Looks like yet another Dreamliner is on fire—this time, it’s on the tarmac at London Heathrow Airport. (Luckily, it appears the jet is empty.) You’ll remember that the Boeing 787 was initially grounded back in January after one of the aircraft caught fire on the ground at Boston Logan Airport. Programmers and fanboys fixated on the thorny problem of Android fragmentation had reason to pay attention to Google’s statistics that this week showed the latest version of Android, Jelly Bean, surpassing the two-and-a-half-year-old Gingerbread as the most-used version of Android.
It’s a notable achievement for Google, which has been trying to push the Android world toward the modernized features and interfaces of Android 4.x for years. It introduced Android 4.0, aka Ice Cream Sandwich, in late 2011, then refined it with 4.1 and 4.2, aka Jelly Bean, starting in May 2012.
The operating system variety is one facet of the fragmentation problem. With so many versions of Android in circulation, programmers must make sure their software works with each of them. Programming interfaces change with operating system updates.

Well over two years after the original graced Boost Mobile’s shelves, Samsung’s Galaxy Prevail II is being announced for the same carrier. Available for just $179.99 in off-contract form, the handset ships with Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean), a 4-inch WVGA touchscreen, 5-megapixel rear camera, 1.3 megapixel front-facing cam, and a 1.4GHz processor. You’ll also find a 1,750mAh battery, inbuilt GPS / WiFi modules and Bluetooth 4.0. The prepaid carrier is hawking this on its contract-free $55 / month plan, which just so happens to shrink by $5 per month for every six on-time payments — in other words, those who hang around long enough will eventually be paying as little as $40 / month for nationwide talk, text and picture messaging, as well as web access. These are all, no doubt, noble endeavors. But I’ve often said—and I stand by this—that if I had a time machine, I’d go visit the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago.

We have a winner!
CNET’s From Old School to Tech Cool Contest asked our Facebook fans to share photos of old tech, with the ten most popular qualifying for a chance to win the Panasonic TC-PST60. This plasma TV is a 2013 Editors’ Choice and the only TV to ever receive a 5-star rating from CNET.
Congratulations to Garret W, whose photo of an old-school portable computer won the contest. TV reviewer David Katzmaier selected the winner from among the top ten vote-getting entries.
