A 2004 Hyundai Elantra is worth about $5,000 cash today, according to Cars.com. Philip Romano’s model is probably worth a bit less than that, since it’s coated headlight to fender in gritty black chalkboard paint.
Shape-It-Up Lets You Tweak 3D Shapes Using Simple Hand Gestures: Pottery Simulator
Posted in: Today's ChiliThe researchers behind Shape-It-Up call it a “Hand Gesture Based Creative Expression of 3D Shapes Using Intelligent Generalized Cylinders”, but it’s totally a pottery simulator. Decades from now, if – when? – Paramount Pictures decides to remake Ghost, the characters will be using Shape-It-Up while a dubstep remix of Unchained Melody plays in the background. Oh, my WUB WUB WUB WUUUUUB…
Shape-It-Up is a project by Purdue University Engineering students Vinayak, Sundar Murugappan, HaiRong Liu and Karthik Ramanilets. It lets users manipulate a virtual cylinder by using simple hand gestures, which are tracked using a Kinect. Skip to around 1:28 in the video below to see it in action.
I guess you could say that was… righteous. YEEEEA- I’m old. The researchers think of Shape-It-Up as a way for designers to start their sketches in an easier and more intuitive manner, not as a way to create a polished model. But if you pair it with a 3D printer, I think it can also be used as a way to teach kids about the basics of CAD and 3D printing. Now get off my lawn and head to Purdue University’s website for the project’s abstract.

The Firebuggz Fire Fishing Pole puts an end to charred sticks and burned hot dogs.

Summer means roasting marshmallows over a campfire and all the failures that entails. How many times have you burned those puffy cylinders of sugar and ruined potential s’mores?
A good marshmallow roaster always blames his tools, so forget that stick. Campfire enthusiasts Bob and Tara Hurt of Becker, Minnesota, have a better idea: a stainless steel rod with a swiveling roaster attachment for perfectly toasted ‘mallows.
The Firebuggz Fire Fishing Pole has a heat-resistant birch handle and four stainless steel hooks to roast marshmallows and hot dogs. With a flick of the wrist, the hooks flip over for even roasting.
The pole also has a safety mechanism so the hooks won’t swing around and hit someone, or send hot dogs flying into your campfire pals.

‘Imagine A Future’ Documentary Screened For 200 New Orleans Girls During Essence Festival
Posted in: Today's ChiliOver 200 girls from New Orleans gathered in the city’s historic Joy movie theater on Friday to see My Black Is Beautiful’s (MBIB) documentary “Imagine A Future.” The viewing was one of the many community-focused events taking place during the four-day 2013 Essence Festival.
The film, which is co-directed by Shola Lynch and Lisa Cortes, follows Janet Goldsboro, a teenager from Delaware who is struggling with self-acceptance and takes a journey to South Africa to find herself. Goldsboro’s issues primarily stem from the color of her skin — she feels that her dark complexion makes her unattractive and worthless.
Sadly, Goldsboro isn’t alone, which is why MBIB teamed up with Walmart, Black Girls Rock! and Girl Up Nola, a girl-empowerment initiative started by New Orleans first lady Cheryl Landrieu, to gather the large group of girls to see the documentary.
We’re blessed with such an abundance of sports these days that any random night could be magic. Some college baseball game in the middle of the season might turn into an epic you’ll always remember. Some NHL playoff series makes it to Game 7, and then to overtime, and the suspense presses down on you like a Hitchcock movie.
