STAND Urinal: Don’t Pee in the Sink

Many people practice clean bathroom habits, but just as many are pretty nasty. Enter Kaspars Jursons’s redesign of the toilet, where he puts a sink on top of the urinal. Relieve yourself and immediately clean up. It puts the cleaning part right in your face. If you still don’t wash your hands after using this you have real problems.

The toilet is called STAND. It’s a great idea, but it would never work. People would be peeing in those sinks just for fun – and how clean can you really get with people’s aim being so bad, since it is so close to the urinal.

It’s just a concept, but not a terrible one. It just depends on people being respectable and not taking a whiz in the wrong section.

Eating In Concrete Tubes Is Not As Dystopian As It Sounds

Eating In Concrete Tubes Is Not As Dystopian As It Sounds

Pretty much anyone who walks into a bar or diner in a group is scanning for a booth. It’s just nicer to eat five plates of cheese fries in your own space. And the architects at Australian firm Techne clearly agree because they used concrete pipes to create seating spaces in the redesigned bar at Melbourne’s Prahran Hotel. Finally some privacy.

LEGO Sharknado: Enough Said!

LEGO master Iain Heath rides the gigantic Internet wave carved by SyFy’s too bad to be fake Z-movie. Really though, concepts like that should only come from a child’s doodles and never go beyond this level. A LEGO toy. Perhaps a web comic. Maybe an animated short. It could work as an online series. Oooor…

Yeaaaah no. This is enough for me.

Inhabitat’s Week in Green: human-powered helicopter, a 3D-printed SLR and smog-eating pavement

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green.

DNP Inhabitat's Week in Green TKTKTK

This week aviation fans witnessed a world’s first as AeroVelo’s human-powered helicopter won the elusive $250,000 Sikorsky Prize by hovering 10 feet off the ground for more than 60 seconds. The Solar Impulse sun-powered airplane also broke boundaries by completing the first sun-powered trip from coast to coast — and Inhabitat was on the scene at New York’s JFK Airport to meet it. In other green transportation news, ABB recently announced plans to build the world’s largest nationwide network of EV fast-charging stations in the Netherlands. NASA’s autonomous solar-powered polar rover, the GROVER, completed initial sub-zero field tests in Greenland, proving that it can withstand 30 MPH winds and temperatures of -22 F. Roads are an integral part of our carbon-heavy automotive transportation system — but a new type of smog-eating pavement could actually combat emissions and clean the air. And Inhabitat took a look at the world’s most beautiful urban street, a gorgeous tree-lined oasis in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Dual-SIM HTC Butterfly S certified for China, comes with removable back cover

HTC Butterfly S Dual 9060 certified for China

It’s a given that HTC will eventually launch its new Butterfly S in China, but will it be a dual-SIM version like the One Dual variants offered over there? The answer is yes, according to a filing in TENAA’s database. This particular “9060” device comes with WCDMA radio, meaning it’ll be picked up by China Unicom but will also work in many parts of the world.

According to a source of ours, the entire back cover (black or white; with NFC antenna) is removable to give access to the two micro-SIM card slots, as well as a microSD slot as featured on the One Dual. The trade-off, however, is the increased 10.89mm thickness from the original 10.6mm. That said, the listed 158g weight is a little below the original 160g, so we’re not sure if the battery capacity is still at 3,200mAh.

The rest of the phone should otherwise be identical to its single-SIM sibling: 1.9GHz quad-core processor (so should be the same Snapdragon 600 SoC), 5-inch 1080p LCD, UltraPixel main camera, BoomSound stereo speakers and Android 4.2.2. As always, we shall keep an eye out for a price and date.

Even Before Digital Cameras People Took A Crap Ton Of Photos

From New Year’s Eve 2012 to New Year’s Day 2013, Facebook users uploaded 1.1 billion photos. Which is something absurd like two photos per active user. But don’t think that people haven’t always been people. Even before smartphones and digital cameras, consumers were out there taking a lot of stupid photos just for fun. And given how relatively resource intensive it was for people to own cameras, buy film, and develop photos it’s pretty amazing to see how many prints came out of "the old days." Enter The Photo Man.
