Doppelganger is a Jacket, Long Coat, and Sleeping Bag In One

It’s a jacket, it’s coat, no wait… it’s a sleeping bag and all of the above!

The Doppelganger Outdoors Wearable Sleeping Bag might seem like a confusing article of clothing at first, but it’s actually extremely useful once you’re familiar with all the possible ways you can wear it.

Doppelganger Sleeping Bag

First of all, it’s a jacket. That’s the purple part of the Doppelganger shown above. It offers basic protection against the elements, so if you’re traveling or going on a trio outdoors, then this is one of the essentials that you should pack along with you. If it’s getting too chilly or rainy, then unzip to release the gray portion to extend the Doppelganger into a long coat.

And when you’re finally ready to turn in for the night, just unzip a couple more times to release the blue-colored extensions of the Doppelganger to turn it into a sleeping bag.

The Doppelganger jacket is a bit pricey though, but just think of it as three things in one and maybe you can justify its price. It sells for $138(USD) from the Japan Trend Shop.

Your face, made from Hubble images

Crave writer Michelle Starr made of stars.

Carl Sagan was not the first to make this observation, but perhaps he put it most succinctly when he wrote in 1973, “Our sun is a second- or third-generation star. All of the rocky and metallic material we stand on, the iron in our blood, the calcium in our teeth, the carbon in our genes, were produced billions of years ago in the interior of a red giant star. We are made of star stuff.”

That’s what immediately came to mind when we saw Spanish artist Sergio Albiac‘s Stardust, a series of portraits made up of the stuff of the universe. There’s something about that small piece of knowledge that is comforting; although we may not last forever, the stuff of which we are made continues on, in some form or another.

Creativity, Albiac believes, is also eternal — and while the artist might die, what if a work could continue on?

So he designed Stardust, a piece of software that can make artistic decisions,… [Read more]

HTC One mini launching on almost all UK carriers around August 9th

HTC One Mini launching on all UK carriers from August

We’ve reached out to all of the usual suspects, and only one of them hasn’t stuck a thumb up and winked when we’ve asked if it’ll be carrying HTC’s “diminutive” new smartphone. O2, EE, Vodafone, Phones4U and Carphone Warehouse have all confirmed that they’ll carry the One mini, while ThreeUK has yet to get back to us. There’s no solid information on how much the device will cost on a monthly or one-off basis, but Carphone Warehouse is already accepting sim-free pre-orders for a very plausible £380. That same retailer is also saying that the phone is due to arrive on August 9th, but we’ll take that assertion with a pinch of environmentally-friendly salt.

What 600 Billion Billion Kilometers of Quasar Light Looks Like

What 600 Billion Billion Kilometers of Quasar Light Looks Like

Rural Canadian town developing nation’s first 1Gbps internet service

Rural Canadian town developing nation's first 1Gbps internet service

All you cool city cats on DSL, eat your heart out — a 1Gbps fiber internet service will soon be speeding up the lives of 8,500 residents in Olds, a rural community in Alberta, Canada. Around 60% of the populace can sign up for the $170 / month plan at the moment, but a new pricing scheme will bring it down to $57. That’s cheaper than Google Fiber, folks, which is made possible by the fact that the town itself owns the service. In fact, it’s the Olds Institute for Community and Regional Development (a non-profit) that took the bull by the horns, securing a $2.5 million grant from the Alberta government and a $6 million loan from the town itself to fund the fiber network construction. It’s thanks to the town’s authorities that the residents can soon rid themselves of crappy internet, while the rest of us can only look on in envy.

Notion Ink renders show Adam II, accessories and EVE smartphone

Notion Ink renders show Adam II, accessories and EVE smartphone

Notion Ink‘s been teasing the Adam II for well over a year now, and while the first generation left us cold, we’re curious to see what the second attempt brings to the table. A series of renders recently surfaced that allegedly show the Android tablet, its accessories / packaging and a companion smartphone concept named EVE. It’s unclear if the images — which have since been pulled — are legitimate, but the design appears to match previous leaks. The accessories include a collapsible docking station, USB charger, stylus and dual-tone leather carrying case. What’s most intriguing, however, is the EVE smartphone which also runs Android and features a 4-inch capacitive touchscreen along with a secondary display mounted on its spine, just like the Adam II. Check out the gallery below for the complete set of pictures.

Rice Cube lets you spice things up in the kitchen

“Sign up for Uncle Sam and you are in for three square meals a day!”, or so that is what I have been told concerning wartime propaganda in the past. Life was a whole lot tougher then, especially when nations are warring against one another. Well, there was no way to induce such a literal meaning to your meals back then, but here we are in the 21st century, and there is very little concerning food that we cannot do. With the £9.99 Rice Cube, you can literally turn your meal of rice into a square one.

If you tend to host plenty of folks in your home every single week, and want to offer something that will result into a conversation starter, then the Rice Cube makes plenty of sense, as your everyday serving of rice is turned into art. Talk about composing cool cubic culinary creations, and it allows you to churn out sexy looking sushi, desserts as well as snacks in a matter of seconds. Simple in form and function, but devastatingly cool utensil if you want to rack up the compliments from your guests for your creativity. Socialmatic camera priced at $300, channels Sting for marketing tagline

DNP Socialmatic camera priced, channels Sting for marketing tagline

Polaroid’s second chance has a price, and it’s $299. At that amount though, it’s hard to tell how much the novelty of instant-printing is worth in comparison to less kitschy and more capable options. What’s more, Socialmatic is confirmed to ship with Android. Just imagine what a sepia-tinged faded print will look like six months on.

[Thanks, Christian]

Your VW Is Toast!

VW Minibus ToasterThere are people who are really into cars. And then there are people who are really into Volkswagens. They just seem to be more passionate and obsessed by the iconic Nazi car than other car people. To that end all sorts of collectibles and other products have been created to commemorate the German vehicles — such as a toaster in the shape of a VW bus that brands the toast with the VW logo.

Rovio Account now globally available for iOS and Android devices

What does the global rollout of Rovio Account mean for completists like us? It means that whenever we download Angry Birds to a new Android or iOS device, we can just pull down our current progress — sparing us the chore of having to re-complete Poached Eggs, Mighty Hoax and Danger Above from scratch. So far, the option is only available on the original Angry Birds and The Croods, but the game maker has promised that the rest of its titles will be included in the near future.
