BurgerBusiness: McDonald’s Offers One-Day-Only LTOs in Japan

In Japan, McDonald’s is taking both the “limited-time offer” and “premium price” concepts to new extremes. The chain’s “Quarter Pounder Jewelry” promotion is three gem-stone-themed Quarter Pounder burgers, each of which is available for one day only. And the price for each burger is a McDonald’s record ¥1,000, or nearly $10.

Facebook rolling out Graph Search to US users this week

Remember that profile-specific social network search tool Mark Zuckerberg announced back in January? It’s finally ready for the general public. According to the New York Times and ABC News, Facebook Graph Search will start rolling out to US users this Monday. The update is more than a simple search bar revamp, however — it allows users to mine their social circle for very specific information, asking questions like “Who are my friends in San Francisco,” or searching for “people who went to Stanford who like the 49ers.” The tool is designed to harken back to the company’s original goal of connecting people, and aims to help users draw lines between their friends and interests. Graph Search will also pull select data from Bing, allowing users to peek at the weather from the comfort of their timeline.

Despite launching on a wider scale, the service isn’t perfect — the New York Times reports that it still has trouble juggling synonymous phrases (something we experienced in our own hands-on), returning discrepant results for searches like “people who like to surf” and “people who like surfing.” The tool also works within the confines of a user’s privacy settings and public activity, meaning that you won’t accidentally uncover your cousin’s secret My Little Pony fan-group if its privacy settings are locked down. The feature is set to debut for a few hundred million users this week, and will continue to become available to the all US users in the coming weeks.

Robert Kuttner: Hero or Villain?

So is Edward Snowden a hero or a creepy betrayer? The fact that he is huddled in a Moscow airport waiting for some country to take him in lends credence to the betrayer view. Since September 11, 2001, a lot of queasy liberals have cut the U.S. government a fair amount of slack when it comes to surveillance of potential terrorist plots. The attacks happened, after all. And more plots followed. Al-Qaeda is no paranoid fantasy. We can’t have people with top-secret information making national policy, as free-lances. But as one detail after another has emerged in the wake of Snowden’s initial disclosures, the weight of evidence keeps shifting to the hero side of the scale. Put aside for the moment Snowden’s motives, or character defects, or awkward international flight from Hong Kong to Russia. History is likely to record him as something of a hero for the long overdue national debate that he has forced. Since Snowden, a largely intimidated press has begun doing its job, and the revelations are not pretty.

Jason Kidd Gets 1st Technical As NBA Coach, Begins On-The-Job Training At Summer League (VIDEO)

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — There was a relaxed intensity about Jason Kidd at the Orlando Summer League, applauding the effort by players, talking with assistants and yelling instructions from the bench.

Then he received his first technical as an NBA coach.

Brooklyn’s new coach got off the bench Sunday, walked across half court to challenge a foul call and was teed up with 2:23 left in the Nets’ 76-67 loss to the Detroit Pistons.
