If you’ve ever wanted to help out with a scientific research project but lack the PhD credentials, there’s now a much simpler way: all you need is a decent Android device and a new app called BOINC. Similar to projects such as Folding@Home for laptops and desktops, the app harnesses your mobile device’s extra CPU cycles to help crunch data for scientific studies. Don’t worry, it’ll only work if you’re on Wi-Fi, so it won’t eat up your data plan. You can choose which research endeavor to support from within BOINC, including Einstein@Home and FightAIDS@Home that seek to discover pulsars (stellar remnants) and AIDS treatment, respectively. The app, which you can install from Google Play, was designed to be as unobtrusive as possible and will work as long as you’re running Android 2.3 or higher. Generous (and envious) iOS users, sit tight — the developer is mulling over the possibility of creating an iOS app next.

Gillian Anderson: Sex Scene With David Duchovny On ‘The X-Files’ Never Happened’ (VIDEO)
Posted in: Today's ChiliGillian Anderson wanted to set the record straight about a comment she made during Comic-Con this year. She dropped by “The Tonight Show” to clear up any misunderstanding. It wasn’t a misunderstanding of what she said exactly, though. That part everyone is getting exactly right.
At Comic-Con, Anderson reunited with her “The X-Files” co-star, David Duchovny, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the show. While there, she told the press that the pair once shot a sex scene that never made it to TV. As it turns out, this never happened.
“I made a joke about it, but it isn’t true. There wasn’t one. We did have sex, because we had a child,” Anderson said of their characters. “We didn’t film the process of making the child.”

This is a robot system for keyhole surgery, consisting of a master unit operated by the surgeon, and a slave unit that moves on the patient side.
“A feature of the slave robot is, it’s powered entirely by air. Nearly all conventional robots are electrically powered, but by driving this robot pneumatically, we’ve made it possible to gently absorb the force when the robot touches something. The force on the tip of the robot is estimated from the air pressure data, and that information is sent to the surgeon’s master robot. So, it can be fed back to the surgeon’s hand. Alternatively, a large force can be produced by a very lightweight, compact unit. An advantage of this system is, the robot overall can be made extremely compact.”
“Here, the user is operating the master robot. This demonstration enables you to experience, for example, how you can feel the reaction force when you pull the rubber band.”
“Of course, you can eliminate shaking of the hand, change the motion ratio, and change the force feedback factor. So, depending on the medical staff and the situation, the parameters can be varied, to make the system easier to use on the spot.”
“Currently, we aim to build this system for one-third to one-tenth the cost of the da Vinci surgical system. So, we think we can make it better in terms of cost as well.”
“Right now, we’re working with surgeons, who are actually using this system and giving us feedback on how to improve it. We’re receiving support from MEXT, and we aim to achieve a practical version within 4 to 5 years.”

Nokia Lumia 625 official: a 4.7-inch Windows Phone with LTE, coming this September for 220 euros (hands-on)
Posted in: Today's ChiliThe rumors were true. Nokia’s revealed its biggest phone to date, with a screen measuring in at 4.7 inches. It’s the Lumia 625, and it joins a series that has grown a fair bit since the Lumia 620 launched earlier this year. Compared to that earlier phone, the 625 keeps the same resolution (a slightly pixelated 800 x 480), but bumps the processing power up to a dual-core Snapdragon S4. Despite that hulking LCD screen, however, it’s still thinner than the Lumia 920 at 9.15mm (0.36 inches). It’s a Nokia smartphone, so there are plenty of HSPA radio gadgetry to keep the global fanbase happy. What’s more — and this is rare for an entry-level Lumia — it also has LTE. Specifically, we’re looking at the British EE-friendly Band 3 option here, alongside Bands 7 and 10.
If there’s anything to remind us that this is no flagship device, it’s the camera. Don’t expect any 41-megapixel sensors. In fact, get ready to be a little underwhelmed by a 5-megapixel camera module, although you’ll still get the likes of the animated gif-making Cinemagraph and the same Smart Camera app seen on the Lumia 925. You’ll have 8GB of internal memory to fill with your best photo moments, and there’s also a microSD slot behind the removable back. Meanwhile, customization options include orange, green, yellow, white and black cases, although there’s no turquoise shade like we saw on the Lumia 620. It’s headed to EE, Vodafone, O2, Phones4U and Carphone Warehouse in early September, priced at £200 or 220 euros for continental Europeans. Find our hands-on impressions (and a video!) right after the break.

Hoda Kotb Gossips About How Dirty Her ‘Today’ Co-Workers On ‘Watch What Happens: Live’ (VIDEO)
Posted in: Today's ChiliHoda Kotb was very chatty on “Watch What Happens: Live,” and more than willing to dish juicy gossip about her “Today” show co-workers. As she revealed, they’re apparently a lot dirtier than most viewers of the show might think.
“I filled in one day and [Matt Lauer] was telling me that his dog’s name is Jules,” she said. “I go, ‘Jules like sparkly jewels?'” According to Kotb, Lauer corrected her, gesturing toward his crotch and saying it was jewels like that.
She said that Willie Geist may look preppy, but he’s pretty raunchy, too. And Savannah Guthrie, who’s as sweet as can be, made her download the raunchiest song she’s ever heard. “She has a whole other side and it’s so awesome,” Kotb said.
