MVNO Ting joins the Windows Phone crowd with launch of HTC 8XT

Sprint just recently announced that it will be offering the HTC 8XT on July 19th, but it turns out it’s not the only option for those interested the phone. Upstart Ting has just announced that it is now taking pre-orders for the device, making it the first Windows Phone device available on the MVNO. Not many surprises beyond that, as you might expect — the device is available off-contract per usual (running $373), and the phone itself is the same as you’ll find on Sprint, including a 4.3-inch WVGA display, 1.4GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 CPU, 8 megapixel camera and HTC’s trademark “BoomSound.” Those looking for a different take on Windows Phone can also look for an unspecified Samsung ATIV device to be available on Ting sometime soon.

Reel-to-Reel Tape Deck Calculator Does Not Compute

Boy, I haven’t seen a reel-to-reel tape deck in years. After 8-tracks, cassettes, CDs, MiniDiscs and MP3s, we’re at least five generations past the everyday use of these things. And dekstop calculators? I haven’t used one in a very long time either. Between my smartphone and my computer, I’ve had no reason to have one. But that hasn’t stopped somebody from mashing up these two obsolete technologies into one new device.

retro tape deck calculator

This retro-style LCD calculator combines these old-school gadgets into one – though it only works as a calculator and won’t play your old spools of magnetic tape, no matter how hard you try. On the plus side, you don’t need to worry about getting your tape tangled up.

If you actually have some use for this thing, it sells for £8.49 (~$13USD) over at I Want One of Those.

Mark David Of California Got The Best 60th Birthday Present Ever: A Kiss From A Gorilla! (VIDEO)

Mark David of California has long had an unusual item on his bucket list: “Tracking gorillas.”

This year, in honor of his 60th birthday next month, David and his family embarked on what his son, Brandon, described as an “epic adventure.” The exciting journey included a visit to London followed by five days exploring the Ugandan bushland. At the Bwindi National Park, home of the Mubare gorilla group, David saw his gorilla tracking dreams come true, ABC News reported.

After a two-hour hike that involved hacking brush with a machete to clear a trail, the David finally discovered a family of 12 gorillas in a clearing. David sat down on a rock to take in the incredible scene before him when one of the gorillas approached him slowly, getting closer and closer until he was finally barely a breath away. David and the gorilla locked eyes for a moment before the gorilla gave David a standout 60th birthday gift: a kiss on the cheek!

15 Cent Hot Dogs At Wienerschnitzel On Sunday To Celebrate National Hot Dog Month

There’s nothing more American than the hot dog — and at 15 cents a pop, who can say no.

Wienerschnitzel is offering 15-cent hot dogs this Sunday, July 21, as a throwback to its 1960s price, LAist reports. In honor of National Hot Dog Month (that’s right!), the restaurant is offering its original Chili Dog, Mustard Dog or Kraut Dog, one 15-cent dog per person.

Irvine-based Wienerschnitzel has over 300 locations, predominantly in California and Texas, although some scattered across the country as well. The founder of the restaurant, John Galardi, passed away in recent months so the 15-cent special is also in his honor, the OC Weekly reports.

D.C. Heat Wave Straining Shelter, Forcing Homeless Out In Heat

With temperatures in the 90s, D.C.-area homeless shelters are running out of space at a torrent pace, putting homeless women and children at a serious risk, according to a report by WTOP.

David Treadwell, the executive director of Central Union Mission, told WTOP that the shelter in Northwest Washington filled almost immediately after its doors opened Tuesday morning.

And the story of one mother and daughter highlights just how tough it is in this kind of weather.
