MacBook Air Owner Rigs External GPU To His Computer Via Thunderbolt

Let’s face it, while the MacBook Air is certainly a decent computer that is fast and portable, it can hardly be called a gaming machine. In fact running Diablo 3 on it saw temperatures on my computer shoot up to 90C! Well at the same when there’s a will, there’s a way, right? It seems that one particular MacBook Air owner decided to see if it would be possible to turn his computer into a gaming rig of sorts, and thanks to a bit of tinker and a somewhat complex setup, he managed to hook a high-end graphics card to the computer!

Of course this setup required him to run Windows on Boot Camp due to the graphic card driver requirements, but apart from that it seems that he managed to get the whole thing running. Due to the entire setup being plugged into the Thunderbolt port on his MacBook Air, it is pretty easy to remove which makes it ideal for taking with you on the go, not to mention the open setup should help cool down the GPU pretty well. In any case if you’d like to learn how he set it up and what his results were, head on over to the forums for the details, or check out the video above to see it in action.

Nintendo Only Sold 160,000 Wii U Consoles Last Quarter

Nintendo Only Sold 160,000 Wii U Consoles Last QuarterNintendo’s Wii U is clearly not doing as well as the company had hoped, and recent figures on the console’s sales have not changed that. According to a recent report by Nintendo, it was revealed that the company made an operating loss of around $50 million on net sales of $832 million in the first quarter of its financial year. The report went on to reveal the number of Wii U consoles that were sold worldwide between the months of April to June, with the console selling around 160,000 units. While this number seems pretty big to the average observer, it should be noted that this is actually a 51.3% decrease from last quarter.

3.61 million units of the Wii U console have been sold so far and this is shy of Nintendo’s prediction of 5.5 million systems they expected to move by the end of March. Nintendo 3DS handheld console sales have also dipped to 1.4 million units over the quarter, a decrease of 25% from last year, although software sales have gone up which some have attributed to new titles. Earlier it was reported that a UK retailer had decided to drop the Wii U console from all their locations. Nintendo executives have even gone as far as to blame the 2011 Tohoku earthquake as the reason the sales have been sluggish.

Pwnie Express' Pwn Plug R2 lets you hackproof networks over 4G

Pwnie Express has a knack for stuffing powerful security testing tools into innocuous housings, and this time their flexing that unique talent with the Pwnie Plug R2. Ars Technica’s gotten ahold of the contraption ahead of its debut at the Black Hat conference, and it’s boasting a healthy number of upgrades, including 4G service through AT&T and T-Mobile. Security hawks keen on testing network safety will be greeted with a fresh UI, one-click penetration tests and a new OS dubbed Pwnix, which is a custom version of the Debian-based Linux distro Kali. When it comes to hardware, the box packs a 1.2GHz Armada-370 ARM CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 32GB microSDHC card, a pair of gigabit Ethernet ports, a high-gain industrial Bluetooth adapter, two USB slots and a microUSB port. Naturally, the package supports WiFi 801.11 b/g/n and carries a SIM slot for those cases where you need to SSH in from halfway ’round the globe. If the $895 asking price doesn’t make you flinch — or you dig daydreaming about hacking for good or evil — venture to the source for a breakdown of the gear’s abilities.

BlackBerry Executive Does Not Think The Company Is In Trouble

BlackBerry Executive Does Not Think The Company Is In TroubleOver the past few days we’ve seen reports where it suggested that Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform was doing pretty well, with a recent report from Kantar suggesting an 8.1% market share in the UK, putting them ahead of BlackBerry. This “success” was the replicated in the US where Windows Phone, despite falling a bit in market share, was still ahead of BlackBerry, and we’re sure at this point some are wondering if there’s anything BlackBerry can do to pull themselves up. There is also the question of, is BlackBerry in trouble because of this? (more…)

Sony Full-Frame NEX Camera Rumored For 24th September Announcement

Sony Full Frame NEX Camera Rumored For 24th September AnnouncementRecent rumors have suggested that Soy could be looking to launch a full-frame NEX camera later this year, and thanks to a recent report from Sony Alpha Rumors, it looks like the launch date is potentially pegged for the 24th of September. This is according to a source who tipped them off to the possible launch date, although at this point in time there is no word from Sony if they have any plans to hold an event around that time. Their source has revealed that this has been a project in the works for the past two years and will show off the close collaboration between Sony and Olympus, where Olympus is said to have provided the sensor image stabilization technology similar to that on the E-M5 model.

In any case additional details of the camera include its size, which supposedly is slightly bigger than the NEX-7, but other than that the full hardware specifications remain unknown. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but for now that’s pretty much the only date we have so you can be sure we will be keeping our eyes and ears peeled for more information, and marking our calendars just to be safe! So, who else is excited at the possibility of a full-frame NEX camera?

ASUS Does Not Find Windows RT To Be “Very Promising”

ASUS Does Not Find Windows RT To Be Very PromisingWhile ASUS has been pretty successful in the past with their Android tablet offerings, like the Transformer Pad, and with them helping Google make their Nexus 7 tablets, we guess they were hoping to replicate that success with Windows. Unfortunately it seems that ASUS is not as pleased with the Windows RT operating system and the company’s chairman, Jonney Shih, was quoted as saying that the Windows RT scene is “not very promising”. This does not mean that ASUS will be pulling out of the Windows tablet market, but instead ASUS will be focusing their efforts on creating devices that will be powered by Intel’s chips, and presumably running Windows 8 instead of Windows RT, which is powered by ARM-based processors. The reason behind this is apps, because Shih believes that people still rely a lot on classic Windows apps which might not be available for the RT platform.

Nokia Lumia 928 Owners Reporting Random Freezes

Nokia Lumia 928 Owners Reporting Random FreezesAre you planning on picking up a Nokia Lumia 928 for yourself? If you are perhaps you might want to hold out until an update has been issued because according to a smattering of reports across the internet’s various forums, such as Verizon, Microsoft, Nokia, and etc., it seems that the Lumia 928 is experiencing a bit of a freezing problem. At the moment it is unknown as to why these freezes might be happening, and there does not appear to be a fix. The problem has been reported as how the phone continues to operate, but the issue is that it does not appear to be registering any touch input from the user, essentially making it equivalent to you poking your monitor and expecting something to happen.

It seems that the problem persists even after performing a hard reset on the phone, which undoubtedly sounds pretty troubling. Several comments have pointed out that this has happened to other devices not of the Lumia 928 variety as well, although most of the complaints do come from Lumia 928 users. In any case hopefully Microsoft and Nokia are looking into this and will issue a statement or an update that will fix it soon.
