841, but due to insufficient funds it was never completed.

Since 1998 the fourth plinth has been used to showcase temporary pieces of art, and has so far hosted works including a giant ship in a bottle and a huge nude statue of the English artist Alison Lapper, who was born without arms, during her pregnancy.
