Nintendo reports quarterly revenue down, only 160,000 Wii U consoles sold

Nintendo reports quarterly revenue down, 160,000 Wii U consoles sold

Nintendo has just revealed its consolidated results for the April-June quarter, and they show a significant 3.8 percent decline in sales compared to the same quarter last year — despite (or perhaps because of) the release of the semi-next-gen Wii U. This console sold just 160,000 units during the quarter, or less than half the number of units shifted between January and March. The company’s original sales projections for the device, and its hope of selling nine million units by March 2014, are now a distant dream — we’re looking at a lifetime total of just 3.61 million sales. On a more positive note, however, it still managed to sell a million Wii U games, and 1.4 million 3DS handhelds. In addition, the year-over-year fall in revenue was much smaller than the one Nintendo suffered in Q2 2012, and its operating loss was much smaller too — just under five billion yen in the red. Factoring in all the company’s various sources of income, it managed to eke out a net profit of 8.6 billion yen, or $88 million, so there’s some life in this playful old outfit yet.

Marvell flaunts its Armada 1500-mini CPU powering Chromecast, lists codecs

Marvell touts its Aramada 1500mini CPU powering Chromecast

Ever since Google TV made the move from Intel to ARM processors, Marvell has been there with its Armada 1500 CPU, providing decoding, power management and wireless support. As recent FCC documents showed, that arrangement hasn’t changed, and Marvell has just formally introduced its Armada 1500-mini processor at the heart of Chromecast. The scaled-down chip provides it (and other USB-powered devices) with 1080p decoding along with features like DRM support and access to TV-centric applications like YouTube and Netflix. Marvell also filled us in on what kind of video decoding the hardware is capable of: it supports most H.264 profiles, MPEG2/4, WMV9, VP6/8, DivX-HD and most digital audio formats (see the PR for a complete list). The high-profile Google connection aside, Marvell also said the chip will work great for other laptop, smartphone and Smart TV streaming applications. On top of that, Mountain View wants to get Chromecast tech natively into Smart TVs and other devices through its Google Cast SDK — no doubt putting Marvell on the ground floor.

‘Catfish: The TV Show’: Max Unloads On A Guy Who Doesn’t Care That He Lies Online To Girls (VIDEO)

It was easily one of the most emotional encounters on “Catfish: The TV Show.” Oddly, though, it was creators Max Joseph and Nev Schulman who got the most worked up after helping high-school-student Jen learn the truth about her online boyfriend, Skylar.

Jen had only ever seen two photos of him and he refused to video-chat with her, despite being a computer science major. They weren’t even friends on Facebook. But after some digging, Nev and Max tracked his phone number to a guy in San Francisco. Unfortunately, that guy wasn’t Skylar. It was Bryan, who’d made Skylar up.

Jen was heartbroken, understandably, but Max and Nev quickly got worked up as well. Probably because Bryan was so nonchalant about having lied to this girl and then watching her heart break in front of him because of it.

Civilian Casualties Afghanistan: Deadly Attacks Rise As International Forces Hand Over Security

(Refiles to expand coding; text unchanged)

* Casualties in Afghanistan up by 23 percent compared to 2012:U.N. report

* Women and children increasingly the victims in 12-year-old war

* Insurgents target areas already vacated by international forces

By Jessica Donati

KABUL, July 31 (Reuters) – Violence against civilians has risen by almost a quarter in Afghanistan as international forces hand security to Afghans, the United Nations said in a report on Wednesday, with insurgents striking in areas where troops have already left.

The report, presented by the Human Rights Director for the U.N. in Afghanistan, said the number of dead and injured civilians had increased by 23 percent in the first six months of 2013, compared to the same period last year.

Women and children are increasingly the victims of the 12-year-old war, the report said, noting a 30 percent leap in the number of children killed. The total civilian death toll stood at more than 1,300, with 2,533 reported injuries.

Mounting casualties are reinforcing fears about Afghanistan’s ability to tackle the Taliban insurgency on its own, after most foreign troops leave next year. The Afghan army faces one of the highest desertion rates in the world and a chronic lack of logistical and medical support.

“The stepped-up transition of security responsibilities from international military forces to Afghan forcse and closure of international forces’ bases was met with increased attacks by anti-government elements…,” Georgette Gagnon said in presenting the report.

The intensified attacks occurred “mainly at checkpoints, on strategic highways, in some areas that had been transitioned and in districts bordering neighbouring countries”.

Figures released in 2012 showed a decline in civilian deaths compared to the previous year.

The U.N. report said bombs, or improvised explosive devices (IEDs), remained the single greatest killer, claiming 53 percent more victims than last year, most of them children.

Fighting between security forces and insurgents had emerged as the second most significant cause of civilian deaths, with the report putting the death toll in crossfire at 207.

Both sides were responsible for civilian deaths, but the report said almost three-quarters were caused by insurgents, who were increasingly targeting civilians seen to be cooperating with the government, the report said.

Gagnon urged insurgents to “stop deliberate targeting and killing of civilians and withdraw orders that permit attacks” on legal personnel, clergy and government workers.

But the Taliban said anyone supporting President Hamid Karzai’s Western-backed government was a legitimate target.

