Augmented-reality greeting cards really pop out at you

Share your love with a little red robot.

Years ago, someone came up with the bright idea of building little pop-ups into greeting cards so, when you open them, a little paper birthday cake or present jumps out at you. That concept is not too far off from what greeting card company Artiphany and augmented-reality tech company DAQRI are trying to do with the Gizmo Kickstarter project.

Gizmo greeting cards all sport a red robot on the front. Download the DAQRI app, point your phone or tablet at the front of the card, and watch an interactive animation come to life. The cards can be customized with stickers for sharing birthday, winter holiday, and Valentine sentiments.

A different set of animations is triggered by each sticker. The winter holiday sticker has the robot snowboarding. The birthday sticker causes the robot to show off a special cake. The love sticker involves the robot opening up a box of nuts and bolts and presenting it like a box of chocolates.

The NSA Hated Civilian Encrypted Data Way Back in the 1970s

In the 1970s, civilian researchers at places like IBM, Stanford and MIT were developing encryption to ensure that digital data sent between businesses, academics and private citizens couldn’t be intercepted and understood by a third party. This concerned folks in the U.S. intelligence community who didn’t want to get locked out of potentially eavesdropping on anyone, regardless of their preferred communications method. Despite their most valiant efforts, agencies like the NSA ultimately lost out to commercial interests. But it wasn’t for lack of trying.

11 Million Undocumented Immigrants’ Faces

Sign a petition. Call your congressman. Go to a town hall meeting. These are a few of the things you can do to show your support for immigration reform.

But with the House basically sitting on reform until September — at the earliest — immigrant rights supporters are looking for creative ways to empower and expand their base.

That’s where the mobile art project “Inside Out 11M” comes in. The campaign is heading to at least 20 cities this summer to put a human face on immigration reform, telling stories with images instead of political slogans.

‘Orphan Black’ Season 2: Producers Spill On What’s Next For Tatiana Maslany And Friends

It’s not often that a recent Supreme Court ruling comes up during a discussion of a cult TV show, let alone at a Comic-Con panel that, for the most part, feels like a raucous rock concert.

But such is the short, weird, extraordinary life of BBC America’s “Orphan Black,” one of the most well-received dramas in recent memory. In a few short months, it’s gone from obscure newcomer to buzzworthy pop-culture favorite, with critics, high-profile fans and a loyal audience keeping the show in the public eye long after its June 1 season finale.

(This post assumes you’ve seen the first season of “Orphan Black.” If you haven’t, get on that and come on back when you’re done.)

Dealzmodo: Rockstar Games, $10 Earbuds, iPod Touch, Haswell, Keurig

Gizmodo already told you the Chromecast was a no-brainer, so you don’t need my help with that one. Gamefly is having a ridiculous deal on Rockstar games today, and I decided the Dealzmodo readers deserved to share the wealth. Besides, the 3TB External I was going to run with expired. Like in said in the Moneysaver, you can get 4 GTA games, 3 Max Paynes, Bully, L.A. Noire, and all related DLC for the bunch for $35, which is laughably cheap. [Gamefly]

Google donates $600,000 to bring free WiFi to San Francisco parks

Google donates $600,000 to bring free WiFi to San Francisco parks

San Francisco has been striving for city-wide internet access since 2007, and with a little help from Mountain View, it’s now one step closer to achieving that lofty goal. After receiving a $600,000 donation from Google, 31 public parks in one of the world’s most tech-savvy cities will have free WiFi for at least two years. Google’s gift will cover installation and maintenance of all necessary equipment for the project, which builds upon the the city’s existing public WiFi hotspots like San Francisco International Airport and City Hall. While blanket coverage for the entire city is still a ways off, offering free internet access in places like public parks is a giant step forward in making the web accessible for all.

Sandra Bullock On ‘The Heat 2’: ‘I Can’t Imagine It’

“The Heat,” Paul Feig’s hilarious buddy cop comedy with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, has been one of the surprise hits of this summer, earning $130 million in North America since its release on June 28. Before “The Heat” even debuted, studio Twentieth Century Fox commissioned screenwriter Katie Dippold to work on a sequel, owing to the advance buzz humming off the comedy in the lead-up to its premiere.

“I really like the idea we have for the sequel. I’m really excited about it,” Dippold told HuffPost Entertainment in an interview. “I can’t say what it is. I wish I could. I really wish I could, but I can’t: I would be immediately fired and murdered. But I really think it could be so fun. So I’m hopeful that we get to do it.”

Unfortunately, Dippold may not get the chance. Speaking with EW.com at Comic-Con, Bullock said she wasn’t interested in doing a sequel to “The Heat” at this stage in her career.

Roaming Cats Savagely Attack Woman Walking Dog In France

Cats may look fluffy and cuddly, but any cat owner knows there’s mischief behind those wide eyes.

One pet owner in France learned as much, when a pack of at least six cats attacked the woman while she was walking her dog near a forested area in Belfort on Sunday evening, according to local reports.

The 31-year-old woman sustained several injuries on her legs and arms, including a nicked artery. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment, while her pet poodle, which was also wounded in the cat attack, was separately transported to a veterinarian clinic.
