Penn State’s Board Authorizes Sandusky Settlements

UNIONTOWN, Pa. — Penn State could soon be paying out millions of dollars to victims of former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky after disclosing Friday it had tentative agreements with some of the young men who say he sexually abused them.

The school does not plan to comment on specifics until the deals are made final, which could happen in the coming weeks. University president Rodney Erickson called getting approval for settlement offers “another important step toward the resolution of claims from Sandusky’s victims.”

What It Really Means To Woo White Voters

I have a visceral reaction to conservatives arguing that Republicans should forget about trying to lure Latinos by passing immigration reform, and focus on turning out white voters instead.

A Raw Chicken Hand Towel Is So Gross and So Clever

A Raw Chicken Hand Towel Is So Gross and So Clever

The scariest thing in your kitchen—besides maybe the biggest, sharpest knives—is chicken juice; ain’t nobody want salmonella. And what better way to have fun with that fear than by having a hand towel that looks eerily similar to a slimey, raw chicken carcass? "Yeah, just rub this on your hands and everything will be fine."

Ben Heck Builds His Own Steam Box: Let’s Ask Him to Make Half-Life 3

Last time we checked in with Ben Heck he made his own portable gaming device based on a Raspberry Pi. Recently he talked about another custom gaming project on his blog. Ben pried away the Steam Box concept from the abyss of Valve Time and decided to make his own. Now he’s ready for the Steam Summer Sale.

Ben made his PC in console’s clothing last winter as part of a series of projects commissioned by AMD. His rig is based on AMD’s A10 5800K APU, which combines a 3.8GHz quad-core CPU with an AMD Radeon HD 7660D GPU. He also added 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. Now before you say News Flash: Man Assembles PC! in the comments, let me tell you that Ben also made the case from scratch. He laser-cut the front plates out of acrylic and brushed aluminum plastic. The curved sides are made of interlocking acrylic ribbings screwed together, while the base is made of aluminum. Finally he used parts from an Xbox 360 console to make the AMD logo and controller sync indicator light up.

Ben says that this is one of the rare times that he wanted to keep something he was commissioned to make. So now he’s on the run from AMD. Just kidding. Ben’s going to make another one for the company.

Google tackles Rubik’s Cube with museum partnership

One part of the Beyond Rubik's Cube exhibit is a 12-foot walk-in structure that reveals the inner workings of a Rubik's Cube.

Google has acquired a taste for the museum business, it appears.

It’s brought high-resolution reproductions of many works of art online, added museums to Google Maps’ Street View, and built an interactive animation Web site called This Exquisite Forest for the Tate Modern in London.

Now it’s getting a bit deeper, becoming the “lead creative partner” in a traveling exhibit called “Beyond Rubik’s Cube” with the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, N.J.

Word of the project trickled out on Google+ on Rubik’s birthday on Saturday. Rubik himself joined Google+ on Thursday.

The large Groovik's Cube can be operated by people at the exhibit or online.

Moto X using Verizon’s network surfaces in leaked photo

Moto X using Verizon's network surfaces in leaked photo

What’s said to be the Moto X has been breaking cover left and right, and now it’s made yet another appearance. Android Central has scored a new photo of the device in question, and while it looks nearly identical to an earlier snapshot, a keen eye will notice a Verizon 4G logo sitting in the status bar. The outlet also notes that the soft navigation keys are slightly translucent like those in the previous leak, which may point to an unreleased version of Android. Paired with an internal document from Big Red that pegs the hardware for an August 23rd arrival, it looks like the Moto X is a sure bet on the carrier.

Update: It bears mentioning that an unknown Moto phone we saw way back in March may be the same model. Head past the break to check out the video.

What Would We Do If Aliens Just Showed Up Tomorrow?

It seems unlikely—impossible, even—that aliens would just happen to make contact today. Or tomorrow. Or the day after. But what if they did? How do you even deal with something like that?

Swivl turns you into a master iPhone filmmaker

The iPhone’s camera throughout the smartphone’s several generations has long been quite the high end model among its rivals, but it is encouraging to see that both Windows Phone 8 and Android camps have finally caught up – and even surpassed the iPhone’s photo taking capabilities, leveling the playing field somewhat in this aspect. Having said that, you cannot deny the fact that there are plenty of iPhone users out there who are also fans of the device, and some folks even figured out that their iPhone cameras are good enough for capturing beautiful moments. Why not bring your homegrown filmmaking talent to the next level with the £179.99 Swivl? The Swivl basically turns you into a one-man film crew.

It will allow you to capture all those precious memories for posterity in a professional looking manner, regardless of whether you are shooting some action sports, a family member making a presentation, or even the neighborhood blockbuster film, the Swivl will still get the job done as it automatically follows your every move. It is fully automated and makes use of motion-sensitive tracking technology, delivering full 360º horizontal-rotation and +10º/-20º vertical movement. It works its magic by tracking the ‘Marker’, which so happens to be a small lightweight sensor which you clip onto clothing or hold in your hand, letting the Swivl base unit to home in on your exact position. This means whenever you move, Swivl will move with you (or your subject, depending on where the Marker is clipped). The Swivl Marker also has another function – to be a iOS Digital Microphone so that your productions are always filled with crystal clear audio.