“We never consider those people as civilians who are directly involved in our country’s occupation and work with sensitive organs of the enemy,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in an emailed statement.

WOMEN, CHILDREN IN FIRING LINE

The rise in deaths of women and children maintained a trend marked last year.

In one of the worst instances, 10 children, most of them infants, were killed in an aerial bombardment in the eastern province of Kunar that “appeared to serve no clear military/tactical purpose”, the United Nations said.

An investigation by the NATO-led force in Afghanistan concluded it was not responsible for the deaths, though human rights groups and the U.N. have questioned that finding.

The threat to civilians has become a significant source of stress in relations between Karzai and his backers, particularly when civilian deaths are caused by foreign forces.

But questions have been raised about the ability of domestic forces not only to take on the insurgents but to win the trust and support of people in areas where insurgents operate.

Casualties caused by a security force known as the Afghan Local Police, set up in 2010 to operate in remote, insecure areas, rose more than 60 percent, the United Nations said. Force members had been accused of murder, torture and rape.

Many communities, however, reported that they owed an improvement in security to the police.

But the report also noted increased numbers of clashes between unaligned armed groups, a recurrence of the insecurity in the 1990s that enabled the Taliban to take control.

The report also revealed that the U.S. army had launched a fresh inquiry into allegations of war crimes committed between November and February in the strategically important province of Wardak.

That investigation comes on the heels of the arrest of an Afghan translator who worked with U.S. special forces who he said had killed civilians he helped capture. The bodies of as many as 10 civilians were found this year near the military base used by the special forces soldiers. (Editing by Robert Birsel and Ron Popeski)

NODE modular sensor gets color scanning capability

Image

What’s a modular sensor without modules? The folks behind Node have released the iPhone peripheral’s fifth end cap, the NODE+chroma, a sensor that scans colors, transmitting that data to your handset via Bluetooth 4.0. The $99 add-on features white LED light, capturing a reading in around a second, regardless of the influence of ambient light. You can pick up the new module over at Node’s site, along with climate, gas, thermometer sensors and an LED flashlight. And while you’re at it, you should probably pick up the $149 Node as well, or those sensors won’t be of much use.

Debi Mazar Talks Madonna, Answers Rapid-Fire Questions On ‘Watch What Happens: Live’ (VIDEO)

Actress Debi Mazar dropped by the clubhouse on “Watch What Happens: Live” and Andy Cohen couldn’t wait to ask her a few questions about her BFF, Madonna. The two have been friends since before either one of them had any sort of fame.

Cohen did limit himself to 45 seconds, but anyone who knows how fast he talks knows that he can still pump a lot of questions at her in that span of time. Through his grilling of Mazar he learned that Madge smells like gardenias, loves salted fish and is a feisty Leo. Mazar also said that “Sean” was Madonna’s true love — but when asked to clarify if she was referring to Sean Penn, she said only, “Maybe.”

“Did Madonna ever steal any of your boyfriends?” Cohen asked her. Mazar said yes, but then backed up. She said that Madonna had tried to steal her boyfriend, but it didn’t happen. She also revealed a strange Madonna-Bravo connection. Apparently, Madonna used to get “spiritual baths” and “blessings” from self-professed witch, Mama Elsa of “The Real Housewives of Miami.”

Phone to Chromecast app streams pics and video, but can’t be released yet

Phone to Chromecast app demo streams pictures and video, but can't be released yet

Google’s $35 Chromecast fared well in our review, but something that could make it even more useful is the ability to stream pictures and video from mobile devices. Users have been able to work around that on PCs by entering info for locally stored files into the Chrome address bar, and now ClockworkMod developer Koushik Dutta is showing off a solution for mobile that closes the gap with AirPlay. Demonstrated in the video after the break, his Phone to Chromecast app can fling pictures or videos stored on the phone directly to the dongle — apparently thanks to web server software he’d already created for Android. There’s no specific word on the codecs or resolutions tested, but he reports videos work at full framerate “like magic.” The only bad news? The preview SDK terms mean he can’t distribute the APK without written permission from Google, so this demo is as close as we’re getting for now.

Pinterest For iOS Gets Animated Pinning Shortcuts

Pinterest For iOS Gets Animated Pinning ShortcutsAn app should never, ever, remain just where it is – being stagnant is a surefire recipe for disaster in this fast paced world. Well, in March this year, we did mention that Pinterest would be introducing a new look for all its users (where it did bring back some old features along the way), and a couple of months later, Pinterest did roll out an app update for Android as well as iOS platforms. Just last month, Pinterest now allowed users to search through their own pins for a higher degree of usefulness.

The latest iOS version of Pinterest now has the advantage of an animated shortcut which would come in handy if you want to repin, like or send pins to your mates whenever you press on an entry. Some will say that this is rather similar in function to Tumblr’s sharing tools, but it must be noted that the menu itself will boast of fancier graphics which will definitely fall in line with the social networks’ overall aesthetic. Apart from that, Pinterest has also thrown in an Edit Home Feed button that makes it easier to housekeep your pins on the iPhone, in addition to sending pins to your friends from the iPad.
