Sugar smartphone packs 5.16 carats in Swarovski gems, worthy specs (video)

Sugar phone hands-on

Many ostensibly female-oriented phones tend to be compromised, with flashiness on the outside sadly unmatched by power on the inside. Not so Sugar’s inaugural, namesake smartphone: while the Android 4.2-based device is lined with 5.16 carats’ worth of Swarovski Pure Brilliance gems, the underlying hardware is worth attention all on its own. The 5-inch, 1080p Sharp LCD is backed up by a quad-core MediaTek chip, 2GB of RAM, an 8MP rear camera, a 1.3MP front shooter and either 16GB or 32GB of storage. Sugar plans to launch the phone in China and Europe, although you’ll have to wait until August for full details. In the meantime, you can catch the full Engadget Chinese hands-on at the link below, and our colleagues’ English hands-on video is available after the break.

Lytro’s selective focus camera finally coming to the UK starting at £399

Lytro's selective focus camera finally available in the UK

Assuming you haven’t given up on the idea, you’ll soon be able to buy a Lytro light field camera in the UK — even though it’s been on US shelves since early last year. To remind you, it works by combining a fixed f/2.0, 8x optical zoom lens with an 11-“megaray” sensor to create a layered 1,080 x 1,080 “living picture,” in which the focus can be changed later by viewers. For those who waited all this time, there is a consolation: Lytro recently enabled the camera’s WiFi chip, allowing you to see images on any iOS device via a companion app. The 8GB model in graphite, electric blue, seaglass or moxie pink will run £399, while a 16GB offering in “red hot” will be priced at £469. You can grab one after July 22nd at Dixons Travel, Harrods or John Lewis — to see how it works, check a sample image after the break.

Bruce Willis Has A Clip Of His Upcoming Appearance On ‘Under the Dome’ (VIDEO)

According to Bruce Willis, he’s finally returning to the medium that made him famous. The movie star got his start on “Moonlighting” before transitioning into a bona fide movie star with the “Die Hard” series of films. He dropped by “Late Show with David Letterman” to talk about his return to the small screen as a guest star on the CBS summer hit “Under the Dome.”

He even brought a clip of his appearance. But, unlike most of the characters, Willis isn’t under the dome. The narrator explains: “Special appearance by Bruce Willis as the guy who lives right next door to the dome.”

“I’m not in the dome! This is the line, right here, by my house! …My watermelons!” Willis exclaims in the clip. Okay, it was just a joke, but it was a pretty funny one. His poor watermelons sliced in half like that cow!
